Wildlife and fisheries ecologist here: in case anyone wants to know, that would most likely be the Great Hammerhead species of hammerhead sharks, which have been known to get up to over 6 meters long and almost 1,000 lbs. Easiest way to identify them is by their HUGE dorsal fin compared to other hammerhead sharks (fin on top of the body). Hope this was interesting!

I was in the United States Coast Guard in 1978 in the Florida Keys on a 17’ boat and a Hammerhead shark swam beside us about a foot under the water surface and this shark was larger than our boat!! It could have tipped us over if it wanted to!! These sharks get to massive sizes!!

A friend and I went to dive out in the Gulf, our boat was over 25 feet long, a hammerhead was following our boat from about thirty feet away, this hammerhead was longer than our boat was. We decided to just fish that day, no going in the water. Pretty good decision.

My first time diving to 100’+ in Pompano Beach, FL, we started to make our ascent and the dive master pointed up, there were easily 500-1000 hammerheads swimming North. It was a very cool sight. I’ll never forget it.

Back in 1983 I was a part of a Royal Naval task group and we stopped at Ascension Island in the mid Atlantic. It was a very hot day and the skipper said the ships company could do a hands to bathe. Basically the ship was anchored and after putting cargo nets over the side if you fancied it you could go for a swim. Always great in the Mediterranean when we were there.

This brings back the trauma of Jaws when I was a kid of 6 yrs and went to this movie with older kids in the family. My cousins told me this was going to be a movie about a dolphin! I had nightmares for weeks after! Especially with the Jaws blanket someone put on my bed!😂
