Hi Bob. I just wanted to take a moment here, to say that you, are among humanity’s absolute best. It is clear from what you share with us, that you are unassuming, deep, thoughtful, intelligent, concerned with what’s right, and honest. I know that’s not what you make videos about, but it deserves recognition, and it is all too rare that we recognize individuals for such important yet underestimated qualities. thank you for your hard work, and for the interesting, informative, thought provoking, and entertaining content.

It's refreshing to see someone be honest about classification of species. As a birdwatcher and scientifically minded person, I get into discussions all the time like "why did Nelson's sparrow get split" and "Larus gulls are not a ring species". The truth is that nature isn't math. With math, everything is very clear. One plus one always equals two. With biology, however, it's all trying to do the human tendency of classification and putting gradients into defined boxes. My favorite example is the Northern Flicker. It has two distinct morphs: the red-shafted and yellow-shafted (shaft as in the shaft of a feather). They interbreed in a thin area, but like a lot of birds, there's a a split in range: yellow-shafted to the east of the rockies, red-shafted to the west. Having lived in both regions, the red-shafted and yellow-shafted have a behavioral divide. In my experience, yellow-shafted tend to flock more often and are less likely to make calls when alone. Red-shafted are noisier in general, but don't actually make their rattling mating call as much as the yellow-shafted. However, they're just one species.

I see self awareness as a continuum along the taxonomy specification listing. A yearling whitetail buck isnt going to challenge a fully mature buck in his prime because the yearling senses the difference in size and strength. On the African plains Springbok jump high in the air to show predators that are eyeballing them as a potential meal, that they are physically fit and hard to catch. I think most animals are self aware to the extent they have to be in order to survive. It is only us humans that have taken self awareness to the point of vanity, deceit and psychological disorders such as narcissism.

I always assumed bigfoot, if it's real, is a great ape that evolved in East Asia and moved over the land bridge to the Americas. It would likely be related to gigantopithecus or a similar, currently unknown species and its closest living relative would be orangutans. Who knows though. An ape-like primate from the Americas seems possible too.

Hi Bob, great video as always. I’m pretty inexperienced in the world of paleo anthropology (I’m specializing in dinosaurs and similar fauna) but it was really interesting to hear about the North American primates. If we look at what happened in the early Triassic or with the dinosaurs it’s not hard to imaging something convergently evolving in a relatively short time (again look at how quickly the dinosaurs got huge). I’m also really glad you mentioned elephants, somehow I find they get overlooked a lot when people talk about intelligent animals and I think they’re just as smart as we are even if the don’t use it in the same way. This is getting long but thanks for the video and keep up the good work.

Well, the face of the "creature" in the Patterson-Gimlin film is identical to some Homo Erectus skulls, especially the Peking man skull. Divergent evolution is my bet, that we are closer than we seem to be at first. This also explains the "language" in recordings like the Sierra Sounds.

From the claims of initial DNA testing they say it's an unknown primate pretty close in percentage to human but not quite, however I take those lightly as all secondary DNA tests have to be done by authorities in order to be confirmed and that's where they "disappear"

I think it is great to come across someone who has found a balance between a healthy type of skepticism and being open minded. As a senior citizen and a lifelong student of epistemology I can assure you that these traits are rare across a wide range of researchers on this planet, especially those confronting any controversial subject. I have been looking seriously into this subject for the past three or four years now mainly via the online world. Regarding North American "bigfoots" I had concluded (1) that the creatures exist and (2) that they are hominid but not hominin according to the latest scientific classification standards. I have now also concluded that (3) they are probably descended from or branched from the family of the New World Monkeys or Ceboidea rather than Hominidae.(So yes I agree with your conclusions of convergent evolution.) Finally, I think that (4) they are sentient but have not developed analytical reasoning to the degree Homo Sapiens has, hence they do not show the kind of culture that we humans exhibit. I am not saying that they lack intelligence in that sense but their "evolutionary strategy" has led to a significantly different lifestyle than ours. These conclusions are based on the current dearth of definitive evidence of course. I have "connected the dots" in my own way.

