// Lyrics //
How long? Is what you asked
How long do you think it’s gonna last?
You at the corner store
You were stocking up before the storm
Stacked yourself against the odds
Talkin back to an act of god
You and your clever mouth
You were laughing when the lights went out
I recall it all forever
How it found us where we lay
With our arms around each other
In the latter days, in the latter days
How high? Is what you said
How high do you think it’s gonna get?
You at the water's edge
On the jetty when you were a kid
Passed around a plastic cup
Passed out spinning in the house where you grew up
You in your childhood bed
And the wildest dream you ever had
You recall it all forever
How it found you where you lay
And you called out for your brother
In the latter days
I recall it all forever
How it found us where we lay
With our arms around each other
In the latter days
How high do you? / how high do you?
I recall it all forever
How we sheltered in our place
And we called each other lovers
In the latter days
I recall it all forever
How there was no hiding place
So we called each other brothers
In the latter days, in the latter days

Wondering what y’all think about the meaning of the last two choruses, specifically “We called each other lovers” and then “We called each other brothers.” Is this the end of a relationship? I know Aaron said the song is about the loss of childhood innocence. Having a hard time defining that in context. Is it a first love gone sour? Appreciate feedback. Beautiful song, really excited for this record.
@rainbowpearls9372
@rainbowpearls9372 3 жыл бұрын
As u said that this song is about losing ur childhood innocence, that's what it is. I think its overall about losing the childhood innocence,the memories,the people. According to me the last part means that they didn't have a place to hide, meaning that they had to leave and they couldn't stay in that place forever. They have to grow up, move on with their lives, and they'll never be together as they'll move and busy in their lives .So they called each other brothers, means said goodbye. I may be wrong but that's what I got:)

The two choruses could also be from two different people where one is remembering their lover while the other is remembering their brother. Also if you look at it from the perspective of a m|m relationship, it could be that they were lovers (while still being in the closet) but they knew that they could not continue whatever they had for forever. So when the time finally came they parted ways and just referred to each other as brothers. I tried my best. 😅

Can't stop listening to this song. Btw, does noone else recognize the post-rapture reference here? "I recall it all forever how it found us..., "how there was no hiding place" and c'mon its called "latter days" . Though it also reads as a song about how humans pull together when faced with a cataclysmic adversitic. Either way, I'm obsessed with her voice and this song. Glad I discovered BRM and Anais.

This is my first time hearing this song and i can't get enough. I love it so much. The female vocalist deserves all the praises and Justin's parts are *chef's kiss* tbh. and i wish Aaron Dessner could be the producer of all the songsssss on Earth😭😭 as for the lyricism - i think it's a beautifully sad song . and maybe it also has a reference to men who loved each other and were too close to each other like in that line in the final verses *we called each other lovers* and in the very final verse it's *we called each other brothers* maybe they did that so they could stay close to each other and evade the society's negativity and hatred. I'm sure there's more to it and we'll discover as we listen more. this is just my take on listening v first time to it. Please please make sure to add more to this theory or negate it with logic :) God bless everyone behind this song and all the listeners❤
