That was a great run-through of the systems and features you're looking towards for your new build! Have been looking at changing out the gas hot water for a diesel unit, so as to be gas-free internally. However, a side benefit that I use heaps is the 240v electric heating circuit on the gas hot water. With solar filling the batteries well before midday, that excess power is now used for hot water heating (turning the inverter on). Haven't used gas for hot water since January (when I twigged on to this). So far I haven't come across any diesel hot water units that have 240v electric heating elements as well, so I haven't made the change yet.
@TheLifestylePioneers14 сағат бұрын
Thanks for the insight, we used to have a similar gas system for hot water with 240v as an option, we don't miss it as much as we thought we would. The diesel is so effictient.

Hi Liz I would recommend earthy colours down below, nothing too dark as it will show all the dust and not matte as that will show all the marks. Darker colour in the uppers will definitely close you in, especially at night when there’s no natural light coming in, so keep it to the lighter neutral shades and maybe in a matte for a modern look. Have fun with the colours and I can’t wait to see what you do 😊👍🏽🎨
@rolandhollingsworth45584 күн бұрын
We have ordered our next van with Gloss cupboards which has always worked. We have matt in our home kitchen, and after time it shows all the wear marks around the handles and you can't clean/remove them.
@Travelbug684 күн бұрын
@ I renovated my last home and put in a gloss white kitchen, I loved it and it opened up a smallish space beautifully. This home I purchased with a matte white kitchen and I love it too. It’s not as reflective but much easier on the eye and still gives the sense of space. In a small area with artificial lights on at night, a glossy ceiling, cupboards and walls can be a little bright to the senses after a while. It would be great if you could have a matte ceiling, that would fix the problem of the glare 😊👍🏽🤣 Materials are much better and a lot easier to clean now, I see a few influencers have done matte in their new builds for this reason. You must be incredibly excited to hit the road in your new van 😍 Happy travels 😊

hi 24 V solar is a good idea but use victron controllers for your solar. I have tried enerdrive and itech and ebay ones . victron gives the highest amps out if you keep your batteries at 12 V especially if you have two controllers as they don’t counteract each other with battery voltage. there is no need to use a 24 V inverter as the cables are normally right next to the battery and the cable runs would be short. I don’t know if you read my last message but putting a dishwasher under the fridge would give you a lot more room width and height depending on the fridge of course. I hope this information was useful. Have a nice day.
@TheLifestylePioneers14 сағат бұрын
Cheers, we're leaning towards using all Victron components this time around. We'll be fitting a pretty big inverter so a 24v one might be the better option to save some space and weight. The dishwasher won't fit under the fridge unfortunately, as the cabinets aren't big enough. Cheers.

Yes please, love to be in the draw for the Bluetti 😊. Internal colours - highly recommend the white gloss, it reflects light beautifully and in a small space makes it feel so much bigger! Something to consider with dark overheads - in the heat they do make the van feel hotter. Another enjoyable video 😊

I’m building an experimental 18’ composite van which is mostly done. Looks like a Zone RV but there’s a reason for that. Because I have no interest in caravanning (I’ve never been though) and I have 3 trades behind me there’s freedom to think differently during this build because I don’t have to filter everything through ‘the norm’. You guys were talking out power and I agree so I went with a 5kw EcoFlow, 3700w inverter and 2000w of solar on the roof. There are 3 fixed panels (1200w) and 2x400w remote controlled panels on an invented slide system. Pulls about 1.6kw per hour. I’m just about to do all the cabinets and I agree with you Liz so I’ll be making them all out of composite with a wooden Victorian Ash insert with a stainless steel strip. Saw it on a $10m yacht and it looked classy. There will be no door handles either on any of the cupboards because of another invention. Everything will be press to open with an electronic locking system behind the scenes. There’s a stack of other ideas on this thing so I get what you guys are thinking with your ‘what’s in what’s out’ attitude. I think there is so much copy/paste in the industry that everything just looks like the same.

Simon, I have an electric Ziggy in my toolbox slide-out. It works fine. We don’t have any gas, but we do carry one of those little $30 gas cartridge cookers you can buy anywhere just in case we get low on power. I was interested in the desalination device but opted to make my own creek water purification system. It’s easy to do and we find ourselves next to fresh water lots more than the ocean. Even so, we’ve only needed to use it once so far so it may not be worth it in the long term.

Great van. Agree with the east west and combo shower/toilet. We have both and prefer it. So much more space in the van and makes a small van, big. We also have the Tiny toilet. Changed our world. We have 20L external tank for it. You can bury it if you really want. Just need to use composting bags. Re aircon, I think you will be better off keeping it off the roof. For the reasons you said, plus they shade your panels. We get shading on ours from aircon and we get more power from the mobile panels because of the shading. Especially if you go 24v, any shading with knock out even more solar. Good luck. Cheers, Adam

The interior design content sounds really interesting as I'd love to see a good non-white-box cafe-style caravan realized. I'm sure you can do it! I think a "Dark Scandi" or even a "Dark Japandi" sorta vibe could work well in a caravan as it can do darker matte or muted color matte while maintaining openness and brightness. Food for Thought. I just subscribed to the newsletter and would love to be considered for that Bluetti unit. Cheers!

