Those whistles represent an era that really solidified the building of America with families determined to make a go of it. To be fair not everything was the " good old days" but these Steamers represent true engineering to overcome whatever nature threw at them. It certainly isnt noise but rather a sound that told millions of people in towns large and small here we come and we're getting it done. Happy Father's Day whether trackside or by the BBQ.

Those whistles echoing in the mountains are an unmatched piece o music!!!!!!! All the major railroad conpanies need to go back and use the steam engines and old passenger cars for overnight trips and "dinner trains"!!! Wouldnt that be a hoot JT???!!!!!

I was wondering if you were there for this years parade. I absolutely love hearing the whistles resounding throughout the beautiful mountains of West Virginia. It's been a minute since I've been over to Cass, but I've riden up to Whittaker and Bald Knob dozens of times over the years. Happy Father's day everyone.

Dad from a Coal Mining Camp in southern West Virginia and mom from a farm in southwest Virginia. Both rode steam many, many times. Love this. Those distant whistles echoing through the valleys just puts goosebumps on your arms. Nothing more nostalgic than that. One good thing about being old is that I'm old enough to remember the distant whistle of a steam engine. Thanks JT.

I consider myself extremely lucky to live near Yorkshire’s National Railway Museum (NRM), which probably has the biggest collection of steam locomotives in the world, but sadly not many are functional anymore. My favourite locomotive is the Ivatt Atlantic, 251, which currently resides at Danum in Doncaster, beside Green Arrow. Last time I was at the NRM in August 2022, the other Ivatt Atlantic, Henry Oakley, was behind doors having works done. It’d be nice to see him functional.

Back in 1952 I lived in Southern Illinois in a town that had two different railroads come through town. I remember seeing my first diesel Locomotive and it was pulling twenty-six steam locomotive to the steel mill in Granite City where they were all scrapped. Livingston had a coal mine and water tower along the tracks and the Steam Locomotives would replenish their water and Coal supplies. I still love to watch and listen to the old Iron Horses any chance that I get to see.💝. The two railroad companies were Chicago and Northwestern and New York Central.

There is something special about live steam locomotives. To stand next to one you might think it was alive. The sound of a lonesome steam whistle in the mountains give me goosebumps. As a historian, I try to imagine life in America in the 1940’s. A time when this sound was commonplace across the continent.

The first time I seen one of those steam engines with the three vertical cylinders, was back in the 1960's in New Jersey. I was a young teenager at the time. Neat steam engine switcher for hills as well. Wow 5 (or so) engines with gear driven traction wheels! Have you considered traveling or been to the Strasburg Railroad and museum in Lancaster county Pennsylvania? Now that is a cool place to visit as well!

Okay, JT, all your videos at the least are very good. A lot of them fall into the excellent category, some into the WOW category. But this one is the "bestest" one yet! There is not an adequate word to describe it! The steam whistles sent chills up the spine. Watching all the moving parts that turn the wheels is seeing an engineering marvel. Hearing the bells ringing really brings back memories of my dad. He went to work on the NWP RR in 1923 at the age of 15. Among his duties at first was always making sure the bell was shined up before the train left. He worked himself up to engineer on the steam engines and then on the diesels! Thanks so much for some great video and memories! Liked the quick little peek at the family. Especially loved seeing Chessie up the tree!

Biggest Collection of Operating Steam Locomotives EVER? Sorry, Brian, But not even close! Over here in England UK, we have a lot of preserved Railway lines. This year I wass able to visit the Cotswolds Steam Fair in May. There were six Steam Locos at the event. Three of these were "Named" locos - Pendennis castle, Dinmore Manor and Orient (a 4-6-2 Merchant Navy class). The others were a small 0-6-0 Saddle Tank, an 0-4-0 shunter (Switcher) and a n 0-6-0 Pannier tank. All Operating and leading trains. That was a small 16 mile line called the Gloucester and Warwickshire Railway, run by volunteers. E few years ago, York England's Railway museum brought Five A4 Pacifics together for the first time in 30 years! together with there being at least four other steamers present, then That makes 9 locos. Maybe it's the biggest collection you've seen, but Britain had steam locomotives running up until the 1960s as a main power type, so a lot more have been preserved by private societies. Also The A1 Company recently announced that (in addition to having built the A1 Tornado 4-6-2 Steam Loco at the beginning of this Century), they are currently building a P2 2-8-0 Loco, which will no doubt be given a name once it's completed. There is a lot of steam locomotion in the UK.