20:20 I'd like to share my model of "consciousness", as I believe there are separate things here that are commonly muddled together: Sentience is "experiencing", or qualia, inciuding emotion, and is an awareness. "Self-awareness" is the modeling of oneself as a distinct entity. And "intelligence" is the ability to accomplish complex goals in complex environments (my favorite, working definition, from the AI researcher Ben Goertzel, as it requires one to "generalize" -- notice patterns). Humans happen to have all three. Other creatures can have [almost] any combination and amount of these three: Mice for example probably experience (have some sentience) but probably do not model themselves (no self-awareness) and can achieve simpler goals. All animals can generalize to accomplish complex goals in complex environments -- but to vastly different extents. AI systems can have some amount of general intelligence while not experiencing anything and not modeling themselves.

There's too many folks out there that have maybe and I say maybe actually witnessed a Big Foot for a few seconds seem to think they can come to all these conclusions about Big Foot including the fact that they're human and they're this and that... maybe those folks need to practice a little humility. I have some objections to your characterization of hominid phylogeny and evolution, particularly your description of _Australopithecus._ While the genus _Australopithecus_ has historically been something of a wastebasket taxon, in no way does that imply that it is an artificial group, nor that its evolutionary relationships are anything but clear. Currently the scientific consensus is that genus _Homo_ actually lies _within_ genus _Australopithecus,_ as all members of _Australopithecus_ have features that clearly show they descend from a common ancestor that would have also been a part of the genus, but some members of _Australopithecus_ appear to be closer to _Homo_ than other members are; _A. sediba_ being a wonderful example of a species which shares many derived traits of genus _Homo_ while still retaining the core suite of _Australopithecus_ features. This means that rather than being a monophyletic group to the exclusion of all other groups, _Australopithecus_ is best conceived as an evolutionary grade, like fish are to tetrapods, consisting of the closest relatives to genus _Homo_ which are not themselves part of genus _Homo_ (there's also _Paranthropus_ and _Kenyanthropus,_ which are also Australopith-grade taxa, but like _Homo,_ they have enough unique features that they are placed into their own genera). The difficulties in classifying _Australopithecus_ come not from contradictions in their place within human evolution, but because the gradient between _Australopithecus_ and early _Homo_ is so smooth that it is no longer possible to clearly demarcate where one ends and the other begins-- it's called "the transition that wasn't," because the line between them is so fuzzy that it might as well not exist at all; the evidence only makes sense if we understand _Homo_ as simply being derived members of _Australopithecus._ We even have genetic data from _Paranthropus,_ gathered from preserved protein sequences in the teeth, which show definitively that it was significantly closer to _Homo sapiens_ than any other extant ape, but not quite as close as _H. neanderthalensis_ or Denisovans, which is exactly what we would expect to see if it was a basal branch of the human family tree. Another note on nomenclature: typically, "Hominidae" refers to the great apes, while "Hominoidea" refers to the great apes plus gibbons, which form a monophyletic group with the great apes as their sister clade, but which are classified within their own family, the _Hylobatidae._ "Hominini" is a bit of a looser term; I think _technically_ "Hominini" refers to humans and _Pan,_ while "Hominina" refers to to apes more closely related to _Homo_ than to _Pan,_ but I don't see those terms get used a whole lot in the literature. Generally, the term "hominin" refers specifically to the largest clade that includes _Homo_ but not _Pan,_ i.e. all the apes that are more closely related to humans than to chimpanzees. As for how to classify an animal like Bigfoot. We obviously don't know much about the specifics of Bigfoot anatomy, or its genetics, but I think we have enough consistent details to cover the broad strokes. I think we can say very definitively that Bigfoot is a Hominoid, based on the orthograde (upright) posture, chest that is broader than it is deep, fully extensible elbows, and highly mobile shoulder joints. All of those adaptations originally arose for the purposes of arboreal suspensory locomotion, which as far as we can tell is unique to the Hominoids; early fossil apes display a similar pronograde (horizontal) posture and limited arm flexibility to Cercopithecid monkeys, and only develop the more traditionally ape-like body shape closer to the crown group of Hominoids. While it is not _necessarily_ inconceivable that Bigfoot might be a highly derived Hylobatid, there are no obvious features to suggest that it would be, and its gross anatomy seems to be the most consistent with the Hominidae, mainly based on the large body size and (apparently) large brain. Where it would sit within the Hominidae is harder to tell for sure. It's worth noting that our current evidence suggests knuckle-walking is not the ancestral condition for great apes; it is not