I've seen a compound turbo 2jz that was pushin' 3000 HP @140 psi boost on methanol. Plus compound set ups not only nearly eliminate lag but they also spin at approximately half the rpm of a regular turbo @ around 80,000 rpm. Thus reducing heat as well. 🐛💩💯👟🥸🎃👃

Ben Thomspon has been a name in the GenVibe community forever, super glad that his car is the one to shed light on the community. There's a few really cool builds in the group, and his is one of the best. The Vibes are a fantastic practical car, and for a basic early 2000s hatch, they've aged quite well in my opinion. Be extra careful with the 2zz-ge especially turbocharged, always let it get to operating temp. The valve lift solenoid had a screen that plugs up and detonates the motor.
@arcanevoid9199
@arcanevoid9199 Жыл бұрын
i mean it goes for any engine, 2zz is just more vulnerable to it because its aluminum with no sleeves. and idk where you heard that about the screen filter, if it clogs lift will just not work properly
@Grg5132
@Grg5132 10 ай бұрын
be careful with pushing random false myths, the lift screens don't have a weakness, the only thing oil wise is starvation past 1.5 sustained lateral G's. like most stock cars have. Running up the RPMs on a cold engine isn't good for any motor, but for the 2ZZ it can damage the MMC liners if they aren't up to temp. 2ZZ's max out at like 700hp from what we've seen in testing. stock MMC liners handle around 320-340 depending on how in tact the liners are in.
@Mikegastaldo

@@Mikegastaldo not downshifting, money shifting, stock can handle 8,500 rpm, which is nothing to scoff at, unless you're a dumbass kid and put it into 2nd instead of 4th banging gears and bye bye oil pump or valves. Don't know why you're trying to claim money shifting is a 2ZZ only thing...

I bought an 03 GT for $700 a few years back. I daily it, and carry 2 bikes on a hitch rack. It gets 36mpg, and all I've done is replace a wheel bearing over the 40k miles I've owned it. It's now at 180k miles, and loves to hit lift cruising thru mountain roads. Honestly, I bought it as a beater to hold me over for a few months. It will not die, even when I use it to haul 10ft pieces of lumber or conduit from home Depot (that back glass pops open and passenger seat folds flat).

What was really insane was Toyota’s Matrix had its own TRD catalog. You could get intakes, suspension, exhaust, short shifters, etc. all from your Toyota dealership. For the 1ZZ engines, you could even get a TRD roots supercharger that wouldn’t void the warranty. It was insane. My mom bought an 03 Matrix XR new. Eventually, I owned it for a few years. So glad this video was made, 2zzge's need more exposure to the world, i feel like that's a small reason as to why the aftermarket parts market for 2zz heads isn't a wide variety. and just for clarity, only the 1st gen vibe gt and 1st gen matrix xrs's had the 2zz. and only the xrs and gt trims, everything else had a 1zzfe. had no clue what a 2zzge was up until i got an 03 matrix xrs and if i had to choose what car i'd keep for a lifetime over the other, would definitely be my xrs over my 9th gen si, anyday. hitting lift in a 2zz and cracking vtec is two completely different feelings, and i've driven 8th gen si's and b series vtec swapped eg's. still would pick the 2zz. thanks for the vid!

Turbokits make great kits for the money. Very good stuff came from them. The Aem Fic isn’t the best ecu for the tuning setup, but it gets the job done. Only problem with the ecu it’s hard to tune it for close loop part throttle boost. It’s a piggyback ecu so it’s always fighting the factory ecu to do boost things. It works great for full throttle tuning because the ecu goes open loop while doing a full throttle pull.

Ive had my 04 2.4 coupe for five years now and Ill never get rid of it. they handle really good for a commuter car with little bolt ons. just some food for thought. Same vibes (no pun intended) as the acura TL you reviewed not too long ago.

Might get lost in the comments but the 2zz is such a cool engine. It was manufactured by Yamaha, put in to a TON of good vehicles. The Celica GTS even offered a supercharger FROM FACTORY for it. Super rare but if you ever see a TRD supercharger on these, they're one of the lucky ones

I had the Corolla XRS with the same engine. Love the duel personality and how great it sounds as it approaches the 8200 rpm redline. Toyota out vteched Honda with this one. I only wished it didn't fall out of the high lift cam between shifts and had a lsd.

Everything you mentioned about the mechanical drive now has me on the prowl for one of these. Also, the owner really needs to get it fully tuned, the vvt-i imo should be tuned for the WOT 2860 pre on-ramp for that full intake surge and take off to stock rpm limit lmao.

Its not vvti, its vvtli, its lift just like vtec, it isnt something you can easily tune but it can be done, its got two different set of cam profiles, intake and exhaust, it has a low profile and a higher cam profile, giving more power to the car and opening more the valves! Its insane even stock!

That's an epic build. I have a 2003 Toyota Matrix with a TRD supercharger on a 1ZZ engine. Eventually going to do an AWD 5-speed swap and twin charge the engine (add a turbo) after a full build. I'm shooting for north of 450 all wheel horsepower. Should be thoroughly insane. Thank you for posting this because this platform doesn't get the love it deserves.

@Elijah Drapeau Yes, the E154F transmission out of a Celica GT4 or Alltrac will work with an adapter plate. Shift linkages are the same and will add an upgraded clutch. As for the rest of it, custom axles and prop shaft. The Matrix and Vibe came in an AWD configuration so parts for the rear subframe and gas tank are obtainable. That just leaves a custom exhaust to be fabbed up, which is the least difficult of things to do. It's going to be a long build because I have bills to pay, but it will be done. I would definitely create a step by step video of how I did it. No use in keeping it a secret because anyone who puts their mind to it can make it happen.

@Elijah Drapeau Oh yeah, I've always said Toyotas are like Legos. You can just about put anything together. Hey that's the beautiful thing about modifying a car though, you make it what you want it to be. Build it how you want, that's what makes all builds unique, would love to see yours someday. Who in this comment thread is in Pennsylvania?

@@cujoman187 I still have the car and it still runs and drives. Unfortunately, I keep landing crappy jobs that don't pay very much. Word to the wise, don't come to Pennsylvania for work. Everything here sucks unless you're into wearhouse work. So, I'm still saving for it still and slowly hoarding parts. Eventually I'm going to build it.

Reminds me of my Banshee quad the way you describe it. Not much down low and will cruise just fine but once it hits those upper revs the switch flips. It just breaks the tires loose and roars with all power hitting hard at once. It does not come in smooth at the high RPM either. Gives you all the power then and there rather you want it all or not. Really a strong thrust of forward momentum like hitting boost on a big turbo car or nitrous.

It's good to see something different & unexpected. Fun fact about Toyota brass attitude about the NUMMI plant and all that. My dad worked with a lot of corporate heads, so this comes straight from one of their top guys. A group had come from Japan and my dad met with them in California. One guy noticed my dad's Toyota and asked ," Japanese made?" My dad, not sure, said "I don't know, it's a Toyota." The man asked if he could look, dad said," Sure" and the man opened the driver's door and confirmed it was, in fact, made in Japan. He told my dad the news and proceeded to tell him that the NUMMI plant and other US plants had more issues than any in Japan & they found the workers in California "Meh" in diplomatic terms (he was much, much more direct and "To the bone")
