advice for you is to start with the newer flat on the top first. then let the water drip in to the older ones. this way the seeds that are more mold hazard stage will have less water. this way you can also dark them out of sun in their first few days and even press them with a heavy flat on top to make the starting sprout stage yield stronger shoots
@chantellstoop79646 жыл бұрын
Hi Big Family Homestead. Try drilling more holes and making your trays flat on the rack. You have a more even wetting of the seed and the same drainage, and much better growth. Put baking soda in your presoak water to prevent mould.

You should try using cloth instead of a tray. Then you just have to set up a misting system that activates every few hours spraying water above and below the seeds. You will also get longer taller grass if you leave it out of light for about two days. Then you put it in the sun and it will grow green. Not sure how that effects the nutrition values though.

On my system, I also go dirtless. I use the seed flats you find at walmart or almost all gardening stores. I drill about 10 holes on one end of the flats. I run my water system from a 5 gal bucket. It runs for 2 min every 4 hours. I presoak my seed at least 1 hour then whenever I put it on a tray. 7 days, mine is done. Just letting you know it is not hard. P.S. I tried letting the seed soak for 12-24 hours but found that at 7 days I could tell no difference in that which soaked for 1 hour.

Love the vid! just a thought, check the PH of the water I have a feeling that running it over and over may result in pretty acidic water however there is no soil so cant be sure. also checking the ppm of the water would be interesting to see what it would increase to. Knowing both could help tell you when to change your water. Lastly you should add a link in the video or the description below of where you show the construction. Could lead to more views, I'm off to find it now.

+BringItHard Thanks for the ideas- We personally use the grass for our animals and change the water about every 4-5 days, so the PH was not a concern for us- If you (humans) were consuming it, I might give it the ole' raised eyebrow...

Hi, Really enjoy your videos. I have a question, I would like to start juicing wheatgrass as you know what grass is an acquired taste! Somewhere I read you can add a little fresh lemon juice to it before you drink it to make it more palatable. Do you know if this is correct? I not sure if it would interfere with the mechanism of action of the wheatgrass and take away some of the benefits i.e. nutrients? Thanks Again, Bob

And those that are harvest, how you use them. Show us how you make use of the wheat grass. May i also ask, when growing the wheat grass, will there be insects or other stuff growing or found in the wheat grass at all - or with soil-less, we can be free of insects, etc. Once again, thank so very much for this video. @davidnewton30646 жыл бұрын
You change the water about once per week eh. I have something similar to your setup and my water also gets nasty after several days. Yellowish and translucent, slightly slimy, and smells terrible. What do you attribute this to? I've seen people mention fermentation when they talk about soaking wheat berries. Is this what causes the change in the reservoir? Also, did you ever settle on the correct number of soak cycles per day?
@Bigfamilyhomestead6 жыл бұрын
David, This system and video are now over two years old, so we have improved on it. The water yellowing is something you just need to deal with. We change it every 4-5 days when it starts to smell. The watering gets done two times a day for about 30-45 mins per cycle. I have seen other systems that are outside, and the operators have an abundance of water so they don't try to recycle it at all. They simply put much more the water in the top and when it gets to the bottom, it drains out into a bucket that they use for other purposes- It does not go back to the top. Those work pretty well, but I need my system inside because of the weather.
