Sump pump is the most reliable and does not rely on water flowing down. Tile is the least expense for operation but not sue of long term stability. I like the idea of both. At first I thought the French drain would require less maintenance. However, I know that you've had to replace a few drains in the fields, which amounts to maintenance. What was the root cause (pun intended) of the damage to the drains? Will similar conditions exist near the pit? Regardless, if something can go wrong, it will. It's best to have a backup plan. Hence, the pump. Big words... Risk mitigation. 😜

Hi Cole, Cut a bunch of V looking slits in a small 5 gal Plastic pail and put it in your lowest area of the hole and install an automatic Sump pump sitting in the plastic pail. Run the Black plastic pipe up and tape the electric cord to it and away from the hole to a plug outlet ( on a Small generator or farm building ) and lay down the pipe all the way to a Ditch or lowland area. Then you'll always have a Dry Hole! : ) My luck with a Natural Drain line to a Nearby Creek was a Disaster! The Drain tile pipe got crushed while being backfilling, the down grade was messes up. Nearby tree roots invaded the pipe. The Creek froze at the outlet pipe end... Etc etc... It was a $1,000.00 wasted. Sump pump worked 100% A Ok : )

The only input I can add is cover the pit. Lessons learned from the past. Also I suggest making the pit big enough for future double bottom trailers or trains. Never heard of a French drain but if your water table is that high a drain of some sort will be required. Just make sure it’s below the frost level but you already know that. Take care, stay safe & good luck with the all farm construction. Cheers

Prep for both. You don't necessarily have to put the sump pump in right away. But at least leave the spot and electric for it. That way if the French doesn't work as well as you thought it would or if you ever get a freak storm with lots of rain you can put in the pump as back up.

On the drain question, I’ve been building for 40+ years. It’s always better in my opinion to rely on gravity rather than a pump. Gravity never goes out it never breaks. That translates to a French drain even if you have to run the pipe a couple of hundred feet it’s still way way better

Hey Cole, from my experience, I'd put a sump pit in with a tile drain leading out of it. And I would not put it on the bottom of the sump pit. That way if there is corn and such that gets in there, hopefully it would sink to the bottom and the water would drain out. Or just a divider wall like a Septic tank to keep the solids from going into the line. And just keep an eye on it a clean it out if the solid side fills up. But obviously I'd but a pump in there as well as back up. I'm a big fan of drianage lines. Have fixes a lot problems in my work. I'd even run weeping tile around all the bin to keep it very dry. Fyi, one day if your dad wants some great pizza, send him our way. We know how to do pizza out here in Saskatoon, SK. God Bless

Exactly. Plan ahead, anticipating the need to periodically clean it out. Effectiveness of tile/french drains will depend on the soil. From the video, it looks like clay, to a sump pump backup would seem like a good idea. Look for the highest capacity pump you can find. Maybe even a second pump as a backup to the backup. Having a second pump saved my basement from a Biblical flood.
@kenberns58313 жыл бұрын
Sump Pump is the way to go, you can direct the water where ever you want it. A French drain typically needs to run level or down hill which means you would have to get as low as the pit with your drain tile.... not sure how well that would work. Then there is the clogging problem as mentioned by others. A sump pump gives you more versatility.
@johnself4633 жыл бұрын
