Netflix's recent release of the 22nd Pokemon movie, Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution, comes full circle by returning to the first film of the franchise: Pokemon: The First Movie - Mewtwo Strikes Back. The original film is likely a cornerstone of many a young millennial's memory (there are no doubt countless twentysomethings who were traumatized by seeing Pikachu crying as kids).

I agree, however, some of the English lines were better in some cases. Like when Jessie pulls out the frying pan Meowth says "Without something to cook It's simply a round anvil made of iron" or something to that effect. In the original it was a comedic line to match up with Team Rockets clown-like personality. "Last time you cooked you took out 8 of my 9 lives"

I came to the comments just to see if anyone else was mad about this. I can overlook most of the other changes, it was almost a great movie, but the removal of Brother My Brother and the Meowths' philosophical discussion just tanked it for me. Not only that, but they replaced it with some lines about how "claws hurt" and then clone Meowth asking if the moon was going to be full. They butchered one of the most important scenes in the film.

They 'removed' it because it wasn't in the original Japanese script, they revised a lot of lines in the remake to be more faithful to the original 1998 film while keeping in some lines from the 4Kids version that were already translated faithfully. Mewtwo's character is much more philosophical in the original than what 4Kids turned him into. You should check it out via fan subs or something, it's almost like watching a whole other film (especially because it has around 20 minutes added in the beginning to fill in more of Mewtwo's backstory).

Im glad Im not the only one who noticed and was confused as to why they changed mew on the windmill. ​ the25thprime The gag was that mew would tumble down to the next blade, so the ride on the windmill was essentially unending. Now mew falls off the side and floats back up to get back on. The other one was a clever was to make the fun last forever, but beyond that, the scene flowed better cause mew fell into place instead of having to fly back up just to fall immediately after. Essentially increasing the setup time and slowing the pacing. (its a small thing, but its just weird for it to be changed)

They removed amber from the offical releases outside of Japan because of human cloning implications especially in a kid's cartoon. So I doubt they would re-reference her while showing a clip of mew flying away.

You missed another difference where Charizard gets a lot more screentime in this movie. In the original he is not seen eating with Ash after the opening credits. He also gets a comedic new scene where he uses flamethrower on Dragonite when their invitation is being delivered. This matches up (continuity-wise) with his attitude in the show at that time where he rarely listened to Ash and would act up.

Mew doesn't cry out when they first get hit by Mewtwo. I feel the fake cry was more in line with Mew's playful nature. Making Mewtwo think he's won so easily and then reflecting the blast back at him.

Additionally the Blastoise and its clone both used Skull Bash, whereas in the original one Blastoise used Hydro Pump and the other only used Rapid Spin. Also, when Mewtwo tells the clone Charizard to "finish it" in the original, it's changed the "Seismic Toss" in the remake.

In the Original Clone Charizard kinda use Seismic Toss when Mewtwo said "Finish him off!". Cause the way Ash's Charizard use Seismic Toss is by Charizard Taking his opponent up into the Sky and then throwing them into the Ground before he Lands! 😄

The biggest difference is the new one lacks the heart. Oh don’t get me wrong, this movie no doubt took effort on animators part. But the voice acting, the music choices, and the writing as a whole for how they tried to amp it up (with few exceptions, like the extended clone starter battle) as a whole fell entirely flat, ironically enough. The original was fluid and felt genuine, but this felt like they were working too hard trying to make it exactly beat for beat and made it come out like bad stop motion in many parts. I will unapologetically watch the original over this any day, forever. Because those iconic voices and emotions just cannot be cloned.

They removed the track ‘Three on Three’ from the, well, 3-on-3 scene. The increased length was cool with newer moves, but it kind of took away from the scene. The whole point was that the sheer power difference ended the fight in like 10 seconds. Charizard only lasted as long as it did because Ash told it to not focus on literal firepower. As for the soundtrack, it had a great mix of different themes and remixes that fit the mood perfectly

I was crossing my fingers for the remake to include Amber’s story to explain the Tears of Life, but I guess they just really wanted to do a very faithful adaption. Otherwise, it’s still very much the exact same movie just with different animation, and I’m not entirely sure how to feel about it quite yet.
