Idk why I’m watching this or why this is recommended to me but his reaction is so pure and sweet. I love you and that moth is beautiful ❤️

Wow, that is beautiful! Worth every minute of watching! And her abdomen is still quite large even after drying her wings. Interesting they don't weave a little opening in their cocoons like some other saturniids. I can't wait to watch my Hyalophora cecropia eclose next year. Their only 3 weeks old right now. Thank you so much sharing. Love your videos.

Female moths and butterflies often have larger abdomens because they have to carry eggs, and larger abdomens make for more room for the eggs.🙂

Bart, your channel has really made me love moths... I always thought of them as pesty and ugly, but you've really opened my eyes to the beauty and wonder if so many amazing species!!! I was lucky enough to find a female polyphemus moth recently. She was in a VERY high traffic area and unfortunately laid many of her eggs in the area, I realized she and her eggs wouldn't survive much longer if I didn't relocate them so I gently picked her up, and as carefully as I could got as many of the eggs off that sidewalk door entrance area and brought them all to a nearby tree, I placed mom and eggs on some leaves, but not before getting 3 incredible photos... She was magnificent... a truly stunning specimen... I hope I did the right thing... I know that those eggs would've certainly been trampled if I left them there so I just had to interfere...

If you help it it will die. It needs the struggle to make it strong enough to survive outside it's cocoon!!
@dewbow1342 жыл бұрын
Exactly! Some people, when they see them struggling, think that they need to help it, not realizing that it's a natural struggle and that every single moth or butterfly needs to go through that struggle. Even though it might seem hard, it's best not to try to help. I remember someone opened up a butterfly chrysalis before the butterfly was ready to emerge thinking that they were helping it, when in reality they were actually extremely damaging the chrysalis and where hurting it. sad that some people don't realize that it's a natural struggle that they have to go through and try to interfere with nature😞

Hi I'm in NZ. Found one of these cocoons someone had left on a bench in a house I've just moved into. Last night it started making tapping and scratching sounds but has currently stopped. I've put it in a safe container and am awaiting it's emergence.

Beautiful! Bart... I need your help desperately! I have several Tobacco/ Sphinx moth pupae that I have raised since I rescued them as horn worms (a.k.a bearded dragon food.) My first batch of 4 from last year hatched with no problems & lived in my apartment for quite some time. That began the obsession to rescue every horn worm within a 10mile radius. At one point I had 30+ caterpillars (xs, s, m, l, xl) and lost a lot of the really really small ones (unfortunately). My problem is I cannot tell when the moth is ready to emerge now. They seem pretty wet and are moving around quite a bit & the lower part of the cocoon is hollow, but they are sticking to the sides of the cocoon & their wings and everything else are getting messed up. Are they stuck? Are they too dry or drowning? Are they not ready yet to emerge? I'm beside myself because trying to assist in their emergence has only failed. I can send you pictures. Please respond back as soon as you are able. Thank you

They emerge on their own so they will be ready to hatch when they do u have to let it hang vertical and or horizontal i like to do they moth do they choosing u dont need to spray the pupa just keep it humid and warm i raise them too, i got a humming bird feeder for the adults

I'd be tired if I was struggling for 9 minutes as well lol. Also crazy how it keeps itself on the wall with those 6 small legs despite its abdomen being giant

I remember having one of these cacoons in my bug catchers when i was younger and it took almost a year for it to hatch. But when it did hatch there were wild ones sitting on top of the bug catcher.

this is not the birth of the moth. The moth was born when it emerged from the egg as a caterpillar. This is it's transformation from caterpillar to a moth.
