Well Mr. 🦷 that was great. Being 83, I do remember seeing those big beautiful green Pacific locomotives in the final years of steam for the SOUTHERN and riding the SOUTHERN during the war although I don’t remember the riding but my mother told me that’s the way we visit our relatives in the next town because it was hard to get gas to travel. I always wanted to get as close to the engine at the station although all the noise with the steam,air pumping steam generator roaring away I was scared to death, but I loved it 😬

Hi Jaw Tooth! I grew up in Schenectady, NY. One of our neighbors was a mechanical engineer at Alco. I remember many times driving down Maxon Rd going past the Alco plant. There was probably 20 tracks in the yard behind Alco's plant. That yard always had a collection of diesel power on the tracks. There were three tracks in the back of the yard where a collection of steam power was parked too. Today the Alco site has a casino and pop up apartment community sitting on it. There is a steel fabrication outfit occupying the sole remaining Alco building on site. It's an eye sore to the modern look the developer is trying to achieve and the city is turning the screws on the fabricator to move out. The New York Central, Delaware & Hudson and Boston & Maine passed through Schenectady. Access in and out of Alco was via D&H track. A mile away is the D&H Mohawk Yard (now CPKC). From there was a mile long connecter track to New York Central's Scotia Yard and anything heading into New England went out on the B&M from the D&H Mohawk yard. My maternal grandfather was a machinist at the National Forge in Irvine, PA. When he was not making submarine periscopes during World War II he was machining very large locomotive parts for Alco. "The Forge" (local parlance) used to have a contract with Alco. Today The Forge is served by the Buffalo & Pittsburgh RR.

I don’t think people will ever be train spotting a diesel locomotive. There is something truly magical about a steamer. From the huffing and puffing to the distinctive shape; no diesel can ever compare. Perhaps also it is the reminiscing of simpler times.😊😢
@fnava1987Ай бұрын
We chase diesel locomotives daily
@labeef1953Ай бұрын
@@fnava1987 Isn’t that to see an entire train like Jaw Tooth? I’m talking about seeing a specific locomotive. I don’t think that people coming to see Big Boy really care to much about what cars he’s towing. People that trainspotter modern diesels are there for the entire train, not a specific locomotive, unlike steamers, where people show up to see a specific steam engine. 😊😊🚂🚂🚂

I always like watching the "Big Boy" videos. The only time that I have seen the "Big Boy" up close and personal was in August 1969. Neil Armstrong had just finished setting foot on the Moon, and Apollo-11 safely returned home. Boeing Aerospace contractors were given one of two choices: 1) A pink slip and Adios! Or 2) Transfer to the 747 fabrication plant in Everett, WA. With four small children in the family, Dad opted for choice #2. While traveling to Everett, we stopped at the U.P. yards in Cheyenne. For this 9 yr. old that was paradise. Only thing better than watching a "Big Boy" go by, would be catching a ride on one.

Great video, JT. One doesn't realize how much effort and support people are necessary to keep this hunk of iron running including the local fire department to pump the water back into the tenders. I remember seeing the Big Boy years ago in Wyoming before it was refurbished. I don't think that it made it to the Sf Bay Area this time though it was in Sacramento and then headed back towards Reno, NV and points East. I would imagine it would be extremely difficult to schedule a run through here with all the commuter train traffic. Glad that UP is putting up all the money and effort to keep all those steam engines running.
