During the Q & A portion of a recent seminar I spoke briefly about Big Stick training in Shuai Jiao and demonstrated a few different aspects of the practice.
The main purpose of training the 'big stick' is to develop the specialized strength and movement called 'Heng'. The main purpose of developing 'Heng' is to be able to off-balance your opponent in a very specific way to set up entries for throws. Understanding the purpose and application of the practice is very important in shaping body mechanics and developing correct intent in training.
Besides developing 'Heng' the stick can also be used to develop a better connection in the arms and waist in your solo practice. This usage of the stick though should be considered simply a supplement and variation of solo technique practice and not specific 'big stick' training.
