Triangle: Fuzzy high end, a bit reminiscent of a Fuzz Face. Great for sustained 60's-esque solos. Ram's Head: Bold, loud, and articulate. Great for singing lead lines and complex chord work. Green Russian: Huge low end and lots of mids. Great for heavy riffing. Op-Amp: Raspy, chainsaw texture with Tone Bypass switch for added versatility. Great for overall aggressive guitar work.

I remember I went in the local shop and tried the Rams, the Russian and OpAmp. Ended up with the Op, but I was totally biased cuz Smashing Pumpkins. I'd say I am not a huge fuzz fan...would normally prefer something with some metal bite to it. That said, I use the Pumpkin Pi like 85% of the time I want something distorted. This was an amazing shoot out thanks for taking the time to do this.

Thank you for this style (also used by pedal bored everyone should sub to them as well!) and using a riff that showed both the low and high end at the same time so we could hear how much of the low end was still sustaining while the higher notes were being played and them how much definition the high notes had... actually really important for a rhythm player. 👏👏

I’m quite amazed at how great these sounded. I know they’re being captured directly into the DAW program, but even still. It may have been the fact I was using Fender amps in the beginning and they’re already kind of mid scooped, but I’ve owned a few of these reissues and they didn’t sound anywhere near these variants. I’ve went and modded all of them to my liking at the time. Now I’m playing an old 1978 Peavey Deuce VT tube amp and I might have to break the Muff train out and see how they sound. I will say that I’d love to see every Muff circuit or variant reissued in the classic big box enclosures. Even the OpAmp Muff, it could totally reside in an awesome classic Muff big box that had a great and thick orange border that had the classic Muff letter font. I think they were onto something there with such large enclosures. Bigger pedals obviously equal a better and bigger tone. Also, absolutely fantastic video. I really dig it. Though I will say that if I went out and bought myself a Muff like one of these especially after watching this vid, I’d be a little underwhelmed and disappointed because this recording was phenomenal and really made the Muff variants sound great.

Mike Matthews has said himself, that every component change was always done to make the muffs sound alike with a new replacement component when old components were hard or expensive to come by. So they might be a little different, especially in the sweep of the controls, but they can be made to sound alike quite a lot.

Exactly! The extremes are where they can sound very different. But if you dial them with a "classic" setting che can be very, very similar.

@@soundmapper I wouldn't say that based on the result of listening to a KZbin video. For example, I had to sell Green Russian because of the excessive amount of low frequencies in this pedal. Owned the green muff and still own the op one. The Russian is a dark wall of sound, which sounds menacing at your home, but disappears into mix at rehearsal room. Kept for long time the op amp which cuts brilliantly the mix. Now my go-to fuzz is the hoof by eqd. It's just the fuzz to rule em all. Never looked back since. PS : the best OP AMP setting (you missed unluckly) is TONE OFF and SUSTAIN AT AROUND 2 o'CLOCK

Great comparison, and thanks for the shoutout in the description 😀 Nice to see the Ram’s Head in the mix - maybe if they bring out a Civil War one I’ll redo mine with all six (or seven, if I include the Bass Muff again). The switcher is a great touch. For me it was a balance between appeasing people who go on about buffering/tone-suck from multiple pedals when I wasn’t able to really hear the difference, and the downside of having a big ol’ switcher using up valuable screen real estate. @@peetminer It sounds great, but it’s definitely noisy in my current signal chain. (There’s no noise if I use it as a stand alone.) Op amp for my money all day long, literally! The Rams head and Triangle weren't yet released when I was trying to decide between the op amp and Russian, but Op amp won. Rams head would be my second choice, but still and yet, op amp wins to me for reasons you said in the caption. Huge fan of the Russian. I’m usually playing fender guitars and fender amps and like a particularly sparkly bright clean tone. Having that extra darkness helps a lot, for my anyways!

I feel the same, I'm usually playing a fender jag thru a vox ac30 and, while I haven't personally tested out the Triangle or Ram's Head (and wasn't too thrilled with the Opamp sound) the Green Russian is a great counterbalance to the bright, chimey Vox/Jag tone. Plus, in terms of presence and saturation, it puts my once beloved standard full-sized NYC muff to shame. And the Green Russian running thru the rhythm circuit on the Jag...it's like a beast that will eat your children. And I mean that in the best way.

Yeah, if using a Fender or Vox, the Green Russian is a winner. The other 3 work well with a Marshall-y style amp. I have a couple of Laneys and a Bassbreaker15 , the Ram's Head kills through those. GR into my AC15 or Strauss SVT-15 (it's basically a Blues jnr with a 10" Eminence) is awesome.

My favorite guitar/Muff/amp combination atm is Epiphone SG (heavily modified, pups upgraded to Duncan P90 'Buckers) > Wren & Cuff Box of War V1 > Vox AC15 C1 stock w/Greenback. So good. I believe that the Box of War is based on a Sovtek "Civil War" Muff.

Overall, I think you did a fantastic job with the whole production of this video. I had a hard time deciding, but since I use Fender amps, the Op-Amp Muff is probably the best suited for me. I was a little surprised by that. I did have a Russian Muff reissue for a while and it did not sound terrible, but I usually had to stack it with a Ibanez TS-9 to make it not sound so muddy.

Which of the muff pedals would you recommend for someone looking for more note definition and clarity, but not losing any of the fuzz that makes these pedals cool? I have a nano big muff, and for some leads I do, it doesn’t do as good of a job as I’d like, however it does rhythm really well!

Black Arts Toneworks Pharaoh! It's a little more $ than any of the EHX Muffs, but for tight, fat, punchy Muff-style Fuzz with no "mud" and excellent note-separation, totally works for me. I'm always swapping out pedals but it's currently occupying a permanent position on my "Stoner Doom" board. It can also be set up to sound a lot like a Fuzzface as well. Bonus!

But yeah, I agree with WAAC on the Ram's Head. Out of the all the stock, non-deluxe EHX Muffs it (closely followed by the Triangle, depending on the amp/rig, etc) does have the midrange and clarity for the lead tone many of us are looking for.

I know I'm 9 months late on your comment, but I play a fender jag thru a vox ac30, and I've found (while i haven't tried the Triangle or Ram's Head) the Green Russian is a great counterbalance to the bright, chimey Vox tone. I'm sure as a Vox owner, you've noticed the bright sound can be a bit jarring with certain distortion/fuzz pedals. I tried the OpAmp version which sounded obnoxious to me, used (and still keep) the standard full-size NYC muff on my board, but the Green Russian seems to be right in that sweet spot with the Vox tone

You mean one that has a noise gate? The big muff deluxe has a built in noise gate you can modify and mids knobs as well as ability to add an expression pedal to control mids like a wah that sounds like wah and fuzz together it's really versatile compared to the original big muff where you couldn't adjust mids and got lost in mix due to it.

I agree, the reason why I don't have the Green but the Ram's Head on my board is that I use octave before the fuzz. The Green with octave before is too boomy. The Ram's Head is the most versatile in my opinion.
