Hello friends, For the record - Cdl Sean Confirmed my children in the Traditional Rite and has promoted and protected the diocesan TLM in its three Boston incarnations - I know of this First-hand. His Auxiliaries Bp. O’Connell & Bp. Reed have done the same. I recently served a Pontifical Solemn High Mass offered by Bp. Reed. Although the Cdl is not a Rad Trad like most of us in Anthony’s audience - and I know all his ‘Greatest Hits’ that Trads like us love to despise - he has been a Friend of Tradition here in Boston and has sheltered us from the many attacks of Rome. He is an old style democrat, and we need to oppose churchmen who advocate for economic policies that are ruinous to the average American as he has. I am thankful for the good he has done, but there has been a lot of bad. Allowing Obama to speak from the pulpit at the Cathedral in 2013 typifies the dark side of Cardinal Sean.

@joan6187 oh, he is a modernist but for some reason he is lenient with the Latin mass community here and promised (which he has kept for 15 years) the pastor of the largest Latin mass parish in the state that he would not combine the parish and declared it an open parish that jurisdiction applied to the whole ADoB (i.e., no geographic boundaries). Modernist, yes. Helped the Latin mass community, gotta give him credit.

Bishop Henning, in the least, was friendly to the FSSP in Providence, including speaking at a High Mass. Also, of note, he has not put any restrictions on Diocesan priests in their ability to publicly say TLMs.

I'm from the Boston area nd now live overseas. Cardl O'Malley was part of the C9 circle of PF and had alot of issues and tension when he ran the committee to oversee abuse protection issues for children...some of his committee staff resigned out of frustration bc the complaints were that nothing really got accomplished. Yes the Boston diocese was soft given the bad reputation and history of pedophile priests lurking and moving them around parishes. He took over when Cardl Law got his 'get out of jail free' pass and scurried over to hide under the protection of the Vatican. O'Malley and his current prelate clergy staff including his vicars have been known to also be very tolerant of progressive movement liberal left LGBT inclusives even in the school system.and hiring such staff and tolerant of those who pushed for reproductive rights. I remember how frustrated we were in my parish of rallying to get the green light from a resistant O'Malley to allow pro-life signatures tables set up in defense for political election agenda..He pushed the malevolent covid vax esp with the mandate for clergy after he closed our churches for the longest time and then he denied clergy the right to write exemption letters for parishioners/employers who wanted job protection from the vax mandate. ..His persona had been annoyingly a low key baratone with a passive, rigid stance dressed in his Franciscan in the shadows as he ruled with an iron hand. I met him twice including when I was in the Laity Master's evangelization program at St John's Seminary in Boston. I knew priests who were frustrated and did not feel heard or his support as their shepherd. I respectfully wrote two letters of protest to him in rebuking his hard lined agenda especially during covid...but typical....no response. I was especially upset when the Diocese decided to lay low with little to no visible protests from Boston Catholics, just pray in your churches, etc. discouraging them from making their Bostonian views known when the vile Satanic Temple had their largest main conference held in the Copley Boston Waterfront Hotel. When I saw this new Archbishop from RI is from the pastor Jimmy Martin region as noted from the above comment, then my concern is their liberal progressive agenda in the Boston Diocese will continue without a hitch. Waiting for Jesus to return quickly to save us from this maddening deluge in HIS church. Amen and keep your eye on the Prize!

I'm in Providence and can say that Bishop Henning is an energetic, orthodox pastor who loves his flock and makes a special point of caring for his priests and the seminarians of the diocese. He came to my parish church about 5 times in his short tenure here, a remarkable feat which I'm sure was repeated many times over throughout the diocese. I'm very sorry to see him go. God bless him!

Is it that the the church authorities no longer see themselves in a vocation but rather as employees just doing a job ? I live in the ADoB and I will say he was very lenient with the Latin Mass as churches still advertise them in bulletins despite the express abrogation from Rome. He also allowed a large virtually only TLM parish and apparently defended it allowing it to stay open even during the 19 issue. We also have a good deal or young traditional priests. He may have been a liberal but he was not oppressive to the TLM in my experience.

One exception- My Boston-area parish built /opened an Adoration chapel two years ago. It is a separate building from the main Church: Bp. Reed consecrated it bc Cdl Sean was away in Rome at the time. Our priests are pious and Traditional - wish all RCAB priests were that way.

There's even an article in America mag criticizing Ruffini's recent pathetic defense of Rupnik. The writer is Colleen Dulle. Part of Ruffini's defense of Rupnik = "Judge not..." and "Pray for...". Rupnik was expelled for disobedience, not for his acts with nuns. The Jesuits are not protecting Rupnik. But sure, there is a small Vatican clique that does.

