It's very, very simple. Slide the 5th wheel toward the light end. Slide your trailer axles toward the heavy end. If you're heavy on the drivers & light on the steer, slide the 5th wheel toward the light end, to the front. If your heavy on the trailer tandems and light on the drives, slide the tandems to the heavy end, to the rear. When sliding the 5th wheel if you have air suspension, lower the landing gear ( dolly down) till the feet just touch the ground then dump the air. Now you have no weight on the 5th wheel and it slides very easily. unlock the 5th wheel, move as many holes as you think you need to, lock the 5th wheel, re-inflate the suspension and raise the legs back up. Generally there are two types of sliding 5th wheels. Ones with the holes closer together shift about 250 LBS per hole, ones with the holes spaced a little farther apart move about 450 LBS per hole. One time shifting and paying attention will tell you which you have. Same with trailers there are some that move about 250 LBS per hole and some that move about 450-500 LBS per hole. In this video he is figuring about 250 per hole on the trailer, see time hack 4:36. He is figuring to move 750 pounds from the trailer to the drivers. His trailer is 34,560 now. If he moves 750 to the drivers the tandems will be 33, 810. His drivers are at 32,480, if he puts 750 on them they will be 33,230, close enough. Actually moving 4 holes (1,000LBS+/-) would be closer. The trailer would go from 34,560 to 33,560 and his drives would go from 32,480 to 33,480, within 100 LBS front to back. Better balance gives a better ride, more balanced braking, better handling around curves, more even tire wear, and other advantages.

I was always taught to slide the axle toward the weight. If the trailer was heavier than the drives, you moved them toward the rear. If your drives were heavy, you slid the tandem forward. I never had to move the fifth wheel. I was probably lucky in that respect.

You really need to set your tractor brake when you get out. Even though you have the trailer brakes set, the truck can still move if the tractor brake is not set. Remember slide towards the problem. If the problem is the drives, slide towards them.

I often found that looking out the driver's window at the ground was the best method to gauge how far I had slid the tandems when I was trucking. I often would pick a particular piece of gravel or mark in the pavement to use as a gauge. I would over shoot a lot less when I did that than when I just guessed at it. Just a suggestion if drivers are having trouble getting them in the spot they want them in.

that's what I said in the video and what I did My weight was on the tandems so I slid the tandem towards the rear of trlr taking the weight off my tandems and putting it on the drives

over 4000 power units in the US and 400 power units in Canada not a small company and they do seem to have a lot in the Eastern half of the US but one of their biggest lanes runs between Canada and Mexico with stuff going into Mexico being the largest as we have 3 terminals in Texas alone

Our trailers are 6” centers. One hole is approximately 400 lbs. fifthwheel is approximately 200 per single hole

I always try to put more weight forward, so that I’m not dragging it. Think of the trailer like a big sack full of potatoes. It’s easier to pitch it up on your shoulder, than it is to drag them in the ground. 😉👍🏼

The new trucks actually give more or less power depending on weight on the tractor. I try to get the truck tandems between 200 and 1000 pounds heavier than the trailer tandems. That seems to be the sweet spot range.

Seeing that, I'm so glad we just run tri axles on most of out trailers here in Australia. You don't have to worry about fiddling round with shifting the axles and turntable (fifth wheel).

I learned that is not unusual and is probably due to the scale shaking. If the variation is 100 lbs or less that is acceptable.

@@Artlopez105 if it is the nearest scale it is the nearest scale. Unless you have the scale built into the truck. If you have a scale 10 miles away but its the wrong way so you chose to got to the one the other way but is 60 miles thats on you. But if there is legitimately no scale nearby all you can do is go to the nearest scale. If you are pulled into a weigh station you tell them there were no scales and you were going to the scale they should give you a chance to weigh at their scale.

Oh ya guys, one extra very important thing NOT TO DO WHEN WEIGHING. *** NEVER PULL YOUR RED TRAILER BRAKE HANDLE, BECAUSE IT WILL SCREW UP YOUR TRUE TANDUM WEIGHT (sometimes up to 1,000 lbs) SINCE THE SUSPENSION AIR BAGS DROP DOWN. Think about it, when you roll across a dot scale or down the road, your air bag SUSPENSION system is fully filled. So why in the hell would you pull it on a cat scale or a dot scale ????
