democracynow.org - Corporations have created a new kind of marketplace out of our private human experiences. That is the conclusion of an explosive new book that argues big tech platforms like Facebook and Google are elephant poachers, and our personal data is ivory tusks. We continue our interview with Shoshana Zuboff, author of The Age of Surveillance Capitalism: The Fight for a Human Future at the New Frontier of Power.
Democracy Now! is an independent global news hour that airs weekdays on nearly 1,400 TV and radio stations Monday through Friday. Watch our livestream 8-9AM ET: democracynow.org

unfortunately it probably wouldn't have made a difference whether it was anyone else either. The same issue with 'net neutrality'...it is boring and no one(hardly anyone) wanted to know about it. @onlyfacts "The rules championed by Democratic former President Barack Obama, intended to safeguard equal access to content on the internet, were opposed by President Donald Trump, a Republican."

Yes, this is one reason the Obama and Clinton campaigns were so close to Google. And interestingly (and to everyone's detriment) their social conditioning based on identity politics didn't ultimately work. While ending up with Trump was disastrous, the neoliberals are their own brand of terrible.

We happily and blindly gave them all the information at no cost. Our very souls. They then made endless amounts of money, which naturally grants them power and influence. But in the end, I think even money will be replaced as the thing that buys power, by knowledge itself. Knowledge about everyone, in every way, from the most trivial to the most private. We're nothing anymore. We're powerless and there's no place left to run. We're fucked.

The moral shift caused by the expanding “oneness movement” in the workplace strips away all autonomous privacy, so why not do it to the clients as well? An imbalance of psychic ability combined with a lack of oversight results in abuse. Zimbardo proved the consequence of such a power imbalance years ago with the Stanford Prison experiment. All this is done under the banners of “nothing to fear if you’ve nothing to hide”, corporate espionage has promoted these values...to save money. It’s often normalized with the slogan that “we’re all hypocrites “...we’re not. Permission is everything where intimacy is concerned

The political and socio-political ambition isn't great enough to be effective. Clearly the New Deal didn't tame capitalism, it didn't create equilibrium, and there is no such thing as "market democracy", because the New Deal was utterly destroyed as a policy framework and as a political concensus, and was only somewhat intact for about 20 years. The period without the New Deal in effect has exceeded the the New Deal already by 200%. Aiming at "doing it again" promises only another short lacuna in the normal tendencies of capitalism towards monopolisation, financialisation, rentierism and neo-feudalism. In any case, so deep and wide is the neo-liberal legal and institutional apparatus, including things like the WTO, the EU, and every major international trade agreement of the last 30 years, that it would take at least a decade to dismantle and replace, in which time the political power of the financial and real estate elites would be reorganised to derail our efforts, as the original New Deal was derailed by the recovery and remobilisation of bourgeois political forces, working through economics departments, the alphabet agencies and privately funded lobbies, the media and civil society organisations. Given the historical scorecard, we have to conclude that social democracy, including this particular deployment of that old Third Way canard, the "social market" as "market democracy" is a massive historical failure and in significant part the thin end of the wedge of neoliberalism, with liberals and social democrats accepting the drift into neoliberalism as electoral realpolitik and sensible middle class dinnerparty policy chat, predicated on incrementalism and unquestioning belief in markets and the leading role of private enterprise. To overcome "surveillance capitalism" you also have to overcome capitalism in general, and that has to mean wholesale expropriation of the superrich and monoply corporations, such as Google and Facebook, and wholesale redistribution of the ownership of that wealth to communities and civil society associations such as unions, cities, states and co-operatives, to provide the necessary democratic control within the enterprise by the community and community groups. Otherwise, the wealthy will just use their massive (and unearned) wealth to organise against your legislative, regulatory temporary fixes and to buy off, co-opt and dismantle your establishment-politics-adjunct political organisation. It's not just a matter of money-in-politics, it's money in the wrong pocket books, and that has to be changed or the rest cannot be, and not for any historically meaningful and effective length of time.

"Naming has power." Yes! Yes! Yes! Like Adam the Namer and my ancestress Leah the Namer (who perhaps named 15 children since Rabbinic tradition holds that all the sons of Yakov were twins). All words are symbols and symbols have millennial or cosmic epochal history and energy dynamics. The first step to understanding ideas and concepts is knowing the names and words associated therewith and perhaps chanting the names and words in a particularly noetic symantic family. And then swimming around in the ocean of meaning in those verbal placeholders. Shabbat Shalom.

I'm inclined to agree. One may say that the essential feature of all these "Capitalisms" is parasitism. "Surveillance Capitalism" is an initially intriguing concept, but it is just another example of a form of social parasitism. But isn't it also true that Industrial Capitalism actually did generate useful commodities and represent some form of 'progress,' even if it was based on expropriated labor? So isn't that (at least) a relative distinction?

