The atmosphere in this video somewhat reminds me of my childhood here in Russia, when the soviet regime has collapsed, but the retail industry didn’t adapt yet and still used soviet-style uniforms for the workers, signs and overall dull design choices contrasting with vibrant products on the shelves. Quite nostalgic!

I've been watching Mr. Parker for years, and I have said the same thing all along. Obv some people are in on the show, notice that him and the woman behind the service counter were bantering in English of all things.... i get the impression that if u know English in NK, and u are working retail. You are either in show biz, or the Ministry of State Security of the DPRK.
@RedDevil9264 жыл бұрын
I obviously understand that it's probably not easy to upload these videos, not only security wise (I'd assume) but because of a lack of a good internet connection or a connection at all. So time urges when uploading the content and maybe there's not enough time to write subtitles At least for me, and I guess to a lot of other people that have a deep curiosity regarding North Korea, one of the most interesting things to see is the interaction between two parties because a genuine interaction will go a long way in terms of us understanding what a real North Korean is like when not under pressure from a state-sponsored minder like we see in the majority of the videos out there. And although the video is great, keep in mind that without the understanding of said interaction, we're pretty much just looking at a NK store while a dude buys tea and tries to get a good deal on tissue papers. From what I see out there in terms of content about NK, and prove me wrong if you can, Parker's videos are the most truthful and the most up-close we have when it comes to the people in North Korea. the most genuine at least, although I also understand that he gets special treatment being a foreigner

Well keep in mind this is the capital. Most of the people who go to this store are high class and or some form of government employee. Which would explain why nearly no one buys anything here. Most of the shelves are fully stocked, and what I know from working at places like these in the US, if something is fully stocked it normally means no one is buying or it was just stocked like a few hours ago. This isn't too uncommon in the south, especially for a young woman and usually a 순한국말 (not Sino-Korean) given name. However, in this case I'd say it's much more likely that that woman is from China, perhaps 조선족. Can anybody make out the name on her name tag? Another curiosity: when he goes back outside after his shopping, we can see that he's parked next to a 40 year old Mercedes-Benz with the hood popped and a man working on it. On the door is "도로 순찰" which translates as "Road Patrol". I wonder what that is, likely not police and indeed I wouldn't expect the government to own a German car at all so I'm really curious. What you are showing seems very true and contradicts a lot of what the "documentaries" tell us. May I please ask you about, how you can just go around where you need when other keep saying that every non NK-person have at least two "guides". Have you made any video that explains how, why and what, about your status, task, life in the country? Have you tough of making any debunking of the "documentaries" that are mad about NK?
@VoltzTheMan4 жыл бұрын
Alot depends on your travel purpose, which is how youre allowed to enter the country to begin with. Most Westerners are forced to go through tour agencies due to the lack of economic and political relations with the DPRK, in which the tour group has a tightly packed schedule and is responsible for your well being, same can be seen on tour trips to other nations. If you are from a nation with good relations with the DPRK, there is more than likely other options to visit the nation on a Visa. However you must have a specific reason, such as business, education, etc.

I recall shopping in Moscow in March of 1980. There was huge shopping mall on Red Square called GUM. I went with a bunch of tourists & the consensus was the Stores were K Mart. We also went to government stores called Berioskas. I am sorry if I butchered the name. Any way to get in you needed a foreign passport. To buy anything you had to use foreign currency....dollars, francs, pounds, Deutschmarks.....The quality was markedly better than in the stores for the average Russian...
@cehaem2 Жыл бұрын
Most of these goods were imported, primarily from Finland or Sweden. Their main purpose was to skim off foreign currency. Soviet citizens that worked abroad were paid in foreign currency. The government exchanged their salaries and gave them instead Soviet Rubles and coupons that allowed you to shop there. Yes, you needed either a foreign passport or a permit.

I swear it looks like Russian stores looked like till 1997 or so and maybe still look like in small poor cities (minus the cashiers those were extra primitive even for that time). But the ''no music'', everyone looking like it's a funeral and everything that I guess is worth more than 10 euros in cristal vitrines, the resemblance is chilling. Made me remember my childhood and appreciate more my parent's decision to move out to a more developed country in Europe.
