I am entirely now waiting to see what such a maximum size estimate for spinosaurus would look like.
@Saurophaganax19313 ай бұрын
Hard to say. We have so few specimens of Spinosaurus that it's hard to say exactly what their average size is. If we don't know the average size then we can't really estimate the largest extent. Same goes for Giganotosaurus. We only have two specimens, one of which is only a jaw. That's just not enough data to draw an average from.
@TheDinoFax3 ай бұрын
What the other person said is correct. This was possible with Tyrannosaurus because we have so much good material for it that we have a rather large sample size, each with regional and morphological variations. We would need to know a rough average size of the animal before we could make this kind of calculation. In animals like Spinosaurus, which only has a few fragmentary finds, we don't know an average size. We know an estimated size based off the fossils we have, but we don't know if these individuals are big examples, small ones, or even just average. We simply need more fossil material. For other dinosaurs with good material, like Triceratops or other animals, this type of calculation IS possible because of such a large sample size.

@TheDinoFax3 ай бұрын
30 years is roughly the maximum age as of right now for Tyrannosaurus. The lifespan of a Rex is a complicated topic, which I discussed in my long-form video about T. Rex a couple months back. Basically, we've studied their ontogeny enough that we have a good idea of their growth curve. These new sizes would be for animals in the same age range as Scotty and Sue, who are considered to be in the 90th percentile for Tyrannosaur sizes.

I don’t see how this is a revolutionary new study. It’s been taken into account many times. Modern birds show a great deal of individual variation and most dinosaurs show the same. With species that don’t have many adult specimens we can assume they’re the average which scaling from modern analogs and other dinosaurs with more specimens could give a rough max. But for all we know they could be on the lower end of size. For tyrannosaurus in particular I don’t think the actual max is much larger than cope since we have soo many fully mature specimens we have a pretty good idea of the average and bounds. The largest tyrannosaurus would likely be around 13 metres and 12 tonnes.
