Nice scenery! Have never heard of this one, may have to go and ride it one day.

+JK Hammill I recommend it. You get on in Stearns Kentucky which is near the Tennessee border. You ride it to Blue Heron and you can get off the train for a while and hike around some trails and go on top of the old coal tipple. After you ride it back you can stay in a cabin by the tracks if you want to. We did a night hike to a big abandoned concrete trestle over the river. Its a cool place

My grandfather was born in Stearns in 1940. Sadly, we are expecting him to pass from heart failure any day now. He told me so many stories of the old steam engines used down there

One of those old steam engines is the 4501 at TVRM in Chattanooga, TN!

I've ridden the train a couple of times, but the way to see the gorge is by canoe. It's a beautiful 2 day rip, but should be paddled in 3 days to really rake it in. The little south fork is near it and even more remote, and wild. I paddled it a couple of times with my daughter. I'd like to do it one more time before I die.

+crusty old fart I hope you get to do it again. I agree with you. I would love to be in a canoe on it. We stayed in the cabins at Barthell and walked down to the river at night by following the railroad. We walked all the way to the old abandoned concrete bridge and even walked over it. That was awesome at night. My last canoe trip was on the White River in WVA. years ago. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Jaw Tooth I have paddled all my life, about 18,000 miles. My daughter skipped her college graduation, and went directly from school to the boundary Waters for a 3 week wilderness paddle up through canada, and back to minnesota with me. I haven't paddled much in years, because of my wifes poor health. I just restored my old solo Kevlar racer, and am getting back into it just as soon as I have time to dispose of my wifes body, and put a canoe rack on my car.

Just kiddin'........I just bought her a condo, near Charleston, SC. with all the amenities , so she'll get off my back when I hit the road on my wild assed month long trips. She ain't as adventurous as her daughter.

crusty old fart Month long trips would be awesome. I have a hard time getting away for just a few days anymore bc my kids are always into something. You have been all over the place in a canoe. Excellent hobby!
@grumpyoldfart73029 жыл бұрын
Jaw Tooth Get 'em a backpack, a canoe, and I'm sure they already have a bike.....and hit the road every chance you can while they're still with you.

There's a life-size picture of my Dad singing with the Blue Heron quartet (back in the 50's) in one of the shelters. The last time I tried to go, they said it was closed to the public. Can you still ride the train?
@JawTooth7 ай бұрын
Awesome! I have seen all the pictures so I would say that I saw it. You can drive to Blue Heron but when I was there last year the train didn't go that far because of flood damage. The train does run to the area that has the cabins. It is possible by now that it runs to Blue Heron but I haven't been there this year yet

Too bad the trains dont stop at the Barthell Mining Camp anymore. They use to stop there and give tours of the old mines and the old mining equipment.

You definitely need a steam locomotive to attract more people!
@JawTooth8 жыл бұрын
They have a steam locomotive that they are trying to get into operation. They have been working on it for over 5 years but it costs millions of dollars to get them running. I saw the steam engine about 5 years ago when they had it all stripped down and they were seeing what all needed replaced. I remember seeing the old steamer in a building near Morehead Ky back in 1979. When they get it running there will be tons of people coming from all over the world to see it. I cant wait! There are still some old steamers running but they are very expensive to operate and it takes a lot of volunteers to keep them running. A bunch of tourist lines have closed in the past 10 years due to insurance costs and lack of money. I have a bunch of steam locomotive videos in a playlist on my channel but I just started filming a few years ago. Anyway, thanks for watching and check out some more of my videos if you have time!
