Big Cartel and TaxJar cover tax basics

I live in Florida and I’m thinking about dropshipping on Big Cartel. What I would like to know is if Big Cartel collects and remits sales tax for sellers, does that mean I don’t have to apply for sales tax permit to sell online?

Hey Melinda! That's a great question and we're happy to help clarify! Essentially, once we've remitted (paid) those taxes on your behalf you will not need to pay those taxes again - they've already been taken care of. However, depending on what state you're in, you may need to report your sales and the tax paid on those sales. If you’re unsure what your responsibilities may be, we encourage you to consult an accountant or other tax specialists. Hey Cynthia! We provide the ability to add tax codes to products if a particular item receives some sort of tax exemption. So if the item isn't eligible for any exemptions, leaving the tax code field blank will apply the default, fully taxable amount to the order total during checkout. Hope that clarifies things for you! Hi there! That depends on your state's requirements. State requirements vary when it comes to reporting, so you may still need to report the sales tax but you won't have to pay it if we've already remitted it. Hi i live in Ireland and I plan to start an online business on big cartel. I’m 17 and have my parents consent but I wanted to ask do I have to pay for tax/VAT or does the buyer? I have no idea how tax would work here and I’m afraid once I start getting orders I’ll have no idea what to do. Do you start paying tax after you earn a certain amount or when you start your business? Is sales tax the same as VAT?

@@stitchedfern7492 yes. When you do your sales tax you need to submit your total big cartel sales then on the “deductions” line add “big cartel” and total amount of taxes they remitted. After that it should bring what you owe to zero.

You have to pay taxes - there's no way around that. With our tax feature, we collect and remit taxes on your behalf, so in that way we take care of things, but ultimately you're still paying taxes. By default your products are assigned a retail tax code, and that should work for most products. If you're not sure about that your best bet would be to reach out to a local tax professional, and provide them with a link to the available tax codes: help.bigcartel.com/tax-codes A local tax professional will be well versed in your state's sales tax laws, and they'd be able to let you know which tax code to use-- they'd also be able to let you know if the default retail code is sufficient.