I think the main reason that Bishop Henning was selected is because he has only been on the scene for a little over a year. He would not be nearly as experienced or as Savvy as someone else that had been a bishop for much longer. And therefore easier to control and to be influenced by Francis and Company....

Cardinal O'Malley has had a hard time in Boston. When he arrived his priests nicknamed their Franciscan archbishop "Brown Bag" and made fun of him. (The five auxiliary bishops in Boston were known as "The Sorrowful Mysteries.") O'Malley attempted to do things and often ran into yes-men who took no action. He was a "voice of reason" about the clergy abuse scandal when he came in, but the activist LGBT+ priests and religious by and large stayed on, worked to undermine him, and only in the last decade have they started to retire. Very, very slowly the new priests are coming into place, in smaller numbers but more orthodoxy. I see him as a Pope Benedict-type figure. He truly loved working with minority communities and would have been happy to work in mission countries his entire career.

O’Malley was planning on retiring, almost certainly. He recently made a couple of monsignors, which has been very rare in post conciliar Boston. He can still be a voice against clerical abuse. His tenure has seen nothing but decline in the Archdiocese of Boston. The priests of Boston have always complained that his focus has always been more on issues outside of the diocese. Henning is pretty innocuous. My guess is that Sean was extended the courtesy of being able to name his replacement. I was afraid that McElroy was going to be moved east, being a cardinal in a suffragan diocese who is considered (by some) to be an intellectual. This appointment comes as quite a relief, honestly.

I wouldn't assume there is anything strange about this. We in the Boston archdiocese have all known Cardinal Sean has wanted to retire for a while. In fact he wasn't allowed to, and we were surprised a replacement hadn't been named yet. There's no need to try and turn every event into some anti-pope attack against Francis. Some things are just what they are, a holy and tired old cardinal wants to ride off into the sunset (or in Cardinal Sean's case, return to his monastic roots, and support the church in quiet prayer as a capuchin friar. God bless Cardinal Sean, and May God bless our incoming archbishop and the archdiocese of Boston.

Our Bishop emeritus retired a few years ago also. He's completely fit and is still involved in pro life events, etc. Maybe these older Bishops are just sick of what's happening in the Church and can't take it any longer. As a Nurse, I often saw people with chronic illnesses (such as the metastasis in the Church) and they finally would just get tired of fighting and death was then imminent.

Corrections once again to what Anthony is saying here about Rupnik: 1) Rupnik was definitely NOT expelled over the acts with nuns. He merely claimed that he repented, and therefor was not consequently expelled. However, restrictions were put on him, particularly that he not travel for his "art", which he violated. Rupnik was expelled for disobedience. This is not a matter of opinion, it is in the official document from the Jesuits (translated from Italian). Repeating false claims that the Jesuits expelled Rupnik because of the bad acts merely gives a false impression that the Jesuits acted morally. If he is 80, the retirement should have happened 5 years ago. Why are you saying this is so unusual? There is a little disconnect here....he sent the letter in 5 years ago and it has taken Francis 5 years to accept it. It isn't as though he just sent it in this morning and Francis accepted it in the spot like he has done with many of his enemies! I think you were kind of looking for a story today...

I think you are reading into this too much. Yes. At eighty, he loses the vote. Also, he has been the clean-up man at several dioceses. He deserves the retirement bc he is probably tired. Cardinal George was not in Portland long before JP II tagged him for Chicago. So these sudden moves are rare but do happen. And, Henning hit a home run with his press conference- he is unapologetically pro-life. Hopefully his pro-life stance rubs off on Cupich and Tobin.

I am very very sad what is happening in the Vatican Cardinal Malley and all cardinals priests , I feel the foundation what witness do I feel any connection now with Rome , I think I will pray about it , My faith in Jesus Christ is still firm and the Bible, but it’s important , what is Jesus saying to us,this Cardinal O Malley to resign from his post , why .?..?from some changes in Vatican 2 I was unhappy about the the religious habit of the religious organisations , to modernise them yes as some of the head great must have been very uncomfortable to this day and age , but they did need some recognition so they were in witness so people could recognise what they offered there lives and vocation a living witness of Faith to the world , we need our priest, and religious as well as we recognise the medical profession and other professions , we need good witnesses in our faith , if you think what the young generation are up against , modernism , technological advance artificial intellectual a digital age, the world is in danger nd humanity and Pope Francis I think is part of it , I have an open mind , very sorry to fear about bishop O Malley and other Suffering religious orders Cardinal O’Malley your in my Prayers please pray for us members in the Catholic faith ,and our Children they need to know Jesus Christ in there lives , especially in todays world , there is so much danger spiritually and physically, thank you God Bless, A,M,W,
