It strikes me that HDR would be overkill for McCabe and Mrs Miller. This is not a movie that was ever intended to look beautiful. Vilmos Zsigmond used his famous flashing technique which literally limits the ability of the film stock to absorb light. In addition, many of the interior scenes are shot with natural light. HDR might lead to black crush in some scenes. Im not saying an HDR grade is impossible, but it is not really necessary and could lead to other problems. The 4k of the Deer Hunter, which is also a Zsigmond shot film, has HDR and the results are mostly great but some complained it was too dark. I think in this case the increase in resolution will be enough.

So HDR images are supposed to look really dark? I thought the idea was more detail in shadows and highlights, with an overall brighter image 🤔

I was hesitant about The Others Criterion 4K not having HDR, but it was phenomenal! Apparently, the director wanted it this way. Not sure why it’s not included with McCabe & Mrs. Miller, but I’m sure it will still look outstanding. Good video!

Its my understanding that HDR gives a transfer more depth in the shades of light and colour in the picture, that more closely emulate the depth provided by film. So i struggle to see why HDR would not be utilised when the technology is there. Its almost always the best aspect of enjoying a film afresh on a 4K disc, in my experience. I just hope the web publishers for Criterion just happened to forget to add the HDR flags ....

Hi Elliot. I am a proud subscriber to your channel here because you're one of the best. As far as Criterion using HDR... I believe they try all processes to see the results. If HDR doesn't show improvements but another process does, they go with the one that works. Maybe there's films that use multiple processes. I like to give Criterion, Arrow, Kino Lorber & all the other boutique labels the benefit of the doubt because they are doing an incredible job for us all. The same goes for what they do with audio. We are so lucky right now to be getting these wonderful classics! Hey, if I ever get over to your side of the world, we gotta do lunch & talk movies. This month's releases were some real surprises and they look really good. I'm especially excited for more Robert Altman in the Collection and the Heroic Trio set because it has 3 of my favorite actresses in it

@@Kev_Cos I have no idea what that has to do with anything. If one READS the Criterion descriptions of their discs one finds that the "Trio" 4K has HDR (probably Dolby Vision).

OMG! I've been waiting for Heroic/Executioners forever. Mine are DVD's. Both films are the same characters. I don't think Blu Rays ever happened before.

I would love to see Criterion release their 4K scan of 'Barry Lyndon' (spine 897) on UHD. Their Blu-ray released in 2017 was excellent but 4K with, hopefully, a few new special features would be most welcomed.

The french 4K release of Heroic Trio and The Executioner both come with HDR, so for Criterion not to include it would be a strange omission.

I really enjoy a good 4K disc, but the online obesession with HDR is comical. It's like one online reviewer said something about a disc not having HDR and then every other reviewer, who often struggle with independent thought anyway, echoed the sentiments...There's a reason HDR is measured in nits...

Seeing "The Roaring Twenties" included in the Criterion announcement last week was a big deal for me. It's a good thing anytime 1930's Warner Brothers gangster films are given the spotlight. Gotta reiterate the point I made in my previous comment, lol....the 4K/UHD option means nothing to me. Frankly I still love how my Warner Brothers dvd from the late 2000's looks (all those discs are excellent.) Bluray will sharpen it up to a more than suitable degree. Anymore pixels and it's like a constant reminder I'm....watching a fancy disc. Or, worse, it won't look like a film from the 30's anymore, it'll look like it was just shot last week. That's not ideal. I love James Cagney though and I will pre-order this disc for sure.

HDR = Revisionism. If a film is expertly scanned into 4K and the disc is carefully mastered, I don’t see that it’s necessary.

"McCabe and Mrs. Miller" is my favorite Altman film, but I do not like 4K. I know I'm in the 1% here. For me, 4K is just too sharp. And "McCabe and Mrs. Miller", in my opinion, is supposed to be murky and hazy. "More sharpness" or "more clarity" will never further enrich it for me. Again I know I'm in the minority here. I own thousands of blurays. I own only about ten 4K discs, and only because each time the 4K/bluray bundle was less expensive than the solo bluray release. Or, in the case of Criterion's recent "Le Cercle Rouge", the 4K/bluray combo was the only option. My "McCabe and Mrs. Miller" Criterion bluray is gorgeous. I've never once watched it and thought, "Man. I'm missing something here...."

No HDR - no buy. Labels must learn this. While non-HDR 4Ks obviously CAN look great, they are not on the level of HDR 4Ks, same as great regular Blu Rays. If they want 4K money they have to give us HDR, its defining feature.

OMG, Criterion is also jumping on the martial arts bandwagon , like Eureka!😖 Roaring Twenties is imho a by the numbers gangster film, typical 30 WB fare. Not bad, but vompared to Public Enemy...meh.😒

It makes perfect sense to not include it for The Others. It’s not a better/worse thing, it’s just a different aesthetic. The gothic look has a more appropriate aesthetic with less contrast and flatter light curves. As far as McCabe, I couldn’t say

Hello Elliot -- I am an Australian subscriber & wanted to thank you for the Indictor sale tip off and video. I purchased Modern Romance on your recommendation (hasn't arrived yet but very excited) The timing was perfect as this week a HBO documentary made by Rob Reiner about Albert Brooks screened -- it is well worth a look. I wonder if you might consider doing a tech video about the differences /advantages of 4K /HDR/ UHD/Dolby Vision (it's all gobbledygook to me!) and also maybe what type of Bluray player you use-- is it a multi zone player, as I am an Australian and Criterion is out of my zone - i use a cheap Laser brand player but it is not 4k
