Everlanders

Күн бұрын

With just over 3 weeks left on our Visas, we decided to drive to El Cocuy National Park in the Andes Mountains on the border of Colombia and Venezuela. There we intended to meet up with our friends Ulf and Berna, hike to some glaciers, and have a great time.
But the morning after we arrive our steed of an Inverter finally let out the magic smoke. Being that we are 100% solar powered for our cooking, this was a big blow. Getting anything shipped to us while on the move is very problematic. Import Taxes are often crazy and having no fixed address makes it hard.
I needed to make the judgment call to order parts to repair, or order a new Inverter. Both options would be tight for our timeline to get out of Colombia before our Visas expire. I decided to order parts, delivered in a week, but was unable to get it working. Now with only two weeks left, I needed to order a new Inverter... 4 week lead time.
We hiked glaciers and drove beautiful mountain roads, bla bla bla... But we still had to get out of the country. Then we fell in a hole, Then Ulf's truck lost power and needed to be towed up steep dirt roads.
Then our truck lost throttle control... No spare parts are available in South America, so I 3D print a geartrain to hack a potentiometer in place. 1 week left...
Finally, we make it to Bogata, get Ulf's truck to a mechanic, found a chowdered turbo, got new water filters, electronic parts, suspension research, and our new Inverter, then 20 hours south to the border of Ecuador where we exit on the last day of our Visa.

Love how you solved the over engineered Ford accelerator sensor. Let's make a delicate part to go in a commercial light truck chassis. The weakest component your solution is the Variable Resistor (on/off switch), when that one wears out and it will, because of the environmental conditions it wasn't designed to be in, replacements are available.

Liking the longer format. Well done on the glacier hike. I have added that to my list of places to visit. Such an unusual landscape. I was happy to see more of the rough road footage (compared to your earlier videos) and seeing how well the rig performs. It was interesting to see how much or little the box was moving relative to the frame flex off road (I am assuming you had the hold down pots released), especially compared to the typical springy swaying seen on the other truck. Yeah, the elevation was not kind to this wide load, I can sit still without issues, but after a ½ hour of strenuous activity I have a hard time suckin' wind... Team blue was a reluctant choice because they are 2x the cost, and because of all the burnt blue parts I've been dealing with lately. Made worse because they've offloaded warranty concerns to the dealer you originally dealt with... We've been helping some other travelers and the cost of shipping the dead unit back and then arguing with dealers to ship to Colombia has been a nightmare, not to mention the cost of the shipping rivaling the value of the product in the first place. Their dealer map is a bit of a joke too... Of the dozen or so I tired to work with, none of them have useful stock and they just middleman a purchase and order it once you prepay in full...

Thanks Bernie! I'm still leery about trusting the pedal for very long, I just can't bring myself to the many hundreds of dollars of shipping and importing a new pedal. Starlink has been amazing all throughout Colombia 🇨🇴. Cellular and Wi-Fi is often saturated and we were lucky to get one or two megabits per second. So having 250 MB reliable service has been quite the treat. Unfortunately the second we crossed into Ecuador the terminal changed its country code, and now receives no service until the regulatory agencies have given approval in Ecuador, targeted for Q4 2022. 🤞 www.starlink.com/map?source=rv

I had a similar problem. Upon installation, my Multiplus 24/2000 defaulted to zero charging current. Turns out it has two settings; a power limit AND a charge current limit. Took some digging to find that. And they're not all that accurate. The Multiplus 2000 does have a lower standby current than a Multiplus 3000, so it's easier on my battery. But even though it can operate down to 18.xx volts, the minimum low voltage restart voltage is 20.6V. So I added another inverter (Victron Phoenix 24/375 ) for my critical loads. That covers the entire range of a Tesla 6S LiIon battery stack, and has even less standby current, and restarts at 18.xx Volts.

