​@@OttophilWell, John's music has touched several generations, if you've never watched Harry Potter you obviously won't recognize it as his other themes, he played a big part on the success of the first 3 movies (3rd movie score is a masterpiece), so I say that's enough reason to watch it, as well as the presence of great british actors like Alan Rickman or Maggie Smith (my Great Uncle is 72 and is getting into it, he loves Star Wars and Jaws btw). I know it's considered iconic at this point, and I am a huge fan of Williams' work in general. But I remember seeing the first Potter film in the theater and thinking the Hedwig theme sounded like a cartoony American impression of how a magical British world should sound. Like, a creepy music box tune? It just seems a little on-the-nose. (Also, note that he wrote it without reading the books.) Anyway, the tune has grown on me (I'm not a jaded teenager anymore) but it still think it's ham-fisted compared to Williams' other classics. Later directors used the theme more sparingly and went with simpler, less Hollywood-sounding arrangements, which I think helped.

I met John Williams once in LA at an LA Phil concert when he was walking around at the intermission. He was surrounded by a bunch of musicians from Venezuela that were there to see the concert as it was a collaboration with the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra. I was dying of panic to come forward to him but this is the guy who wrote the Superman theme. How could I not? I realized then that he was with his daughter and I made my way towards them and said: maestro, I don't mean to bother you, but I just need to say that you wrote the soundtrack of my childhood. Every time I hear the Superman theme, I turn 8. I wanna thank you for that. He then looked at me and with a kindness I cannot even describe, he held my hand with both his hands and said in a santa like voice while sincerely looking at me in the eyes: oh you're such a kind young man! Thank you for your words! His daughter, also super kind, said: would you like me to take a picture of you two? You bet I said yes. They thanked me again and went about their day. It is one of my life's greatest moments and one who taught me, no matter how big, kindness always goes first.

Well, he's definitely brilliant, but is he a genius, or is his work derivative of other famous composers and compositions? I'd wondered if he'd done a western and found he did _The Cowboys_ and before that _Wagon Train._ However, the former isn't as distinctive as Ennio Morricone's compositions for the Clint Eastwood movies _A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More,_ and _The Good, the Bad and the Ugly._ Instead it seems based on a piece by Aaron Copland. Also, Morricone brings in other sounds from other instruments including electric guitar, while I think Williams sticks to traditional instruments of the orchestra.

And then John would write his own version based on that theme yes but there were many other themes that came on their own way.

This man can bring fandoms together, I went to film concerts where they played his themes, amounts of Harry Potter and Star Wars fans (including me), when I watched Harry Potter, I was already into Star Wars, Indiana Jones, E. Today I am a music major, and we performed some music from "Home Alone" last Christmas with our Symphony orchestra! @@Moodboard39 I think you misunderstand my comment, I am not saying that people watch music for the music, but that it is John Williams's music that makes many of these films memorable and keeps them in our hearts and minds. The plot of Star Wars is a basic hero's journey, (and draws a huge amount of inspiration from Dune) but the score makes it stand out as something unique and memorable. People may watch films for the story, but they remember them because of the music.

There are no words sufficient to describe the effect John Williams' music has had on the world. Easily my favorite musician and composer. He's done as much for the Leitmotif as Wagner. I can't see how he's not talked about in 300 years.

Recently re-watched JFK by Oliver Stone. Such a mesmerizing score to this day that is not talked about enough.

I worked at the commissary at Disney corporate headquarters from 2016-2020. Basically the studio cafeteria. Every Disney employee from CEO Bob Iger to landscaping Mike came in. Countless famous actors, but no one made the entire commissary stop like when John Williams was there. Disney executives who make 6-7 figures in salary would whisper “that’s John Williams over there at the salad bar!”

This guy has made the most iconic film score music across multiple generations and he’s just the kind elderly man next door. So cool. There are evenings when I get home from work and just listen to his music. There are certainly other outstanding composers in his field, but in my eyes, he’s simply the best.

He's great. I love his scores. But come on, he can't compare to the actual great composers like Stravinsky, Mahler, Ravel, Barber, etc. (JW borrows liberally from these composers btw)

@@DanFlashes99 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven are far better.... Composers John Williams is one of the best composers of the 21st century . Also Hans Zimmer is great but he uses too same sounding in some of his themes. but none of them, even the composer you mention , has nothing on Ludwig Beethoven , who would inspire Mozart. Ludwig Beethoven is considered to be one of the best music composers of all time.

@@ir8freeoh horner was special (may he rest in peace) and the rest are great, i just heard zimmer's score throughout Dune, Shore went iconic with LOTR but you can't become quite equal to John Williams. Trevor Rabin did Jerry Bruckheimer movie scores and i loved his music because i'm a fan of the genre he puts out and it was powerful music in those movies. Ramin Djawadi is rising the bar with movie and tv scores and his work on Person of Interest in particular was outstanding before he got to Game of Thrones popularity

Alan Menken wasn't as monumental as Hans Zimmer, James Horner, Howard Shore, etc. John and those 3 are in the top 5 film composers until 2010. Alan would be in the top 10.

I flew to New York last spring, last minute, with a girl I'd just met on Bumble, just so I could finally see John Williams conduct in person. We didn't find out until we were in our seats, that Spielberg was in attendance and would be giving his dear friend a tribute, as well. Tears were shed. John is a musical genius who has elevated so much art and who has touched so many of our lives. I hope there's more music in him and I can't wait for the documentary about him that Spielberg is working on!
