First of its kind! A backie comp, with absolutely no backies! Amazing!

I think the angle they chose isn't good to show it, but you can tell from how they drive into angle that they're past 90 on initiation. these dudes are definitely capable enough to follow the name of the comp

angle showed nicely and was multiple of them but has nothing to do with it. most drifts were just regular initiations, was not many backies at all (back tires in front of you not beside or else your just drifting) you can tell when they did it right cuz there trajectory will be different than a regular drift. And yes there capable of following the name of the comp but that dont mean they cant suck at backies. i watch people do them all the time irl and on youtube i know what im talking about and how to do them. All in all Formula drift usa is just loosing itself everyday trying to milk whatever they can out of it before people start realizing, japan should just take drifting back over and make it real again@@TheOtherPlayer

No, actually taking attention away from the thing that literally employs people and lets them live their dreams is actually a bad idea. There is a time and place for ancillary activities and we actually have done a lot of them: RSR, Turn 14 project of the same ilk, Nitto Day, SEMAFEST are all things we have constructed, 5 seasons of drifting development in Qatar, the first to ever drift Yas Marina in Abu Dhabi, the only Asian Championship that was broadcast on national television for 7 years, Formula DRIFT Asia....I think we do more than just the Series, but if you are talking about what moves the actual needle, it's building FD just like you would build something like the NFL Supercross or MLB. Homerun Derby contests and Big Air comps are cool; Passing exhibitions have their place, but they are not the foundation or what actually creates an industry, especially not at this early stage of only 20 years. @@mintyCS

@@ralmslb Ask yourself if us producing an event for RSR and them coming up with a name for a portion of competition has anything to do with what we know or Dai knows. We are literally the oldest drifting organization in the world outside D1 and he is one of the oldest, most experienced drifters; I think both of us kinda know what stuff means in this space and we also know people say dumb things on the internet while probably having done exactly zero of the things they are critiquing.
@ralmslb
@ralmslb 8 ай бұрын
@@formuladrift When you call an event "Biggest Backie Competition" and then solely focus on it with judges giving a score, the knowledge on the topic is important for fair scores. I think we both can agree on that. Then we watch the competition about backies, where essentially there is almost no backies preformed and yet very high scores. Backie being the ability for one to enter with the rear of the car first in a corner, which requires a lot of speed, power and driver control. Most of the runs were plain standard drifts, some good, but still, not a backie. You had Field first run, Bakchis second run, both pretty good but needed more speed and didn't deserve more than like an 80. With the best attempts I would say from Hibino first run that was like a 90 to 93 max. Also, being the oldest doing something in anything (regardless if an organization or person), doesn't automatically make you right on everything about that topic. Lastly, a very good athlete doesn't make a great referee or judge, often the opposite, the best athletes tend to not be good judging (we can see it on many sports). It's not the first time that FD organization refuses to accept criticism from the audience, assuming that the world is just a bunch of idiots and that only FD are the smart ones. If anything, people are really good at watching and judging, since they don't just watch FD. Remember, the best organizations in the world don't stay the best based on age...
@formuladrift
@formuladrift 8 ай бұрын
No, I just think you are taking it too seriously and giving too much credence to your own ruleset which is not the one that was decided by RSR. Why would we privilege your idea? Was it your event? No, it wasn't. If we have an understanding of what is possible on that turn and we create relational scoring and we also are trying to have fun, you will always have gradations and have to relativize the scores. Who cares what the numbers are? They are just a reflection of the scale the drivers were driving and it is just unimaginably pompous to think Dai Yoshihara, Ernie Fixmer and Andy Yen don't know what a backie is in a technical sense. You realize "Backie" is a much more fun and marketable term than "biggest initiation", right? You understand that basic principle? And whether or not the drivers could actually do it, is completely irrelevant to the naming PRIOR to the event. Next, we have no problem accepting valid criticism if indeed the criticism is a good one with the appropriate logical entailments, but that is a very rare situation. Secondly, I'm glad you agree with me that drivers are not necessarily the best judges. Maybe you should tell EVERY other fan that thinks the exact opposite. The entire premise of this event was giving back to the industry from RSR (literally hundreds of thousands of dollars spent), a fun event where the seriousness of a regular event simply washes away. That's why it makes sense to have Dai because he is a recognizable figure and he is Japanese! For me personally, I was there and had such a good time because it was about laughs and hanging with friends. No one could care less about some rando thinks about the names of events or their perception of good judging. Literally doesn't even register one iota because that was not the idea or the standard. Either try and have fun or get off the bus. @@ralmslb

I get it, formula drift judges think you can't follow a car doing backies in comp. I think some tracks have a first corner where the lead car should be able to throw a backie (for extra style points or whatever you guys score these days) and the rest of the track be drifted as "normal". Nothing gets the fans as hyped as backies and imagine if the chase car was able to mimic on that first corner. If you guys can find a way to incorporate them into your "rules", it would only gain FD's popularity (I might even subscribe and start watching again lol).
@timmah1588
@timmah1588 8 ай бұрын
Flick does not equal backie. Asbo's first run had zero backie (if your car does not go over 90 degrees to the wall, not a backie). If you do not do a backie, you should not get a score over 50.
@timmah1588
@timmah1588 8 ай бұрын
I appreciate the effort FD, despite other negative comments. Even my comment seems negative, I just was drifting to become bigger. Closer door to door runs (not setting up rules that discourage tapping the lead driver) and backies are definitely the move. And I realize I am talking to the void and probably looks cringe lol.
