Ryan, the squelch button on your CB will come in very handy for you. It allows you to tune into signals that are close to you, and cuts out the weaker ones. As for using it? Just come up with your own CB handle(name you will be using while talking on it), and when on the road, use channel 19(truckers channel) give your handle first and then ask for a come back from anyone that can hear you. Channel 9 is used only for emergencies in case you need a smoky bear(cop). Years ago you needed a license to operate one, but not anymore. I can still remember my license call letters from back in the seventies and eighties.

My friends gave me my handle, Cactus Apple. It has meaning, I was also from Arizona, and I thought it was a good choice. In the early 90's, no cell phone then, my son and I broke down on the highway in my pick up and I called for help. I've never seen an 18 wheeler pull over and stop so fast in such short of a distance before in my life! Truckers are awesome! Anyway c.b.'s are excellent tools, fun to use and you meet great people. Just obey the rules :) ! You'll enjoy it and will be glad you have it! Have fun!

One at the house and one with me so parental units could keep track of me. We didn't bother with licenses or handles - just push button and say mom, dad, or steve. When we picked up a used Base Station, and got a license, the first time I went on, someone immediately asked what my handle was. My handle??? I had to think quick. Instantly I saw it. Right on the Base Radio I saw the model name. "oh, my handle is "Executive'. I regretted that not so smooth move into the mid '80s when I went Unplugged. sdh in CT

do not buy cheap tires your life is worth more than that.. good tires that are reasonable are Kumho tires they last good and they won't break the bank.

Double coin and Leo are good but cheap. My dad bought them for a long time for otr trucks. I remember well because I changed them, only ever had to replace 1 pair due to something other than normal wear, now do not go a mild tread for drives the more aggressive the better. I remember come November I was replacing drive tires but in the summer they'd get run till they were out of spec I'd cut some grooves to make them legal again and that would get them through till winter. But with the tarrifs might be cheaper to buy good Bridgestone tires now.

Preventive maintenance is the key , take care of the equipment and it will take care of you . Oil changes , grease etc are your friends . If you will indulge me, I do have a suggestion based on personal experience. Once you get your tires replaced, don't waste time trying to learn to drive the truck without the trailer. When you go in to do the drive test, you have to back and drive with it on anyway. You might as well just put it back on the truck and learn with it. Turning and backing takes some getting to get used to if you've never done it before. Its not a big deal, it will just follow right along behind. The more time you spend in it, the better you'll get! I spent a whole weekend just driving around the neighborhood and practicing my turning and backing. Good luck!

I Drove Trucks in the Army as 64C/88M The hardest thing is blindside backing learning to control a load downhill as you know from Travis driveway gravity can really push a load and the other thing that caused more than a few of our drivers problems was rolling back when starting out on a incline and rolling back into a car. Instead of using the Johnny bar (Trailer service brake lever) as a hill hold until they got going. Hopefully with all that gravel you put down you can get lined up to the bins without backing up. As they drilled into our head was avoid back as much as you can and when you do have a GROUND GUIDE ! ! !

Of all the things you could have spent money on and all the things you could have done, I must admit, I think you made the best decision you could have. Not just for yourself but if you decide you want to pull flatbed or whole grain for other people or what have you, you're going to have income coming in, and as you said I'm like a tractor this will directly pay for itself. Learn as much about that machine as you can, make sure everything is kept up, works, may you always have all paperwork on you at all times. Very good decision Ryan. Best of luck to you in your new endeavor.

Hey Ryan, I just drove a semi for the first time over the weekend. It was about 100 miles round trip. It took a trip up there and back to REALLY understand the shifting. By the second trip it was much easier. Watch youtube videos on the shift pattern you have and the rpms to be at when shifting. It helped me out tremendously! Problem is, if you want your CDL make sure you double clutch and get in that rhythm cause they will make you for your test. I have a bad habit already floating gears. Which is the way you will always drive after the test. Good luck buddy!

Virgin tires for the truck, recaps on the trailer. Grease it regularly and check the fluids daily. Every time you put steers on it, make sure the shop does an alignment and more importantly does a runout on them to make sure they are clocked properly and they will last 2x longer than just throwing them on any which way. Over all, have fun and enjoy! Good purchase!

