Even as the Cowboys are terrible now, there was a time when they were actually good, but here is what began the dynasty that day. The Cowboys at 6-5 against the 11-0 Redskins at RFK. The Cowboys need to win out to guarantee a wildcard spot. The Cowboys had to throw everything and the kitchen sink to win. The onside kick, the hailmary that succeeded. The thing Ken Willis almost blew the game with his missed field goals. Still, what made the Cowboys different from the previous team is that Jimmy Johnson actually got a good backup QB. The year before the Cowboys were 7-7 and had to win one game to make the playoffs. Aikman got hurt against the Eagles which the team the lost. Then with a terrible back up in Babe Lauffenberg, the Cowboys got blown out by a bad Falcon team. Now Jimmy went out and got Steve Beuerlein as the back up. You saw how he performed here and after the win, the Cowboys would win Thanksgiving against the Steelers and go 11-5 after the regular season. The Redskins on the other hand bounced back the next week winning the division in Anaheim against the Rams. Then winning home field advantage against the Cardinals in Tempe. The Redskins would go 14-2 and cruise through the playoffs right into the Super Bowl. The Cowboys would win a wildcard game with Beuerlein at QB, but would lose against the Lions in the divisional round. The Redskins easily crushed the Bills 37-24 and it was 37 to 10 until the Bills had 2 garbage time touchdowns. The next year the Cowboys drafted well and got Thomas Everett the safety in free agency and the final piece in Charles Haley at defensive. The rest is history. THIS is where the Cowboys dynasty started that day.