Awesome video from start to finish thanks. I've often wondered why you didn't use the big blue gear. but now I know from comments and reply's. are you planning on integrating the multi with your raspi gear?

the shocks being dead are defiantly not helping your suspension, would see how replacing them and the bushes go before firing the fully loaded parts cannon at the problem.

To be clear, they are still damping just fine - granted they are leaking, but no bounce after a speed bump.

@@Everlanderswhen they are cooking they are probably suffering from cavitation and not damping much at all when really needed, bounce after a speedhump not a good indicator of overall function. some primemover shocks with large oil capacity or ideally for someone handy with tools such as yourself rebuild-able remote reservoir shocks with nitrogen accumulators if you want something that will last many years, just make sure what ever you fit you cant bottom out or over extend and you should be good.

I have one of those Victron 12V (you might have 24V) multiplus ii that I have not installed yet. Great manual ... but I had to get it PDF no hard copy... which I would recommend to keep if electronics are out.

Wow quite the series of events guys! Did I miss an update on the air system? We're you able to get the parts needed to plug/cap the air system to hold the panels in place again?
@Everlanders

It got cut from the edit, it was an easy enough fix once I had some time... The tank inlet was capped off, and I ran the system straight from the compressor with no tank for a couple of days until I could get the broken brass fittings out and a new drain valve put in...

hmm this video was the most interesting by far out of the 20 or so ive watched so far. not sure why it has so few views realativly. I was thinking a lot about your solar slide out pneumatic setup which is admittedly really cool, and how you had to ratchet strap it since your air pressure was low. I think a small motor and cable system would obviously be easier to integrate, but you gotta work with what you got and the air has a coushiney property of its own. i always feel like pneumatic cylinders wear out over time with use/age but maybe its more of an age issue. I was thinking though how you could add a hinge next time youre up there messing with stuff that kind of "hyper extends" and locks into one position, maybe with a magnet or something attached to give you better retention/wind resistance in either open or closed configuration. either way it seems like this was a rare inverter caused issue and its not too big of an issue now with all your DC conversions (which btw ive been wondering why almost no one does... its seems like every inverter is a huge liability and is just waiting to go out with enough use. that thing was a fire hazard too..). there is a 1930s AC to DC rectifier called a mercury arc rectifier but good luck finding one of those. they do last forever though... they dont go from DC back to ac... anyways... interesting video thanks for making it

I would advise against rooftop motors, cables, pulleys, and hinges for the harsh environments we've traveled, desert sand, sea spray, etc etc... that won't last long, motors need limit switches to stay in good order, and I've lost count of the industrial linear actuators I've replaced over the years,. jammed up geartrain, burnt up motors... In 7 years, of traveling 12 countries, 100,000km, this was the only time there has been any problem, and it was not the fault of the air actuators. It was a simple matter of the air tank drain plug having sheared off when we drove into the hole. (26:21) It was an easy fix after we got Ulf to his mechanic appointment...

@@Everlanders good info thanks for the reply. I guess there are other benefits to having compressed air on hand like fixing a flat or something i didnt think of otherwise. I think youre right, sometimes simplest is best. Filling the void space under solar panels when its maybe windy and theyre not in use, while also extending them to have really good circulation and some added share just seems like the best idea ever in terms of efficiency and durability. I bet this will become a standard eventually. Something in my head just wants to hear them click into and out of place like an airplanes landing gear lol. speaks for itself though if they have never directly failed on you with all that heavy use and time.

Jason. I see you now have startlink. I thought it was strange in the other video when you said that to travel internationally you would need to purchase the hardware again. Is it the case, like here in Australia, that you can "roam" for up to two months but then have to join a plan of the region or country that you are after that time?

@@Everlanders so you don't really need to change your hardware. That makes sense. We are setting up a truck here in Australia for international overlanding and I was taken aback when you said that hardware needed to be replaced every time you changed countries. Now I can order it a bit more confidently. They are running half price on the hardware until the end of the year