Great idea for a great investment, Ryan. I"d suggest both you and Travis get your CDL's just to be safe. I know if you get farm plates and only drive in WI you don't technically need a CDL but since you haul to IA, you will need them. I drove Over The Road, both dry van and flatbed heavy haul for over 14 years, so I'm very familiar with those older Freightliners. I'd seriously consider getting 4 drive tires to replace the worst ones and put them on the front drive axel, as that is the one that supplies most of the driving power to the road. Check your tread depths also, as that is critical. And keep doing pre trip inspections daily. One thing I don't know the answer to is, if you will need to get an electronic logging kit or not, since you'll not be for hire. Good luck and if you need any help with the truck, let me know.

Turn the ratchet over on the tarp support strap that runs front to back on the left side before it tears the tarp. Next you need a USDOT number you can apply for that online your self that cost $300. Once you get your number you need a UCR permit to transport exempt ag commodities that is $76. Before you operate truck you need to do a driver file for everyone that will drive the truck (driver record, employment application pre employment drug and alcohol testing, drug and alcohol discipline policy) A maintenance log for truck and trailer, and a few other things all this info is in the green DOT hand book. the US DOT will come do an audit of all your records with in the first year of operation to make sure you are complying with all the laws and determine if you are fit to continue operation. Insurance will be cheaper thought the farm versus a independent commercial semi policy because you are a new cdl holder. Good Luck I'll try to answer any question you might have.

Nice old truck! Looks like a good decision. I think I would start out with a new set of drive tires. No retreads on drive wheels.

You might want to consider taking a drivers course from a school. Learning from an old hand like me can help but most of us pick up some bad habits while driving. Plus it would make it easier to get your CDL that way, you can tear up their equipment....

Nice! Freightliners are good trucks, I drove them for years. You will like it.

Freightliners are called freightshakers for a reason...idk bout the older ones but i had a 2003 Columbia and it shook so bad it broke the dash n all the plastic in the truck came off eventually

I so proud of you Ryan you are taking a big step into becoming more profitable 200 may not sound like much but 10 truck loads that turns into 2000 easy and can pick up hauling jobs to help pay for the truck. It's an asset on the farm and with more acres for production will help that bottom line in the future.

@John Haas well here it as I see it they love their farm and it's an asset to them is the farm and even if they only use truck for transporting corn and soybeans to be sold. It's a benefit to them for the every simple reason they are not paying a third party for transporting their crops.

That truck looks like its in pretty good shape! Congrats on your new toy. You may want to go ahead and power wash that part that the trailer hangs over while you have it unconnected..

Keep your foot off of the clutch after you start rolling. Only use it to stop after that. Float the gears by matching engine speed to the gear you should be in. Remember, there is a clutch brake when you push it all the way to the floor. It's easy to destroy it by pressing down too far while rolling. It will make it real hard to get in gear if you don't have it. That was my first semi problem when I started almost 30 years ago. No one told me. My first truck (I had driven trucks for others until then) was a 1991 FLD120. I loved it.

Nice truck and sounds like you got a good deal...please don't put recaps on truck they don't last..buy new and put on front drive axel...also always put duals on in pairs that way they will wear evenly...have an experienced driver give you instructions and practice practice and practice...you will do fine. Good luck!
@sisutrucks6 жыл бұрын
best to have even worn tires on the tandem, and stay away from chine made stuff. i use hankook as i get a good deal on them. very pleased with that brand.
@Vaneps06 жыл бұрын
Recaps last just fine.
@sisutrucks6 жыл бұрын
@@Vaneps0 really?. the problem with recaps are the casings rot out, and when they blow they throw the tread off and make much more damage then a new tire will if that blows. no cost difference to speak of anyways nowdays. i get double coin tires just as cheap as redtreads. cheaper china tires for much less.

Not only can you haul but also do storage rentals especially for beans on weekends when the elevator is closed. Use an empty small bin and weigh the load. Haul when the elevator is open and add 10 cents. You'll be the call that keeps combines running getting the crop in before all hell breaks loose in the fields. Great addition.
@eddeetz4936 жыл бұрын
You also saved taxes on 22,000 in income this year. 100% write off the year of purchase. With a dryer you could also deliver dry beans and corn using a wet bin and make money vs the elevator dock fees.