The achillies heel of a big power system is induction and it is best to always have a gas option to use when the cloudy days roll in even if it is a portable gas option. We have a reasonable solar battery setup and having a gas external gas option for cloudy days saves heaps of power. When cloudy days come and you want to camp for a week or two another option is handy. I know you are not generator people but they give you the ultimate freedom when off grid and you are never bothered by cloudy days. In your next van lift the bed higher to give you more outside boot space underneath. Check out Zone's latest van ( The summit ) they have done away with a front tool box and have done storage differently and they have now added colour to their vans which are a light touch which Liz might like.

Guys, we have a combo toilet & shower. It saves space, it is at the rear of our caravan as is the entry. Walking in from the outside we have on the RHS a large pantry then the fridge then the combo toilet ensuite. To ensure both the toilet & the toilet paper don’t get wet we have installed a small curtain rod on the ceiling & when showering it’s drawn across to keep the water from the toilet & paper. I don’t know how to send a photo to show you guys but if the designers or yourselves & the bathroom design lends itself to the above it surely will negate the need to store the paper elsewhere. We also have 2 water outlets in the fibreglass floor that runs the majority of water out into the grey water tank, minimal left on the floor. Finally, how long does one use the facility, our comment not long to warrant a separate facility for each. Cheers.

Hey guys, great vid,thanks for that. To help us with our next build, I’ve got 2 questions. First, You mentioned going a smaller roof hatch, we’re thinking of deleting roof hatches, I’m interested why you are going to keep the hatch and not free room up for solar. Second, you briefly mentioned the chassis coating, I’m a bit of a Galv traditionalist, how have you found the black coating in the stone impact areas ie drawbar and directly after the van tyres, is it chipping off? Keep up the great content. Ps darker/moody interior colours are brilliant, had them in our last van and will go that again. Can send you our colours in the van we just sold if it helps. Jason and Mon
@TheLifestylePioneers14 сағат бұрын
The roof hatch just worked out with the solar layout. Deleting it wouldn't allow for any more panels so we figured why not. The chassis coating is holding up really well, even better than gal. We're a big fan of it.
@hsvme65089 сағат бұрын
@ thanks for that, I’m still struggling with the thought of letting go of galv :) Makes sense with the hatch if there’s no benefit from extra solar panels. one thing to consider we noticed on our last van, that a reasonable amount of heat came through the closed hatch. That was another reason we were considering deleting. The insulated roof without openings will do much better at keeping the inside cool and help make life easier for the AC. Food for thought. I think we’ll still delete them in our next van, even if the solar panel numbers aren’t affected.
@TheLifestylePioneers9 сағат бұрын
@@hsvme6508 interstingly we find having the hatch helps the hot air escape and helps keep the van cooler without the AC on. Having had both (with and without) we're keen to try and keep one.
@hsvme65089 сағат бұрын
@ that makes sense, but alternatively, wouldn’t the exhaust fan be better at that? Also have you tried the DRS to push out the initial hot air when first opening the van after being closed. And not being critical at all, I’m genuinely interested as we’ll be making the same decision. Middle of the day when the suns belting in we found it too hot.
@TheLifestylePioneers8 сағат бұрын
@@hsvme6508 potentially, we have the ensuite exhaust fan, but like the natural light the we can get in with the hatch as well. I don't think the DRS would push enough air to be effective, but it probably helps. Agree with the direct sun being a problem though, we often keep it closed with the blind pulled over during the middle of the day.

I have a combo bathroom do you recommend the wood floor on top ?
@TheLifestylePioneers14 сағат бұрын
Yeah, it works really well. This one is the plastic fake timber which is probably more moisture resistant

Just run house panels on your vans 50v panels running through 250/100

Dont agree with those toilets. Raw sewerage in a public bin that some council worker has to clean out if it splits, kids and homeless cpllecting recyclables out of bin could be exposed to sewerage, if you empty ever few days 100's of extra plastic bags going into the environment. Thought you guys would be looking for best environmental option.
@TheLifestylePioneers14 сағат бұрын
Fair points, it only equates to a few bags a year and we're looking at compostible bag options which will also allow us to bury it if we're in suitable areas.
@annepowditch554313 сағат бұрын
@@TheLifestylePioneers thought you empty every 3 days. Thats 117 bags per year. That's what another utuber said they have to do.
@TheLifestylePioneers13 сағат бұрын
@@annepowditch5543 we only empty every few weeks. Every few days wouldn't work for us and the way we travel.
