Here's something I wonder, the unit icons for Chaos Marines in Dawn Of War 1 are mostly not Alpha Legion. The CSM icon is the most prevelant. They're some unknown warband, purple with gold highlights with green eyes. They resemble pre heresy Emperor's Children. I think that originally Relic didn't have Alpha Legion here, which is why they're not referenced nor portrayed very well as Alpha Legion (canon Alpha Legion don't call each others real names out, they call each other "Alpharius", nor are they hardcore worshippers of Chaos as they were the only traitor legion to not head to the Eye of Terror).

"Praetorian of Dorn" horus heresy book featured Alpha Legion having normal names and giving Alpharius name only to chosen operators. Additionally, after death of Alpharius from hands of Dorn and further events Alpha Legion was split into lots of warbands many of which have turned into these hardcore worshippers of chaos. Dow portraits AL pretty well actually, as Bale represents an over-corrupted but powerful chaos lord who is still a mere pawn of our favourite cunning sorcerer who remained sane, which is actually very fitting AL. Tartarus Alpha Legion csm operated in shadows at first, using orks to distract their foes and not bothering to fight trash enemies like imperial guard, which shows the remnants of their pre-heresy sneaky doctrine. Then they began to betray each other (SIIINDRIII) all for the leader of the warband, Sindri, to achieve his goal of ascending to the daemonhood. Fits perfectly again.

Well you forget that this game is 10 years older than any HH book. So the only thing we knew back in the days where that AL where chaos CIA/tricksters. No reference at them being half loyalists, no reference about every marine calling himself alpharius, no reference about Omegon, and Alpharius presumably died VS Gulliman, baiting the ultramarines away from the siege of terra. About war tactics: guerrilla, secrecy and wide use of cultists/corrupted guard (like in this game lore). Against Gulliman they painted their armor as Ultramarines and did some slaughter.. Of course Gulliman won anyway because of not better described "tactical genius", which we can translate as Steel-Elephant skin-thick armor plot. Also, I may be wrong but AL where also using a lot of deamons when possible. Which is not what the canon suggest right now? Or maybe I confuse them with the Night Lords.

@@Baktrianos Horus Rising was released 2006. Dawn of War was released 2004. Legion the Horus Heresy book detailing the Alpha Legion was released 2008. At most a 4 year difference. Before the HH I will agree though, that most of the lore regarding the particulars of each legion tactics were not as fleshed out. But their actions here are consistent with what the Horus Heresy established. Fucking Chaotic Tactics that make absolutely no sense on the outside. They have no standard doctrine. Their methods are inscrutable and mysterious but effective and they will use any and all means available to them to accomplish their goal.

Could be the smattering of Chaos Undivided, like what Eliphas and Abbadon follow. Would make sense as to how the hierarchy of chaos is barely holding it together since a Tzeentchian sorcerer is working with Sindri. Or it could just be more trickery on behalf of Sindri.

Sindri is from the Alpha Legion, that particular legion's doctrine is using confusion, infiltration and saboutage, also using "allies"(Tools) for their own end. he's was doing very good using the orks, the renegade guardsmen, Isardo AND the chaos lord bale as tools for his own daemonic ascension, too bad that the daemon posssesed him later on. Eliphas is now overrated and overused, it is time for Sindri return in the dawn of war series

BTW incase anyone is interested Sindri is the name of a town in Burkina Faso and there is also a town called Sindri in the Indian state of Jharkhand. Also In Norse mythology, Sindri is the name of both a character and a hall that will serve as a dwelling place for the souls of the virtuous after Ragnarök. Sindri's taking over the world.... We already have two towns named after him.

Actually he is kind of wrong, not about the betraying part that is correct, however one does learn from chaos, tactics, weapons, deamon types, and that no matter how tempting the chaos powers are, giving your soul to them always results in the same end. A easier feast for warpspawn.

The Imperial Truth is not a lie, it just needed more explaining, which of course the Emperor didn't do because in our world it's pretty obvious, in 40k a lot of the time knowing about something makes you much weaker and prone to it's temptations unless you can train your mind. The vast majority of humanity remained ignorant of chaos as a result, and so didn't fall to it. It was the vast hubris of the Primarchs, Lorgar, Horus and Magnus being the main culprits. As I said, the Imperial Truth is not a lie, research Clark's third law, any species or phenomena more advanced than the species observing it, are likely to be worshipped as gods because the second race lack the understanding. The Chaos 'gods' as 40k calls them are not gods, they are corporeal emotion and energy given form in the warp, nothing more than daemons on a far larger scale (daemons being warp predators or errant hateful emotions given form). To realise there are no gods but that which humanity makes for itself is not hubris, it is wisdom. To know that we are the masters of our own destiny and rightful rulers of the galaxy if we can but find the way is the beginning of greatness. If the Emperor had finished the gates to the Webway (terra beneath the palace being one, and it's sister gate, seen during the Horus Heresy book 'The path of Heaven'), and perhaps with those 2 key stone gates made more smaller gates after, then humanity may have had a chance, may even still have had a chance if Horus had been defeated without the Emperor's crippling. 1, Webway gates, 2, train humanity on the long road to becoming gifted and controlled spykers who can protect their thoughts and emotions, 3, dismantle any human areas of worship on conquered worlds, and erase any alien races worshipping gods (thus fuelling chaos). The Chaos 'gods' would be starved, and in time revert back to the natural energy and colour of the warp, cutting off or destroying the greater and lesser daemons, turning them back into tiny pointless pockets of emotion.

As I say for my personal story. The masses of the traitor legions forgot the events of the Heresy, both sides were ruinous and corruptive, we have merely swapped one set of chains for another. My character is a Iron Warrior that detests the warp, and chaos, not a loyalist, just sees mutation and worship as weakness, be your own master as it where.

The corruption influences, they go really deep at this point. (Shenmue's overrated. The series had the ultimate chance to end things gloriously in the more recent third installment, but noooooooooooooo.)
