Don't think anyone high up at Nintendo even knows what a Steam Deck is, let alone getting hot and bothered, unless they had to do some emails with one of their lawyers. Steam Deck is big for us, but in the world of gaming, it is hardly a blip on the radar. Its total lifetime sales haven't even passed any of the big 3's lowest single year sales.

@ Like I said the lawyers may be on the case. But the higher ups have no idea. They may have seen it mentioned in memos from their legal team, but they get dozens of those a day I am sure. It isn't a household name. It is still a niche product that we enthusiasts are excited about, but the average Joe is clueless too. It's like talking about a Xiaomi phone to a random American.. they have never heard of the brand even though they have sold a few million units to Android enthusiast Americans. Now of course a Samsung or Apple exec know Xiaomi, but that it because it is huge in China and some other Asian countries. Steam Deck isn't huge anywhere. I am hoping that changes one day though. PC gaming is already taking off, a more unified hardware set and user experience could land well eventually with the mainstream.

@ Lawyers/legal departments generally do their own research and discovery, because: A. That is how they keep getting paid and have reason for employment. B. They know what they are doing, what they need to look out for, they know the laws and where they can hustle in. A marketing executive, a CFO, a director of development, a company president.. none of them has the knowledge or training to pursue something like that let alone the time or ability to focus on those things as they have their own specialty and full schedules. Executives are advised and sign off with their leadership abilities and skills, they aren't in the trenches snooping on ROM sites or at the dock investigating counterfeit hardware.

I think that any real dip in the sales of Steam Deck is a more complex stew than just pinning it on Switch 2. Don't forget the upcoming Legion Go S with SteamOS that some PC gamers may be opting to save for as well. There is also a smaller seasonal drop following the Christmas / gift giving season. January is the time that people are buying games for the Steam Decks they got for Christmas, which could also push it lower in the top sellers list, which I am guessing is a completely relative list.

Wayland is not a 'display manager' -- it's a set of protocols for graphical user interfaces. Weston isn't 'built in', it's a reference implementation for Wayland compositors. Wayland is the protocol or idea, not the actual software. Gamescope (SteamOS), Kwin (KDE, and Mutter (Gnome) are all different, unconnected implementations of the Wayland protocols, which define the relationship between the compositor (Gamescope, Kwin, etc) and clients (programs).

Its worth mentioning that weston is not builtin to wayland but a reference implementation of it. And as such, almost no end user uses weston. Projects like KDE and Gamescope look at Weston to see how they could implement these features themselves. So the changes from ACS will take some time to reach end users after reaching westons upstream.

I have been done with nintendo since around 2018 after buying switch and the poor quality of the hardware and controllers, and mainly because they sell unfinished games on carts that require large downloads to play. Biggest reason is their greed and how they treat fans and gaming preservation, and how they try to dictate how players play their games.

I was pissed. It was for the Mario Bro Melee Ultimate game... so naturally my 4 year old wanted all the characters unlocked already but I was doing the Adventure side and didn't want him interrupting the "training" so I tried to copy it over for him to have his own... only to find this out. The Craptindo save system is gutter trash!

I think the first advertisement already shows that Nintendo is going to try to compete in more than just their first party games. It even looks more like the steam deck. Nintendo obviously saw it, knows about it, studied it and they’ve realized that Valve even tried to copy the dock. It’s almost guaranteed it will play more than just Nintendo games if you look at it logically. Hardware power is always a question on any console. Hence, why I believe DLSS and working with NVIDIA is smarter than what Valve is doing. AMD is now considered the best for gaming consoles? Why? Because Valve is using it. FSR? Come on… DLSS could be the game changer on a handheld and Nintendo hasn’t shown what it can do yet.

The kernel 6.13 are supposed to have some new drivers for the Corsair void wireless headset (both pro and elite) but I haven't seen anything related to this if there is a gui for it or just something in the terminal. It's supposed to give us the battery life. I'm on the latest cachyos version which comes with this kernel but I haven't seen anything regarding this on the os.

@H4GRlD good on the heroic devs, but as far as I know gog itself does nothing for gaming on linux :( I like the DRM free attitude, but it only really works if you use windows. Right now, if I buy through steam, I actually visibly get some benefits, looking at what valve did for Linux.

@@2greenify link to the notes? If you're talking about ntsync, the driver will land, but some games will see significant increases, many will be less so. And the deveoper of the patch set themselves stated clearly that the results will be wildly dependend upon game and involved hardware. Only a few edge cases saw extreme improvements over existing sync methods. While the gains aren't insignificant, overstating them isn't always beneficial either. The biggest impacts will be in games that heavily utilize the ntsync system calls... game engines that don't won't be heavily impacted. And many games are already benefiting from the esync and fsync patches that are already out. This is an improvement on those, but you're not going to see anything more than approaching parity with windows (which is where ntsync was reverse engineered from).

If AAA Third Party games start coming to the Switch 2 like they do the PS5 and Xbox (think Call of Duty, Halo, etc.) then MAYBE the Switch 2 will compete with the Steam Deck, but right now I really doubt the two are in competition. You buy a Switch (2) because you want to play Nintendo games (and also appreciate/enjoy the portability), whereas you buy a Steam Deck because you want to play Steam games on the go or prefer the hand held experience. I think the audience for who is picking between the two and will only get one is much smaller than people are imagining. The same way Sony and Microsoft don't really consider Nintendo their direct competitors in the gaming market (maybe that changes with the Switch 2 if it's hardware really is that much more powerful).

Please stop that narrative about AMD GPU drivers being the best for Linux. There's still an ongoing issue with the Strix Point chips causing kernel crashes regularly. I'm lucky to have a discrete Nvidia GPU in my laptop, so I was able to find some workarounds, but the life of those who have only integrated graphics in those laptops is miserable.

Man, I tried Nobara yet again. Seemed like frame gen was better finally once i unlocked power on my 7900xt but still not as fluid as windows11 in Stalker 2. Gaming felt like there was a lot of latency still in comparison i can't figure out why, it's just not as smooth an experience. I recently got an OLED and OMG VRR flicker is so bad in Linux yet nonexistent in Windows. That was the big turn away this time. I was ready to give up HDR but not for that crap. I love the idea so I keep coming back with hopes, but I'm left with disappointment. And Linux users just tell me these problems don't exist lol. Well they do. And you shouldn't have to jump through hoops to fix them.
