I drive this every day going to work. I saw a couple girls out there a few times that were 16 **at most**. A few weeks ago when I stopped to get coffee at Starbucks, there was a cop sitting there. So I asked him why they don’t do something at least about the minors that are doing it. He just shook his head, looked away, and didn’t say anything. Then he looked at me and said they are *specifically* instructed not to do so. I asked him who instructed them not to. His exact words were “those who give us our orders“. I then asked him if that order was originating from local(city/county) superiors; or from a larger entity(state/federal). He said it was coming from the latter. I could tell it was eating him up. I still can’t believe what our country is becoming.

Mix in a long and sordid history of Aurora Ave. Going back to the Transcontinental Railroad ending in Tacoma and logging towns popping up left and right. Prostitution has been heavy in Seattle going back into at least the 1880’s Madame Lou was a major hustler. Setting up her own brothel in Pioneer Square, hers was lavish compared to the rundown “lady of the night” shanties where you’re likely to get stabbed. Hers was one of the first post-Great Seattle Fire. She took care of her girls and also took in children and was popular with the elites. She also held a lot of land. The history of prostitution in Seattle is super interesting.

Never had much conversation with people who spend a lot of time on the streets. Tryina imagine what makes folks live this way, with so many dangers, discomforts, potential for violence, dealing with police and the courts... If you have a criminal record, that can be a hurdle for a lot of jobs. I have known people who really hated being told what to do, keeping a schedule, working 9 to 5...

What I don't understand is if prostitution is illegal why are the women able to get customers in the open. Wouldn't the police arrest them?
