A great story for sure! In fact, I have a very similar story myself. I actually was living in Houston working a corporate data analytics job in the oil industry. After 5 years of that, got laid off (typical oil industry cycle) and decided to stop depending on others for my income. Long story short, liquidated my investments for capital, got into REI and made some mistakes on the first deal I did, learned that construction was everything in RE so I started learning. Moved to a small mountain town where supply/demand was in my favor, worked construction for a bit, and now, just a few years later, I own my own home building business, building my own investments for steep discount, and GCing contract jobs for additional income. Way better than that "middle management" corporate ladder I was on before with far better income potential (100-200k profit/equity per build). Big plans for the future, cant wait to see how the next 5 years go. I say all of this in the hopes of inspiring others to follow their passion for RE (if thats the case) because it really can be very rewarding. Just put the right effort in, because as with most things in life, you will get out of it what you put into it. DOnt short change yolurself.