This is what happens when capitalism is given free reign. Survival of the financially fittest, while any act which provides advantage for the wealthy over those less able to afford a defense of their privacy and opportunity to thrive are sacrificed. Capitalism must always be balanced with humanism! An individual's right to access resources should not be at the cost of another individuals access to the basic necessities of food, clothing, shelter, healthcare, a competitive education, and the opportunity to pursue a personally meaningful career while supporting themselves and their loved ones.

That's a small start but it is self censorship as Shoshona Zuboff mentioned. You don't mention whether you use any apps or not. See the other DN post on women's menstrual cycle being tracked. That is serious invasion of privacy that few will explicitly know they have permitted that information to be shared. "Today's opinions are a tomorrow's legislation", it is a much deeper awareness of what is going on and the legislation that needs to catch up if we are going to tackle the information and power asymmetry to reclaim individual sovereignty and hence democracy. I think reading the book that Shoshona Zuboff has written and understand the situation ie weave opinions with knowledge.

But if you want to get more granular, it's the moments you paused the video, it's the video you watched after this one, it's the location of the Wifi router you accessed the video from.... and on.... forever EVERYTHING.... you do online is being extracted, and put into a database, so at some point in the future, your digital interactions will form part of a algorithm that some company will use to target you and attempt to predict and intervene in your future behaviour..... What a brilliant woman. The only thing Shoshana Zuboff got wrong was when she said, 05:18 "It's our job as citizens of democratic societies to use our new understanding to summon the resources of our democratic institutions". It's interesting and ironic she can make this statement when all she has to do is open her eyes and look. The most prolific sight is people coupled to their “smart” phones for their Potemkin existence; it is their source of human relationships; it is their source of opinion and especially “news”. So you first have to extract these fools from their cell phones before real democracy can start. And as for democracy itself; democracy doesn't exist in the US; it has died from the death of a thousand cuts. Everything from the Plutocratic control the mainstream media and all branches of government, the Electoral College, Superdelegates, the corporatization of the DNC and RNC and the Commission on Presidential Debates, voter restriction, questionable electric voting practices, gerrymandering, Institutions like Cambridge Analytica, and so much more have disabled democracy and now these puppet masters can predict, not only their own economic future but the dystopian political future for all. It’s as if they were using Orwell’s 1984 as a strategic guide to their oppression and control. www.vanityfair.com/news/2018/03/zuckerberg-embarks-on-apology-tour "People just submitted it. "Do we want to be living in a society that makes its money by trading in human futures?" She then says, "Because the consequence of that kind of business logic is in a direct collision course with democracy ... it must cast human autonomy as its enemy." She goes on to say that human autonomy has to do with our decision rights. If democracy is understood by a system of government where the people rule: "A democracy means rule by the people in which the citizens of that society freely elect their political representatives." It doesn't say special interest groups, lobbyists, corporate media, etc. So, democracy is used for different forms of government, where the people can take part in the decisions that affect the way their country, state or community is run. Are we living in a democracy? That "human autonomy" she talks about, as I see it, seems to be in the hands of the few and the big corporations, openly exercising their form of "surveillance capitalism" in which a few strokes of the keyboard and some personal codes will expose our entire life to whoever is willing to purchase the information. But don't worry, our personal information is always "safe."

While some of this matter is new to me and others, I am sure. But largely this is not truelly revolutionary new info. But I do thank this women for talking about it on Democracy Now. As it is truelly naferious and scary. But her last comments about electing new people who will do the right thing to correct this. Is pattenly WRONG. In this interview the point is made that the tech company, if they do not like what they see. Can, do, and will bribe and write favourable legislation or back and appiont candidates who will do their bidding. Using the very behavioral capitalism model to get their people in. And all of my latter comments points to the fundamental flaw in her hopeful fantasy. How does a just and equal system rise from a ultra stacked and rigged GAME?

If anything, she's articulated the problem very well - enough to draw a line in the sand. However, the responsibility is ours to name it and tame it, with or without legislation. Let's resist anyone who datamines and exploits our personal lives and interactions (says the dude posting to you on KZbin...lol).

It's Capital, protecting its class interest. Shoshana Zuboff, although her heart is in the right place, is just another complaining Liberal, failing to see that it's the system, and clinging to any sort of hope that the system will sustain itself.

Democracy is not that important , capitalism on the other hand is critical for poverty elevation ...... in India democracy does MORE harm than good , there is endless politics and debate but zero development action. Our country is still a slum because of Democracy , if we would have embraced capitalism propery things would be much different.
