Re-distilling Jägermeister to see what happens (Ralfy review link in description)

Following on from the experimental whisky distillation, I thought it would be interesting to re-distill a bottle of Jagermeister through my water distiller to see what came out.
The still I used is a water distiller that is absolutely not intended for fancy distillation of spirits. It does a very rough all-or-nothing pass of the contents. I normally use it for distilling water to use in fog fluids and for low residue PCB cleaning. It's a Megahome water distiller from eBay.
Here's my brother Ralfy's video where he tastes the results:-

This also keeps the channel independent of KZbin's advertising algorithms allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty.

@@hypnotoad28 Not 100% sure, no. I haven't looked at the caption options when uploading, I've just been assuming the ones that are displayed per-word are generated and the ones that display line-by-line are added and timed by the creator. The word-by-word subtitles seem to always have the phonetically-similar mistakes that voice-to-text is notorious for making. That said, maybe KZbin offers a middle ground option where you provide the raw transcript text and let KZbin do the timing automatically. Now I'm curious and going to have to check, heh.

In the early 80's, when I was about 12 years old, my grandmother moved into a nursing home and had about 40 gallons of various home made wines that were no longer fit for drinking. We (my parents and me a quick learner) ran the wine through a water distiller similar to what you use. We would add about a half gallon of water to a gallon of wine in the distiller. The alcohol floats to the top and evaporates first, after trial and error, we figured out approximately how much "mostly" alcohol we would get from a gallon of wine and half gallon of water. To test, we would take a tablespoon of the distilled liquid coming out of the distiller, if it lit on fire, we knew we were getting "mostly" alcohol, if the liquid would no longer ignite, we knew we were only getting mostly water. At this point we would stop the distiller and discard what was remaining. There was always some water left in the spoon after we lit it and the alcohol burned off, so it was not 100% alcohol, but still very high. There really wasn't much of a flavor left in the finished product, one could not tell what kind of wine had been run through the distiller.

This is intriguing. I'm not a fan of sweet drinks like Jagermeister, so this could be a fun way to make them less sickly. And then whether Gin+de-syruped Jagermeister would make a fun variation on a martini. It's probably easier for me to find than a decent dry vermouth.

@@fredbloggs5902 This is correct, but what is in the early distillate which tastes sweet? If I didn't know that there is a cocktail of ketones et al, which are not good for you, I would enjoy the first shots, because they are sweet and full of flavours.

@@RobertSeviour1 The early distillate supposedly has more methanol (if any is present) because it has a lower boiling point. Ethylene glycol is sweet but boils around 200 so it isn’t that, as you say it’s probably a cocktail of various esters and ketones.

Near where I live is a homeless man who sits on a bench often clutching spirits and gurning at everyone who walks past whilst making various grunting noises. I see you employed him for your thumbnail. A very charitable act I must say.

One suggestion, if I may, is that the most efficient way of mixing solutions is by inverting the bottle upside down as it is the air bubble that mixes the solution. Shaking it sideways is counterproductive as it doesn't lead to the liquid moving a lot.
