Big Scam Risk After CrowdStrike Breaks Millions Of Computers

David Bull and James Ball discuss the recent software update at CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity company. David questions the lack of proper checks and balances in an update which broke millions of computers, while James highlights reliance of many companies on a single provider for cybersecurity services and the potential for malicious attacks. They analyse the causes of the data breach and the need for increased cybersecurity measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
James Ball warns people that they have to watch out for scams, and if people receive a 'call out of the blue' from Microsoft, "it's probably not Microsoft".
Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike said on Sunday that a significant number of the 8.5 million Microsoft devices that were impacted as a result of a global tech outage related to a software update were back online and operational.

When I was nursing in the 80s everything was on paper & our hospitals were fantastically run. Now you get an ambulance (if you're lucky) for your elderly relative, & you have to list all the pills they're on. And once in the hospital, you have to tell them again, and again, and again. Not a fan of IT, or smartphones, or speaking to machines, or any of this rubbish. It's making us less capable, not more.

When full digital loomed, those who warned that totally removing the paper trail backup are being vindicated. Anyone with half a brain knows that digital will always be vulnerable to total blackout, either through errors or criminal activity. The tech geeks of course will always claim the invincibility of their product. Cash is king now.

The issues you mention are nothing to do with technology, nor IT. If the NHS use poorly developed systems, or multiple systems that don’t communicate with each other, then you get these fragmented systems. Your IT systems are only as good as the developers who create them, and the investment made into producing fit for purpose systems.

I worked in IT in a large organisation and they pushed a network update that refreshed the IP addresses on all the network machines. Unfortunately all the printers were assigned using fixed IP addresses so we lost every network printer. We had to go around and manually reassign the IP addresses on each printer directly. Additionally there were some headless Linux machines that did the same thing. It was a job just to find these little boxes and then we had to manually LAN in from a Laptop and reassign the IPs that way. Took us about 3 solid days to get everything working.

Anyone with a brain doesn't need it to go wrong to know that society has lost the ability to function without it. Thats the real problem. This was for most just a massive inconvenience and a headache for those working in field's that were affected. The problem is the internet is a vulnerable thing, be that bad humans, human error, rogue ai or the sun farting in our direction too violently. In a small number of years we have changed the way we run everything. Even electricity and gas meters are connected to the net. The telephone lines. Shop systems, you name it and today in one way or another it accesses the internet to function. In half my life ive seen the rise of the internet, and tech in general....im not even 50 yet. Thats how quickly we have turned ourselves into a globe run entirely by accessing the internet, thats worrying.

The Internet was not made for 'nerds to message each other' as James states, it was created by the US Defence Department as a reliable packet switching network for military use, being able to withstand the loss of sections of the network during a war time situation. The underlying network that is the foundation of the internet is incredibly robust. The stuff we have built on top of it less so maybe for sure. This incident was not an internet issue as such, but a failure of Windows computers that are today typically connected via the internet.

Yes it's a warning. Don't create a system totally reliant on digital without a manual backup. A society built to survive without digital, everyone and everything can rely on it's stable physical base, physical money for example. We can then boost life with automation and digital systems for efficiency, without reliancy and risk of total shutdown in the event of something wrong or bad.
