Cersei was 100% about to kill Tommen and herself. She knew that she and her kids couldn't be taken prisoner by Stannis.

I also hate Cersei, but I totally understand her wanting to give her son a painless death. Rheagar Targeryan's children were not so lucky back when the mad king fell.

The song Bronn sings with the soldiers at the beginning of the episode is the Lannister song. It's the same tune to which Tywin enters the throne room at the very end. By the time you're done with the series you'll never forget that song. That's a guarantee.

The ending of Blackwater is chef's kiss. Cersei's talks with everyone all through this episode is great,but that final monologue with Tommen is what you call "aesopian". Juxtaposed to that is the imagery of Loras Tyrell in Renly's armor and helm, cutting through the Baratheon lines under the moonlit night looking like an ethereal entity. Then we have Tywin's grand entrance in the throne room to Rains of Castamere. Too good! Battles in period movies are all about the jazz of the combat, whereas Blackwater is just a backdrop, a vehicle to tell the story of the characters. It's not just some spectacular action p0rn. The realism of the moment and the psychology of the different characters in the process of reckoning with their own mortality is as important as the actual sword fighting. War isn't glorified or made to seem desirable. You're alternatively torn between rooting for either side and no one at all.

Throughout Season 2 Robb Stark is pillaging the Westerlands (seat of House Lannister) to bait Tywin out of Harrenhal (which is in the Riverlands, seat of House Tully). So they were basically side by side, both holding out in each others' lands trying to see who blinks first. But Tywin realizes Harrenhal in the middle of enemy territory is indefensible, saving the capital is more important. So he abandons the defensive garrison at Harrenhal and instead of going west towards Robb, he takes the Lannister forces to a night march 6 o'clock of Harrenhal, straight down into King's Landing. He has Loras Tyrell with him who is wearing Renly's armor to the bewilderment of the Baratheon forces. With Stannis crushed and with House Tyrell, Lords of The Reach, now alligned with the crown, Robb not only let Tywin's army escape from the Riverlands, he's now pretty much cut off from King's Landing. Tywin has out maneuvered Robb and Stannis.

There are so many reasons to hate Joffrey in the show, but for me this one really stings. In the feudal society, this is the one time where the nobles have to put up, when a war comes they have to raise an army and lead it to defend the people. In this battle, Joffrey is the only one who backs out, and I don't just mean Tyrion, not many people mention it, but even cousin Lancel fights outside the wall with the hound and takes an arrow on the front line. It's a great episode because not only do we get the battle, but all the characters act consistently with their personalities and style. Good drama.
@AndyBestHP2 жыл бұрын
@@Laketwig yeah, that would be Joff's post but he left. What I'm getting at is that when rewatching this episode, I notice that it makes it very clear that literally everyone except Joff man's up. And that for me, it's as effective at making me hate the character as any of the other villain stuff he does (and let's be careful to only talk about what has been seen on the channel so far)
@AndyBestHP2 жыл бұрын
@@Laketwig an interesting parallel also is probably King Richard. The initial war between the Starks and Lannisters draws from the War of the Roses, and When Richard of York died in Bosworth Field, the last big battle of those wars, he was basically the last King to fight out in the field, or lead from the (almost) front. It mostly switched to 'commanding' after that, in the region.

There's a thing that happens during Blackwater which is the source of a much speculated theory in the ASOIAF verse. It's called "The Unkiss". This subplot is not in the show at all, so talking about it isn't a spoiler. What happens is that when Sansa looks back at the night of Blackwater, she fondly remembers how she'd shared a kiss with the Hound. Except for this, that night during her actual interaction with the Hound the kiss never happens! But later on, she keeps misremembering a kiss. This spun a ton of theories and deep dives. From simple things like it being a case of the "unreliable narrator" plot device, or the expression of a teenager's infatuation, to darker things like it being the repressed memory of a victim who's been repeatedly abused, maybe even by the Hound, etc etc. Anytime GRRM's been asked about The Unkiss he's downplayed it like he does with every theory, but also kinda egged it on by hinting that The Unkiss does have an important purpose. One thing's for sure, he's masterfully used a "Rashomon Effect" type plot device. On the surface this is such an inconsequential thing that if you squint you'd miss it, and yet it's too peculiar to be put in there for nothing. Truly a first-rate explorer of the complexities of human nature!

lmao, you put the best title for this episode. Stephane Dillane (Stannis) is 1 of my favorite actors Unfortunately this poor guy got the most jarring re-write of any character on the show. He's much beloved by book readers, and has a staunch fanbase of loyalists, but the show writers did him dirty. If he seems weirdly 1-dimensional and villainous in the show, it's because D&D purposely necked his character, turning him into a shadow of the real Stannis Baratheon.

After Renly's death they said all his men flipped to Stannis, all EXCEPT the Tyrells. You saw Margaery and Loras crying in front of his body and both Catelyn and Littlefinger separately saying they can't avenge Renly from the ground. Then next episode we see Littlefinger in Tywin's camp during that "did he notice Arya" scene. But that whole cat and mouse game with Arya and Tywin was a red herring. The real crux of that scene was Littlefinger proposing an alliance between House Lannister and House Tyrell, the Lords of the Reach. It was as subtle as it was well placed. "Margaery wants to be queen I take it" Tywin asks Littlefinger. None of this would've happened if Littlefinger didn't pick up on how ambitious Margaery was when he visited Renly's camp. "No, I want to be THE queen" she had said. All the chess pieces throughout the season, even the unassuming ones, build to Blackwater. The Lannisters now have their southern flank covered. With supplies and men coming in, the tide of the war has turned completely. But who will be the true power in the capital itself? Them or Tyrells?

On your comments about not knowing who to root for, that's actually the whole point of the story. There are good people and bad people on every side in this tale. And even the good people are sometimes compelled to do terrible things to other people given the extreme situations they are placed in. It is easy to sit back and put someone in a box and write 'goodie' or 'baddie' on it... and even to hope that really nasty things happen to the bad guys. But... one of the things this story teaches is that the bad things that happen are sometimes far far worse than we can imagine with implications that ripple through the story to the end. As the philosopher Arya Stark said "Anyone can be killed". Valar Morghulis.

I love this channel but I can’t believe you cut the whole Sansa/hound scene. I know with copyrighted and all you can’t have everything but don’t leave in whole scenes like that Tyrion/Varys one before the battle. You even took out one of the authors favourite show invented scenes between the hound and Bronn. If the reason you cut loads of those scenes was because you had no reaction I think you either need to watch episodes closer together or catch up on history and lore or something else. I promise you Tyrion isn’t the only important character in the show so pay attention to the smaller characters aswell

Legion of Decency yes you see it the whole time with new reactors. They just focus on the big action scenes when this show really isn’t about that. The show did do a disservice to the hounds character up to this point so I suppose reactors don’t really see much and then don’t care
