Thank you for finally getting back to the Smiths again! For lyrical context: The UK music press really loved taking everything lead singer Morrissey said out of context, then they'd create some sort of scandal on it. He wrote this song as a very tongue-in-cheek middle finger to the music press. Johnny Marr is an incredible guitarist, very much of the Pete Townshend school of being a Rythm/Lead. Bassist Andy Rourke is the Smiths secret weapon. Hopefully you won't wait another year to hit the Smiths again!

In the 80's these guys were not on my radar. Same with The Cure, Depeche Mode and Love and Rockets. However, The Smiths began to slowly move up in my awareness and all these years later, at the age of 64, I absolutely love The Smiths head and shoulders above the other three bands mentioned. I even drove to Vegas to see Morrissey one time (OK, it was my wife's idea, but I did drive). I think the lyrics are so much of what divides people. You kind of have to "get" Morrissey. I now think he is both hilarious and heart-breaking at the same time.

Same here in regard to the groups you mention not being on my radar in the 80s. My music taste has grown somewhat but music discovery was so much different back then. @oscillatewildly65532 жыл бұрын
@@neekerbreeker up until 1991 I was only exposed to the music played on the radio (mainstream station) then someone at high school passed me a mixed tape and I heard Bigmouth Strikes Again ... My mind was blown! I'd, obviously, never heard anything like it, then I went to all the record stores and "record fairs" as they were known, like a market place and this one dude always had loads of Smiths records and Smiths 7" and 12" singles and to date, along with Morrissey records and singles I have just over 300 vinyl records ... Special editions etc and even now in my late 40's I (binge) listen to The Smiths and Morrissey and still feel all of the same emotions, it still works as therapy. I have a "picture disc" interview which isn't a CD but that's what they were called, it's an interview with Morrissey and Johnny Marr on vinyl and on the vinyl is a picture of Morrissey waiving his gladioli (flowers) now, of course, you only need to go to KZbin to hear interviews and see live footage. I remember when the only way to hear the song Wonderful Woman was to own the 12" single of This Charming Man as it was the "B side" ... The signature characteristic of the Smiths is the ironic, morbid lyrics. Lyrics that are usually depressing or sad. The best lyrics in the 80’s. When the vocalist Morrissey wrote many of the songs, they started out as poems. He was a high school student alone in his room. When he later met Johnny Marr and formed a band, Johnny put Morrissey’s old poems to music. This is how many of the Smiths songs came about.

Thanks for making another trip to the Smiths well of music. Back in the mid 80s, one way to distinguish my friends was by whether they were in the “I love the Smiths” camp or the “I just can’t listen to Morrissey” camp. Pretty much a polarizing group in that regard. Regardless of which camp one was in, appreciation for Johnny Marr’s guitar style, his arrangements, and how he could actually shred in a unique and enjoyable way, was universal. There’s a reason why, even today, guitarists will refer to him as, “Johnny F_ckin’ Marr!” Thanks for give the Smiths a second listen.

There's a song from The Queen Is Dead album that I've always looked at as a coda to How Soon Is Now called There Is a Light That Never Goes Out. This song nearly caused me to wreck my car. I had grown up Bi in the 70's-80's South and had to deal with all of the emotional baggage that came with. Throw in a Born Again Baptist Mom and an Air Force senior NCO Dad and yeah, there was some angst over what would happen to my family life if I ever came out or was outted. I was on my way home from school when I first heard this song on the radio in '86 and once the lyrics hit me, my hands started shaking so badly I had to pull over and sit there shaking, breathing deeply and trying not to bawl my eyes out. To say it hit a little close to home is epic understatement. Back to the music...where How Soon Is Now is asking "Do I have a right to exist. Am I worthy to consider myself human?" There Is A Light asks "Will I ever find love and when I find it, will I be able to claim it and have the courage to acknowledge it openly?" Some heady, existential stuff for someone still forced into hiding who they are to deal with. I wasn't a huge fan of the whole Goth/Emo Rock phase but the Smiths were stand-outs. Solid music, production and lyrics made them my favorites from the genre.

Not a criticism: Observation. This band dominated college radio in the 80's. Which, back then, I just did not get. Much in the same way the two of you do not. That all changed with the release of "Girlfriend In A Coma". After which I went back an gave another listen to their past catalog. Brilliant. High confidence it will click and you'll understand what I mean. Tho it won't take you as long as it did for me. Love and appreciate your channel!

Should've done the title track. That being said, "The Queen is Dead", their swan song, is their best album.

The Smiths are one of those bands you need to do a deep dive into lyrics. Next from the Smiths should be this Charming Man. Many guitarists claim this is one of the challenging riffs to play!

The Smiths made amazing music, but Morrissey was their blessing and their curse. Sometimes a poet, sometimes a wanker, often both, rarely a strong singer but always the center of attention. I forget the exact quote, but the entire Smiths experience is summed up by Johnny Marr (guitar) saying (paraphrased) "I once wrote this amazing, wandering, sublime piece of music and the next thing I knew it was called 'Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others.'"

Guitar chords at beginning reminded me of America. Then at 3:50 U2.

Inverse Morrissey Happiness Index - when I listen to The Smiths, the more depressed Morrissey is, the happier it makes me!

The musicianship in this band is 10/10. Take the dive down this rabbit hole with This Charming Man, What Difference does it Make, Vicar in a Tutu, Ask, and a Rush and a Push.