seen in orangutans, the most basal member of the family, or in gibbons, the closest outgroup, or, indeed, in any fossil Hominid currently described; and while it is a feature shared by chimpanzees and gorillas, both these apes achieve their knuckle walking with different mechanisms, strongly suggesting that they evolved it independently from one another and that their last common ancestor was not a knuckle-walker. Modern human hands actually have proportions that are most similar to the basal fossil apes from the Miocene; we seem to have retained the primitive condition in this regard, while the other great apes evolved more derived hands to suit their unique locomotor styles. There is actually a growing amount of evidence to suggest that the common ancestor of chimpanzees and humans might have looked more like a human than it did like a chimpanzee: _Sahelanthropus tchadensis,_ an extremely early hominin from very soon after the estimated divergence time between chimpanzees and humans, has a relatively anterior foramen magnum, meaning that its head sat on top of a vertical spinal column, like humans, and suggesting that even at this early stage of evolution it would have had a predisposition towards walking upright when on the ground; something that gibbons also do when walking on the ground, which is very amusing to watch. This is also very similar to the condition in _Oreopithecus,_ which you mentioned, and the fact that both gibbons and orangutans are suspensory animals further supports the idea that the common ancestor of all the modern great apes may have been an upright suspensory climber, and if this body plan led to obligate terrestrial bipedalism once, it could certainly do it again. I don't think it's as absurd as you say to suggest that Bigfoot might have an affinity with the African apes more than to orangutans, as we are already aware of one group of African apes which migrated out of Africa on at least three separate occasions, probably far more. I don't know if we can say for sure that Bigfoot is a hominin, but there are a couple features which make me think that's the most likely place to put it: - First and most obviously, it's bipedal. While it's not inconceivable for habitual terrestrial bipedalism to have evolved convergently in multiple Hominid groups, bipedality is _so_ pervasive within the hominins that its presence in Bigfoot is highly suggestive. Like, we don't even have any _fossils_ of hominins that don't show clear evidence of having been bipedal, right down to the last common ancestor with chimpanzees. - Second, less obviously, it has reduced prognathism compared to other Hominids, i.e., its mouth doesn't stick out as far; it's less "snouty." In addition to increasing adaptations to bipedalism, decreased prognathism is another one of the big trends we see going up the hominin family tree. One potential feature that could suggest _against_ a hominin affinity is the fact that some eyewitnesses report seeing large canines, particularly in the males. Reduction of canine size is one of the first features that we see emerging in the hominin lineage, coinciding with an overall trend towards reduced sexual dimorphism, and even in hominins that seem to have re-evolved significant sexual dimorphism, such as some members of _Australopithecus,_ the canines remain small, suggesting their role in intraspecific combat was reduced or absent. I don't think this is enough to conclude that Bigfoot isn't a hominin, though. We just don't know a lot of details about this animal's dental anatomy, and large canines are not a universal feature in eyewitness descriptions. Personally I would predict that if its canines _were_ as significant as those of other great apes, they would be a far more frequent feature of eyewitness accounts. Narrowing the taxonomy down even further, the foot morphology suggests an Australopith, as it has an inline big toe, which isn't known outside of _Australopithecus,_ and the biomechanics of Bigfoot tracks remind me a lot of the Laetoli footprints, attributed to _Australopithecus afarensis,_ which show that the print-maker bore its weight more evenly across the sole of its foot than a modern human does, much like Bigfoot is reported to. If I had to make even more specific guesses, the sagittal crest and robust morphology remind me a lot of _Paranthropus,_ but that genus isn't known from outside of Africa and never showed anywhere near the massive body sizes of something like Bigfoot. But who knows? A lot can happen in two million years-- enough that without a complete anatomical description from a body, I don't feel comfortable placing Bigfoot any more specifically than "a giant hominin with Australopith affinities." But I do feel fairly confident in placing it there. ... assuming it isn't just a particularly mischievous _Homo sapiens,_ that is. :P

Bob, you’ll never convince me Bigfoot is flesh and blood without a body, and before I watched your channel i would have said he was a fabrication upon seconds of the question being asked. That being said, the way you articulate and approach eyewitness accounts, footprints, recordings, etc, has made me reconsider my hardwired skepticism. Not only that but you have a knack for making a lot of sense. Almost more sense than I’m willing to admit. That being said I now consider the reality of Bigfoot more akin to plausibility than the pipe dream I thought before. Thanks for helping me rekindle some childlike fascination.
