USB-C power supply mods for retro consoles is a great idea.

The DCHDMI (now called DC Digital) has been around for years. It provides gorgeous HDMI output but does require a bit of fine soldering to get it installed.
@JoeBleeps6 ай бұрын
@@dreamcazman I went with the lazy option and used Kaico's HDMI adapter. Less fun but it works great. I'd love to try the HDMI mod at some point.

It's a fairly easy console to work with too 😊

@@JoeBleeps It's well worth it. I have the original v1 in my DC, there's also a newer v2 which provides some extra bells and whistles.

It looks like an awesome PSU replacement for the Dreamcast Which one of the USB C PSU do you recommend RetroSix or RobotRetro ?

RobotRetro for sure

they wrote: "The OEM Dreamcast power supply is a combined 110v/240v AC to DC converter. This is quite inefficient and noisy, which can manifest in a “fuzzy” video signal. " which is totally wrong. it could be inefficient yes but never noisy! usb-c chargers are so noisy and not really guaranteed in terms of safety

Great video. I was seriously about to pull the trigger on this, but I got a Dreamcast Karaoke addon and unfortunately that rules out this mod. Because the addon powers the Dreamcast and it uses the standard power cord head. I had to swap my PAL powerboard for a NTSC power board for obvious reasons (voltage levels for a JP Dreamcast into a PAL Dreamcast...)
@JoeBleeps6 ай бұрын
Ahhh that does make sense. Still, enjoy your karaoke!

@@JoeBleeps Yaa, it's a fun addon and makes the DC look like part of a tower of power. Before I got it I thought it would be entirely powered by the slot where modem adapter goes, but nope. It has two power ports, one goes into the DC and one into the wall. There's also two video ports, one for a video patch cable to direct video from the DC through it and one for standard video output to a display.

Be so so careful grabbing the old PSU, there's lots of exposed places for you to get zapped there even when it's off!

No DCHDMI Mod that is even better than VGA because it's digital and the sound and video go thru one cable so no need to have a separate cable for sound.

You seem to have forgotten about all the disadvantages of modern high current switchmode power supplies and the destruction and devastation to the psu or main board when something fails, resulting in it being unfixable. My old Dreamcast psu works just fine and is using all common off the shelf parts so it's easy to fix. Here's something else to think about.... my Space Invaders arcade game and power supply from 1979 is also still working. What you have there is basically the smps circuit from a modern laptop motherboard and modern laptops are using little 5mm SMPS chips on purpose so they fail after just a few years. Just look at how many Apple devices or PC laptops are piled up in scrapyards. Please come back here in 45 years and let us all know if your new DC psu is still working and if your modern PC you are using right now is also still working. I'm betting the answer for both will be no ;-)

We'll just have to see. I understand the appeal of keeping things original, just as other people would understand my need to tinker with things. It's definitely fun being able to run this from a power bank! And my original power supply is still here if the new one ever develops any issues.

I'm probably wrong but aren't most laptops left on 24 hours a day for years at a time? I wonder if that has anything to do with the failure rate of parts after a shorter amount of time than older PSUs.

Can a 45 W Charger work on this Mod?
@JoeBleeps6 ай бұрын
I expect so. My 30W Pixel charger worked with it, and I got a 30W Ugreen charger from Amazon that also works. So 45W should have no problems but double check the voltages it's capable of, just to be sure
@ManweruEmanuilov10 күн бұрын
Can't believe I fell for it and wasted 60 euros on this, not including shipping. Works when it wants to, and even if it did work every time, it's common sense that USB PD will always be worse in terms of efficiency. Picture quality isn't as good as with a picopsu and a cheap meanwell power brick, regardless of what charger you use with this.
@JoeBleeps9 күн бұрын
@@ManweruEmanuilov may be worth getting in touch with Robot_Retro as you may have a faulty unit? I've not had any of those issues with mine, I'd have mentioned them in the video if so
