Ram's Head has more gain, hence it's a little more noisy. It's crispier and louder actually, and it screams nice. Green Russian has more mids and it has little or no noise. It's warmer, great for almost all tones!
@mobydick389511 ай бұрын
Does a Gilmour board actually have to have two versions of the Muff? Just like having multiple compressors, it seems like having two wristwatches on is virtually the same thing, it merely provides a new opportunity for confusion and the audience won't know the difference anyway.
@efstathioszavvos48788 ай бұрын
@@mobydick3895 No, you don't need both of them. I've got a ram's head and it's fine. Depending on your other pedals the ram's head may be all you need. E.g. if you've got a boost with full EQ afterwards, like the wampler tumnus deluxe or even a Boss GE-7, you can get the ram's head to sound like the other muffs by fiddling with the compression ratio and attack/release of the compressor and the EQ. The Green one is the easiest to work with by far, but its shortcoming is that the attack is softer and therefore you can't make it sound bity like the ram's head no matter what you do. But for a budget board with a limited selection of other pedals I would go for the green one actually. You can pair it with a BD-2 or something and it sounds great without much effort. There's also the Deluxe Big Muff Pi which has a lot of controls and is super versatile.

As a fellow Gilmour aficionado, I gotta say, the Sovtek Big Muff Deluxe is the best Big Muff for Gilmour, because it has a controllable mid boost and a noise gate and a wicker. I'm surprised more Gilmour fans haven't latched onto them. Having said that, this video has almost convinced me to get a Rams Head.
@mustyguitar3 жыл бұрын
you may be right, i haven't tried it cause i don't like noise gate, it lacks dynamics in my opinion and lowers the feeling in my hands. and it's a big pedal, hard to find piece in the board. with that said, i'll try to use it, cause mid boost might actually be useful for PULSE tones for most people. and to be fair, Mr. Gilmour actually used sovtek on his 1994 tour.
@thebreakfastmenu3 жыл бұрын
@@mustyguitar Oh don’t worry, you don’t have to use the noise gate. If you want, you can forego any of the extra features and at the core is a good old Russian muff.

I have a Ram's Head, purchased without having tested other models, and I was thinking of replacing it with a Green Russian after listening to a few demos. Thanks to your comparison video, I realize that the difference isn't that big, it's quite similar and it will not fundamentally change my sound. I have to say that I'm not especially trying to sound like David Gilmour, the music I play is more grungy. So thank you very much for this video, I'll probably save some money by watching it.

I like the sound of the Rams head more and I prefer to get studio tones which you said it is better for. But I see in the comments you are also saying that it makes a lot of noise. It’s noisier of course, if I were to get one and only one, I’d get rams head because I think, and this is only my thought, I can have more harmonics and gain on single coils and emgs. That being said, you should play both in the store if you have the chance and decide for yourself

Intersting!!! How does one reduce the noise in Ram's head big muff?
@mustyguitar3 жыл бұрын
You can use noise suppressor pedal, but i don't recommend it, it reduces the sustain and the dynamics of the pedal in my opinion, and let's face it they're shit :) Noise is something that's there man, maybe you can use active pickups like EMG's. I've never had that much problem with noise, knowing that even Mr. Gilmour did everything and still had enormous noise when he wasn't picking the strings. I use EMG because i love the tone and mid boost, not because of the active noise cancelling. there are a lot of tutorials on how to shield your guitar on noise but those are mostly for lights and shit, not for the pedal noise itself. Bottom line, you need to get used to it and to tell you the truth, when you don't solo, just turn off the pedal, lower the volume, etc. you won't notice that much.
@metalore2 жыл бұрын
@@mustyguitar The Deluxe Big Muff and Sovtek Deluxe have a noise gate for exactly this purpose. But I'm not sure how authentic the Deluxe's simulation of Rams Head is, since it's not the same circuit. The Sovtek is supposed to have the same circuit as the Green Russian though.

@mustyguitar2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I was just like that, "I should have that too, I'll probably need it for X or Y" I'm selling almost 30-40 pedals I own just because I "could" use someday. You really don't need any more pedals Chris, that being said, if you're not happy with your legendary green russian, I can buy from you :) btw, ram's head has a lot more gain and A LOOOT more noise, you probably don't need that much gain or noise, if you need to scoop some of the mids that green russian offering, you can just use an eq for it, though, I wouldn't bother with it.
