idk if anyone will see this, but the rule that "75% of the tank should have UVB coverage" was for T8 linear fixtures. Since T5 high output bulbs are becoming more accessible, it just needs to be the length of their body, so 12-18 inches. It just needs to cover their basking spot and that will be enough UVB. And then you put 1 or 2 heat lamp next to the center of the UVB so that the hottest spot also has the highest UVB exposure. This will allow them to have a gradient from intense heat + UVB to cooler temp+shade.

Thanks for this, I was worried my tube was still too small, but the size up was too large. It is T5 and should be fine.

I got my beardie as a rescue with NO IDEA what I was doing. The person who gave them to me gave me utterly awful advice. Coil UVB "if i wanted to" cuz it "wasn't a big deal." Paper towels were the "best liner cuz their poop will make them sick." And that it was a boy lmao. Thankfully she's living in a MUCH better enclosure and it only took a month or so of my own research to realize I need to take myself to reptile school on a regular basis. Thanks for another awesome video!

I am a new beardie mom. My daughter and I have watched so many videos for our research. When you found yours we only with your personality also feel very represented. “Momma she looks like you!” We are hooked. You have helped us change Spyro, our 3 year old rescue’s life. The biggest mistake I made was excepting a 55 gallon fish tank as a gift to make his home. He is a climbing enthusiast so I thought the height would be OK. Once I added my bio active substrate the humidity got so intense I had to put him back in his original 20 gallon tank. Today I am building his habitat so he can be in a proper home. My question is the thermometers that also gauge humidity, how accurate are those? I have a temperature gun and a digital humidity reader. It just takes a while for the digital humidity reader to pick up different areas in his tank. He is not a fan of it. But it is definitely a learning process. I thank you for all of your content and look forward to much much more! Thank you!

These and green iguanas are probably the most expensive “cheap” reptiles. I have a green iguana it’s all that holds me back from having a beardie.

Im really glad you touched on loose substrate! Thsts still a big fear of mine and I have a female beardie so I need ro get over it. She eats everything so its something I have been so reluctsnt to add into her tank. Its honesty really helpful and calming to see people that have successful keeping skills to say its ok to add this in. So thank you and for being honest on your mistakes because there isnt a herp owner alive new or old that has not made mistakes. We learn we adapt we improve ^_^

Right now I have a 13 watt compact fluorescent or cool bulb as you call it that I bought when I got my beardie, and a 26 watt compact fluorescent that came with the 40 gallon enclosure I just bought, I've got both of them up there now since I've been hearing they aren't good enough, and I don't have the extra money after buying the new enclosure to go buy a t5 setup, so I guess I'll be getting a t5 setup next week

Hey so I work at Petco and we switch the bearded dragons in the leopard gecko sand out with reptile carpet because two of our baby beardies died we think it’s because of impaction from the sand we’re not 100% on it. And my coworker who has two beardies said that the sand won’t cause an impaction and that’s the whole reason why we display them with the sand but I’m not 100% on that I just want to get your opinion on if sand is better or the carpet is better I feel like the carpet is the best we could do in the store we don’t have tile or anything else other than the carpet to use.

Hi so I have a question regarding my baby beardie. When he is in his cage or inclosure he is this dark black brown colour but if I hold him for a long period of time to the point where he falls asleep on me he turns in to the light brown colour some say he is dark because he is absorbing more heat but I just want to get another opinion before I freak out and go to the vet with him . P.s I love watching your videos and learning more from it.

i have a quick question about the temperature. Do i have to have a temperature gun AND the stick on temperature things, or can i just have the temperature gun? Also ❤ ur videos they have helped so much with my research!!!
@ellesreptiles Жыл бұрын
Both. 😊 The temp gun is going to measure surface temperatures (so basking spot, cold spot), whereas the stick on thermometers measure ambient temp. I recommend getting the kind that come as a temperature/humidity combo, so it can measure ambient temperature and humidity. And thank you so much, I'm so glad they're helpful! 💜

I think the big issue with loose substrate for bearded dragons is for males and their femoral pores, not impaction? I am NOT an expert or even a keeper. I'm 100% speaking from secondhand experience, but I've heard from multiple sources and several friends (bug keepers and reptile keepers seem to run in the same circles lol) that as long as it's not sand, impaction isn't much of a problem for beardies. So I'm guessing that from what you're saying is that the right loose substrate is okay for females? But with males, they have femoral pores that get easily clogged. I have a friend who controls this by letting their male beardie soak in warm water regularly because she uses a bioactive enclosure with loose substrate, but this is a lot of work if you have multiple animals and I imagine it could be stressful for certain beardies. Another KZbinr, Goherping, talks about and even shows this. Those femoral pores getting clogged can be really dangerous. My friend who soaks their beardie does this because their bearded dragon before almost lost the use of his back legs from his pores getting so stretched out. Again, not an expert at all like you are. I had no idea about the burrowing thing for females since most of my info comes from my friend with a male beardie and GoHerping who is the only big reptile channel that talks about femoral pores. Anyway, I'm so glad I discovered your channel and am 100% subscribing!

Great video! I like how you delivered this and confessed that you have made some of these mistakes. The information out there and given to new bd owners is confusing and still not accurate. Thanks for doing this from a place of care and love for the animals and not making people feel stupid or horrible for making mistakes.

Thank you! 😊 After entering the reptile world, one of my biggest pet peeves quickly became people making other people feel bad about even the smallest of mistakes. Especially in places like Facebook groups, where people were just asking for help. No one is perfect, and the important thing is that we learn and grow and do the best for our little critters ♥️
@jennifermier26253 жыл бұрын
@@ellesreptiles I agree, people have to understand that most reptiles keepers are getting their information and confidence in big chain pet stores. We have to be kind and help each other so we can continue to enjoy these awesome animals!

A neither great video on beardies. We all make mistakes and learn from them so we can help others not make those kind of mistakes. If we don't help each other out how can we learn. So be supportive in stead of criticism because remember you most likely made mistakes at the beginning too. GOD BLESS 💖
