My guess is that this era of Pyramid was taped at the former Bob Barker studio(33)at CBS Television City.

One thing I liked about Dick is that he usually thanked the announcer, as you always did on Tic Tac Dough, Wink.

1979 had been a trying year for Match Game. After hitting the #1 game show status for five consecutive years, CBS wanted to experiment with flexible time slots for the show as it was placed next door to The Price Is Right, the one it saved from extinction during its earlier afternoon times as network soap operas were preventing it from ever making it to the top three list. Unfortunately, this move proved to be less successful as its core audience of high school and college age kids weren't around to watch Match Game as they were already preoccupied with their educational studies. By the time it moved to its original time slot, its audience that they were hoping to regain was no longer tuning in. Then, on April 20th, 1979, CBS cancelled Match Game. There was no centralized reason for its demise on daytime as it was still doing well in the weekly syndicated nighttime circuits. Maybe it needed a break to refresh itself as, besides the Watergate coverage, each episode was airing non stop for a total of 1439 episodes. An additional 16 episodes wouldn't see the light until 2000 when GSN finally gave it the green light into their regular vertivision. And its syndication daily format wouldn't arrive for another 4 1/2 months. Match Game was out, But WHEW! was in!

I don't recall there being a syndicated version of Pyramid in the mid 80's. Maybe I just lived in a market that didn't air it. Thanks for posting!

This show really fascinated me back in 1980 when I saw it on CBS. Back in 2016 & 2017, I lived out the fantasy of being on it at TCONA by playing a replica of it with Hands On Buzzers.

Underrated show! Considering how short in time game shows are these days - this would be a good show to bring back considering it runs less than 20 minutes.

Wink, you left no stone unturned with your collection of pilots. I I swear you must have my personal creation of a show called “Choice” that I did in my bedroom with my brother and parents back in the early ’70s.

I'm guessing the reason Buzzr skipped this was the audio problems in the beginning. It's a shame this show didn't take off back when it first aired. It's such a unique game.

Cute concept. What if the front game ends in a tie? Only flaw is if game 1 player wins with 12 and wins the bonus but game 2 is won by the other player with 11 points then we already know they'd have no chance to return.
@AdamJ6173 күн бұрын
Had the pilot been given the green light, I would have to think that the theme going forward would have to be one of the unused cues from Body Language (1984), which you could find on TVPMM.
@johnanthony90473 күн бұрын
This was really fun show, but it had to be rough on Tom Kennedy as everything relied on him being perfect reading the questions every time - luckily he was. In a strange reversal, I preferred the main game to the bonus round. There was almost no excitement in Whew’s bonus round. That was actually done far better about a year later on the short-lived Pitfall.

The issue with Whew is it was just too complicated. I mean when you watch it, it wouldnt take to long to understand and it works well. But try to explain it to someone who's never seen the show.
