fun fact: those aren't actually atlas moths. atlas moths have less wavey wing patterns, usually have lighter colorations, and the tips of the upper wings have markings that look like the sides of snake's heads. the wing patterns on these are a lot more sporadic and random than attacus atlas, and the "snake head" markings look wildly different. these are actually the much rarer "Archaeoattacus edwardsii", or edward's atlas moths. while they're not that difference in appearance, they're actually a completely different and MUCH rarer genus and there's very little information about them online. really cool to see one in the wild!
@richardpoxon3 жыл бұрын
hi, yes you are quite correct, edwardsii is the more common species here. I usually see 2 or 3 during an evening. Attatcus usually arrives on 1 in 3 nights and they are often somewhat tatty. Edwardsii is my personal favorite with its deeper and more purple tones and of course 2 eyes! Quite breathtaking!

Let me tell you a few moths that actually look like butterflies. green banded urania. The green banded urania is a beautiful tropical moth. So brightly colored, it resembles a butterfly. Although many believe it's a butterfly, this insect is truly a moth, a brightly colored day flying moth. Rosy Maple moth. The Rosy Maple moth is it cute, fuzzy, pink and yellow moth. It is very small and does not have a mouth. Sadly these fuzzy Beauties do not live long. They, just like most moths, are attracted to light and fly at night, but if you're lucky enough to see one resting during the day, they are really cute. They move when they're disturbed. Luna Moth. This moth is lime green, big moth that looks like some sort of swallowtail butterfly. It is very beautiful and flies during the night, but seeing one during the day resting is a rare thing to see. Madagascan Sunset moth. This moth is very beautiful and related to the green banded urania moth. It resembles a butterfly and sadly is very rare and endangered because people kill themself to make jewelry out of them because they are so beautiful. If you simply Google brightly-coloured day flying moths there are a lot of other brightly colored species just waiting to be seen!

@@neonx6568 nothing's wrong with them. They actually can't see that well And when they see a light, they confuse it with the Moon. They use the moon for navigation and when they think the light is the Moon, they fly straight towards it. Since butterflies do not navigate using the Moon, that's the reason why it's extremely rare for a butterfly to end up trapped in your house.

Hi There, apologies for the late reply, i've been away. I have tried to use my trap in crete and kefalonia during August without much luck. Your best bet would be to try hign ground above 1000ft perhaps during late springtime. The lamps are safe as long as you dont stare at the bulb for long periods.
