@@davidnevillemusic I mean, it's not the entire theme, but the orchestration and theme the brass is playing is similar to the Quidditch-like section and the orchestration and themes that everyone is playing is similar in the Across the Stars-like section. There's no denying there's similarities. John Williams has his own style and it's interesting to note when he does the same sort of things in different scores. It's not plagiarism obviously, he wrote all the scores.
@davidnevillemusic6 жыл бұрын
I guess I just don’t really hear them being all that similar, it is interesting though! I personally think that there are many more compelling examples of Williams using elements of past scores than this one. Ya know? I can hear it in the quidditch one to an extent but I don’t really hear the Across the Stars. Interesting to say the least!

Good stuff! The detail in this piece is exhaustive. I first ever heard it when I listened to the 'Williams on Williams' album, and somehow the three bars of trombone at 1:18 always stuck with me the most. John Williams in my favourite neo-romantic swashbuckling mode - Korngold would have been proud.

First heard this in 1995 when this version was on the Williams on Williams soundtrack. Bits if this piece appear in the film, but those pieces were taken from the film and expounded upon. I've been massively in love with piece ever since. Not a day goes by where I don't him the whole thing. The score of the film is full of gorgeous moments, but this, created AFTER the film was released is by far my favorite.

The section that starts at 2:39 has always been my favorite. You have the swirling woodwinds, and the quiet, accenting low brass and timpani. Then at 4:09, love those woodwinds and piccolo glissandos!

This piece combines two different parts of the original soundtrack album. From 0:00 to about 0:20 is the Overture, Track 1. From 0:20 to 0:25 is transitional and not found in the original soundtrack recording. The main part from 0:25 to 2:37 is from the latter portion of Track 13 where Peter regains his memory & former glory and rockets out of the Never Tree. From 2:37 on sounds like it's from the End Credits of the film but the ending of this piece is quite different from what's on the CD I have (yes, I know, CDs are old AF, and this one was released about the same time as the film itself).

I love your score reductions! I keep coming back over and over again! :) I would love to see instruments in orchestral order however even though they are reduced, it is still very helpful and easier to follow. Otherwise my eyes keep wondering to see what's playing. I am learning a lot otherwise and I appreciate the time spent! Definitely one of my favorite spots to hang out on YouTiube!

I almost forgot to post an important message; your analyze of Theme B IS wrong. It is neither D-flat major nor D-flat lydian. IMHO it is *A-flat major and the chord is *subdominant*, not tonic. I see John is casting a spell on our ears by repeating tonic and subdominant to stir tonality while keeping its whole tonality. In other words, the left hand sings in D-flat major while the right hand (melody!) does in A-flat major.

Study the music of Richard Wagner, Richard Strauss and Korngold. Simply acquainting one's self with Le Sacre du Printemps (the bible of modern orchestration) will furnish every possible orchestrational phenomenon you'll need to know. Also look at Ravel and Debussy. But most importantly, start with a simple theme; let it germinate in your mind's ear while you spend time away from the desk or piano. Build on simple 4- and 8-bar ideas. Also, Prokofiev's ballets and 5th Symphony seem to have had some influence on Williams' approach to melody and good woodwind writing. But as John Williams has said many times, his genius is that conventional relationship between inspiration and perspiration. He's very explicit about the fact that masters like Strauss are the REAL geniuses, the sine qua non of HIS voice and his success.
