It's not 100% confirmed if the names of the cities were derived from the deity's name or if it was the other way around. But it is confirmed that centuries ago people used to pray to localised deities like Dhakeshwari, Chatweshwari etc. People believed their city had It's own deity tasked to protect it and ensure prosperity. Even in Sundarbans, there is a unique local deity (Bondevi/bonchondwi) who is believed to watch over the forest, keep its balance and protect the locals from tigers. Locals there(both hindus and muslims) who collect honey, leaves etc from the forest believe in this deity.

As for Sylhet is concerned, or previously know as Srihotto, it is one of the 51 traditional Shakti peeths of bondhu mythology. The others in Bengal region are mainly in kalighat(Kolkata), bordhoman, nabadwip, chandranath in Chittagong, bogra, barishal and many more.

Coming from a Muslim family; I am proud of this history and the beautiful name of the temple and the city. There is no point of following any religion if it cannot teach you humanity, tolerance, peace and harmony. We tend to forget that the high caste Bangali land lords used to have their palaces in Kolkata and from there they used to rule the poor East Bangalis as the Jamindars or Land Lords. Those oppressed Bangalis supported the Pakistan movement to seek some breathing space and freedom from the powerful Hindu Land Lords of West Bengal. So we decided to be part of East Pakistan. But then we have noticed West Pakistanis want to be our rulers too. So, in 1971 East Bengal or East Pakistan became my beautiful Bangladesh. No doubt India helped us 1971; but we East Bengalis also helped Indian freedom from the British Rule. A lot of Indians tend to forget that. Since Independence Bangladesh is progressing. Now, we should do more business with India and Pakistan. But, we Bangladeshis must keep our distance from Indians and Pakistanis at the same time; because they hate and look down on Bangladeshis. This is a fact. Bangladeshi tourism and import dependency with India must be reduced in the near future. We should have stronger border walls with India and grow our own cattle. We should strictly reduce any religious extremism at all cost. I do not want my beautiful Bangladesh to become the next Pakistan or Afghanistan. Coming from a Muslim family; I am proud of this history and the beautiful name of the temple and the city. There is no point of following any religion if it cannot teach you humanity, tolerance, peace and harmony. Apart from few incidents here and there; we the Bangalis from Bangladesh irrespective of our religious background love to live together in peace. Besides, the river in which you traveled in a boat, my father said once the great Rabindranath Tagore visited Dhaka and in his visit he did not stay in any resident. In the whole time of his visit he stay on Buriganga river on a boat. So that he can enjoy the beauty of the Buriganga river. Alas, the mighty and beautiful Buriganga river has lost its glorious day.

The situation of Hindus in Bangladesh is deplorable...my ancestors(both father and mothers side lived in present day mymensingh district) came to India and settled in siliguri west bengal) after 1947 my grandfather used to tell me stories about when he was a kid before partition. It's sad to see the land from where my ancestors came from was divided. Deepanshu bhai if you can could you visit mymensingh district. At least I can see it from your eyes. @@abdulgaffar4597-g7h I would say they made the correct choice. Even if they left their matribhumi.....it's better to live in a land where you will not be persecuted on religious basis. I mean Pakistan was created just on the basis of religion. And Bangladesh was east Pakistan at that time. My grandfather tried to make contact after liberation of 1971 but he wasn't given citizenship, all his ancestral lands were confiscated so was for most of hindu people. And I am saying this as per his description not from any online or personal bias. Straight up hard facts. Just try to think from from the perspective of the people of 1947 when religion based riots were rampant on the west as well as east. I think it was the correct decision.

(2) They also migrate to India because they feel more connected to India rather than to Bangladesh, as Hindus are majority in India. (3) The birth rate of Hindus are low, I think also in India.
