What's the difference? The TVR / TWR Story

A few weeks ago I was driving along the motorway in Britain and saw a van with TVR on the side of it might have been TWR, and it went by so quickly that I missed it, but it got me thinking about both TVR and TWR, and you’ve asked for videos about both of these car companies in the past so I thought it might be fun to a mashup where I go through the histories of both TVR and TWR together, sort of chronologically. So, let's find out together where TVR got its name, what the heck happened with the Russian investment in the 2000s and what happened to TWR.

TWR's Australian operation was brought by Holden, but the same entity was later brought back by the family, now known as the Walkinshaw Group. It has a large factory at Clayton, Victoria employing 700 people converting cars(mostly pickups) and running motor racing teams in Australia and Europe. Tom Walkinshaw's sons run the company today.

I LOVED those Clarkson vids! I had them on VHS haha! I already loved TVR cars but that race that Clarkson set up (its on KZbin too) made the TVR Cerbera my dream car, it utterly destroyed all competition! The only car to come close was a Porsche 911 Turbo but even that was miles behind. Clarkson can be a bit of a twat but he always loved TVR and for that i have to respect him.

Being an American, never having been overseas, and having only seen 2 TVR's- a Cerbera at a Car Show- and a Vixen 2 (which I did get to ride along in!!) I can only say that I sincerely hope to see a lot more of them on the road, and hopefully locate and buy a Sagaris one day! I was in the engine shop at TWR back in 1985 building the Jaguar XJR-6 Group C engine. quite a culture shock after finishing an apprenticeship at a Triumph Stag specialist. I had the rare privilege to not only drive a road going Group A Rover SD1 Vitesse with next seasons twin plenum race engine in it but also Toms own heavily modified XJS 6.1. Tom and TWR were repsonsible for so much in top level motorsport and prestige motor cars. The Metro 6R4 engine was developed there (a later form going on to replace the V12 Jaguar engine in the XJ220); under the skin the XJ8/DB7 was evolved by TWR from the XJS; the so called 'Dream Team' in F1 who ultimately ended up at Ferrari with Michael Schumacher was formed by Walkinshaw during his Benetton and Arrows time; the Arrows A23 in its various incarnations became one of the longest running chassis in modern F1 history. the big lesson from my time there was "its not how good you are, its how good you cheat"

A team up between these two in the 90s would have been mental. The Cerebera would have probably made it to le mans in some form, arrows might have had something better than the Yamaha and Hart lumps in the back of the car (no disrespect to Brian Hart, Gary Anderson said he's a lovely and talented man but the engines in the arrows cars weren't great) and with Peter Wheelers dog around they would have been able to bounce back from losing John Barnard as a designer. A TVR GT squad run by people who know more than a bunch of blokes who love speed would have boosted sales and having a tangible product would have given TWR a boost as well. Don't know how the prost situation would have gone down in this alternate timeline though since that was a moneypit no matter what

A great video and appreciate the PSA at the end. On a side note; one big nail in the TVR coffin (remember, it's not the cough that carries you off, it's the coffin they carry you off in) was the 1999 introduction of the Porsche Boxster. More capable, safer, and with the Porsche shield as its agent, the Boxster cast a spotlight on the exceedingly crude nature of the contemporary TVR Griffith, Chimaera, and Cerbera.

Thank you for your blood pressure PSA. I went to the doctor some time back with headaches and a loud whooshing sound in my ears. The doctor informed me that I was in hypertensive crisis and had the highest blood pressure he’d ever seen. After much medication and lifestyle changes it had come down but too late unfortunately. I have since experienced the unfortunate situation of having a major artery start an internal dissection, the most common cause of which is prolonged high blood pressure. Please people, don’t ignore it, it will come back to bite you in the arse… actually, that’d be less painful than an artery dissection.

Couldn't agree more about checking your Blood pressure, a few years ago after a routine medical at work I found out I had Hypertension, at 150/110 I was advised to see my doctor, I felt no symptoms feeling completely fine and normal (that's the danger of high blood pressure), at 39 non smoker minimal alcohol consumption, relatively fit and active with no pre-existing conditions and no history of it in my family I was completely shocked, I put it down in part at least to my relentless and unforgiving shift pattern at work, Medication, a few life style changes and a little tweak to my shift work has it under control. Great video BTW 👍 I used to work on a TVR 280i in my motor trade days.

The cars made under his ownership were mostly simply brilliant. I'm amazed he's not name checked! And the most powerful and fastest TVR was the Speed 12, one of which (W112BHG) was road going. I chased it up a runway in my Chimaera and almost got out at 120mph because it was going away so fast, I thought I must have stopped.

The TWR story about what happened to the XJR-14 (Mazda, Porsche) and the XJR-15 (Nissan) I had never heard before, amazing! Where I was in 2021 to get the Jab you had to have your blood pressure tested along with other routine things. The only other time I'd heard of TWR was when the company produced an inconclusive copy of the Clio V6 phase 1 chassis. Glad to know a little more.

TWR assembled all the Clio v6 phase 1 cars, in the same Swedish factory as the Volvo C70. Production was moved to the RenaultSport (and now Alpine) factory in Dieppe with the intorduction of the phase 2 cars, although the development from phase 1 to phase 2 was still by TWR.

I had a job interview at the now empty Leafield Technical Center for TWR Arrows at the end of 1996. I couldnt believe my luck when Mr Walkingshaw him self walked out into the reception area (passed the jag v12 engine on display) with a hand outstretched.....only to great the Japanese businessman sitting next to me lol

@19:19. One thing I agree with is that some things you have on a car DO increase driver overconfidence, although they are still necessities. Traction control and ABS being the most important ones. Cruise control is another. Never fails to make me laugh when I hear people say, "I can get better mileage than the cruise control". Possibly you can but certainly not under apples to apple conditions.

I often had a severe headache, never cared for that, some pills it was gone, so what. Then, upon an upcoming small operation on my skin I was checked - and blood pressure was way too high. Since I was „adjusted“ to 130/80 all is fine, never had a headache since. So, yes, you‘re spot on, go and check.

What's the inexpensive tablets you had to control your BP? Was it off the shelf medication or prescribed? Good video BTW, always wondered what happened to TWR but never really bothered to search online. Also had no idea they owned Arrows F1

I owned a Mk1 Volvo C70 T5 coupe which was a joint venture between Volvo and TWR with TWR helping to engineer the suspension. It was the best handling car I've ever owned despite weighing as much as an elephant.

Hey mate. My grandad has 2 TWR cars in Aus but they aren’t Holdens. A Jaguar XJR-S celebration edition (No. 77/100 for those interested) and a normal XJR-S non facelift. Ill continue the tradition and get myself a HSV Malloo one day.

My old boss had a purple cerbera around 1998 - a total, OTT design tour de force but spent more time on the back of a trailer back to the Edinburgh dealer than on the road.

As a kid I saw a TVR Tuscan Speed Six in Looney Tunes: Back in Action. I loved that movie even though it was incredibly campy, but ever since then I've wanted to own a Tuscan. The Speed Six engine honestly has the best sound of any engine I've ever come across!
