Big Picture: U.S. Army Cold Weather and Mountain School - National Archives and Records Administration - ARC Identifier 2569762 / Local Identifier 111-TV-525 - DVD Copied by Liz Pruszko - Department of Defense. Department of the Army. Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations. U.S. Army Audiovisual Center. (ca. 1974 - 05/15/1984). Deep in the heart of the Alaskan wilderness, a picked group of soldiers climbs the rugged peaks and glaciers of the far north. These are soldiers of the United States Army attending a unique school -a tough, rough, demanding school specializing in equipping troops to live and fight under Arctic conditions. This week THE BIG PICTURE joins a class of volunteers at the U.S. Army Cold Weather and Mountain School. Travel along with us as these soldiers learn mountaineering, rope bridge construction, and other skills in one of the world's most hostile environments.

As a former mountain climber, this reminds me of why I never even thought about joining the military 🤣😂🤣😂

An interesting view of training back in the day. Gear and techniques have changed (and not changed!). A date might be good... Looks like late 50's due to vintage Helicopters, but that's a guess. Dare I say there was a Black soldier as the best in class??

I agree.mid to late 1950s/early 1960s time frame. While they could still be used, those Piasecki CH-21 Shawnee aka Banana Helicopters, were retired in the mid to late 1960s?

I hate synthetics. I sweat tons so it does not make a difference in "wicking away". Canadian Army 1980's had cotton clothing in the winter and we didn't suffer. remember the "O" in "COLD" - overheating, avoid it!

@@timp3931 you will know why cotton is bad for winter as soonas you start sweating.
