Theme is Maynard Ferguson's rendition of "Theme from Shaft" off his 1972 album M.F. Horn Two -- the same album also has "Give It One," which Griffin used on the Wheel pilots in 1974.

So much going on here: 1. The theme resembles "Shaft" 2. The old "Wheel" timer sound 3. I won't give it away but one of the models resurfaced on another famous game show 2 years later 3. Pat Harrington was quite good on this 4. The Carruthers Company also produced "Second Chance" which have birth to "Press Your Luck" 5. Game itself is pretty entertaining.

2 things I noticed about this unsold game show were: That 10-second time/decision music would later be used as a cue for the bonus round on WOF when it was introduced in December 1981! Also look at the big cordless mic 🎤 Mr. Harrington's using for the end game only!

1. The end game was like a cross between the old Do-It-Yourself Showcase and Shopping Spree, both from TPIR. 2. What if they got someone with super math & memory skills as a contestant? They’d be able to keep a mental tab on how much the other teams have in their respective budgets, as well as average price for the remaining prizes, and an exact price for the last prize (as the total for all 7 prizes, which was revealed at the beginning, was equal to each couple’s budget)

Not to mention hubbie can show wifey on the sly using his fingers (flash-style) how much he 'banked' in their little ''pod'. I could see many opportunities for 'cheating' and unfair play like being 'backed into a corner' by Pat.
@someguy23475
@someguy23475 2 жыл бұрын
That's a major flaw you pointed out. I wouldn't give out the budgets to the other contestants. A smart mathematician would only have a general idea instead of the exact amount their opponents can play with.
@theodorehsu5023

I think the trick was, whatever you committed to one round did NOT go back into the pool, even if you lost or didn't spend it. Also, no bonuses for a "perfect bid," so no way you could get more cash.
@LogoMan7777
@LogoMan7777 2 жыл бұрын
They'd probably have some kind of math and memory test, and then they'd cast the people who didn't score 100%. They'd look in the middle of the curve for average contestants, because a really smart contestants (like the ones you're describing) would bankrupt them.

Yeah, I kind of expected Pat to come back around to the teams after the first break and talk with the wives. But yeah, it was the 70s. I think I'd fall out of my chair today if I was watching Wheel of Fortune and a woman said she was a homemaker. Stay-at-home parents are still a thing, both men and women, and I say more power to couples that can make that work, especially when the children are young. I find it surprising when anyone says they don't work, we just expected the women stayed home and raised children 50 years ago. What a world.

The awkward exchanges with the contestants shows Harrington wasn't the right fit as a game show host but some tinkering with the rules may give the game some potential. Add: Okay, here is my fix: round all the retail prices to nearest multiple of 25. All prices would end in 00, 25, 50, or 75. It wouldn't make sense to upbid less than $25. This would speed up the auction. Also, enforce a time limit between bid. The players are going to lose their budgets anyway so you might as well speed up the process.

It's pretty close to being able to go. I would make a few changes, and this show would work well. 1. I like the partners, but they should also know their balance between the rounds. See my next point. 2. They should do rounds one partner bids and then the other bids, and they both can bid on the last item. I like the aspect of the one hand not knowing the other though. That's interesting because it's a great concept. 3. There should be crowds shouting like on TPIR. If you have the crowd yelling go or stop whatever that makes it a bit more fun. The audience could really make this more exciting. 4. Hitting the price should also be a bonus of some sort. Either they get the item as a freebie and they get back the value of that prize to their balance. They could also get a bonus item that doesn't count to their total and they can keep if they don't win. They could also just get to keep the item they bid on and got right no matter what. 5. I really like the idea that you get eliminated at the overbid. So as long as you know you haven't heard the horn then keep going. The host should also know to call the minimum raise as they get closer because they have the value. So if the bid is $676 and the item is $688 then they could set the minimum raise to $5 etc. You get the idea. I also dig the fact he also called out for certain bids you never know if they are screwing with you. He has the value, and if he knows it's 1404 and he says I want to hear 1420. Its like zonk the host controls. However, that should stop once you have the first team out. I like the endgame, and the partner having the ability to change one item. Knowing this is a pilot and that has it's limits. If this had gone to broadcast they should have paraded each thing out in the sets if they could

At about 32 minutes, was this intended to fill more than a half hour, or did game play need to be trimmed down to fit into a 30-minute window if it had sold? People praise Pat. He was OK, but not great. I wouldn't praise his hosting. Kinda fun concept, but I'd find it rather repetitive and dull on a daily basis.
