Bikes and Beards

We bought a rare 2000 Honda CBXX Blackbird from a auction we recently went to. Even though the Blackbird had only 1600 miles on it, it had some goofy issues. Sean went to work trying to figure out why this bike, with so little miles, would not run. After replacing the spark plugs, gas, and fuel pump Sean wondered if buying this bike was a mistake. We already had someone put a deposit on the bike so we had to fix it! Check out this episode of Bikes and Beards to see what the problem is with the rare Honda Blackbird!

Hey guys just wanted to leave an update on the blackbird! I'm now just a shy under 3,400 miles. I've been over the bike entirely now. 2 oil changes, completely flushed and pulled apart the cooling system, changed the clutch fluid, brakes fluid was replaced already. Checked the air filter( which they replaced and never told me :) ) this bike is as clean as can be. I'm beyond happy with it and it's not going anywhere. Getting a fresh set of Mich. Road 5's this week! Thanks SRK for the amazing deal!

So interesting. I left the motorcycle business in about 1985 after being a tech and service manager since starting out in 1962. I now see more relevance in some auto service videos to current motorcycle problems than in what servicing bikes was like before I got away from it. Carburetors on big bikes is history and no longer any inexpensive parts. Never thought I'd see the day when a good road bike tire price was in the $150 range.

I only replaced two oem components, the CCT cam chain tensioner and a FPR fuel pressure regulator that's it. I put some upgrades one the Blackbird with some goodies, dyno test showed 185bhp, my settings are: HyperPro street suspension kit + steering damper Brembo discs rotors + ceramic pads Dynojet Powercommander III K&N air and oil filters Akrapovic carbon slip-on cans Denso racing spark plugs GoodRidge steel brake lines

1st of all, I will say great choice for a low milage amazing Super Blackbird: I own a 2002 (Canadian) (FI) Black BB with 38,000 km's! They are amazing Bikes, Fast Engine is soooo smooth, great Sport-touring..a little heavy though if you are trying to use it as a "Canyon Carver"..lol!! But, before this Bike I owned a Brand new 2005 Suzuki GSXR1000R "Black with Yellow Trim", now that was a Wild Ride...NO BS; Traction Control, Anti-wheelie, Anti-crash...etc; just my Right-hand cranking the Throttle.."Can you say POWER-WHEELIES"!! Now, as far as your Re-Seller Bike Business; like other's have commented, it seems you either sould hire a mechanic or go back to school to study: Motorcycle Engine/Fabricating Repair Course!! Because if I were that Dude walking in to buy that BB and you had it all apart, not operating after you probably confirmed the Deal with him (Me); I would probably walk away...if it wasn't for the fact that you qouted him $3900.00 usd, when you should have been more around $6,000.00 usd!! That's the only reason (I) and probably he, stuck around and purchase the BB...;-)

The bird, a Super Blackbird, is revered in Japan as being fast. The only thing that could beat it was the mythical Hayabusa, which is why Suzuki called their bike this name, as it was marketed to be a Blackbird killer. The reference to the SR71 was an afterthought. Keep on keeping on man. 😎

Agreed. The modus operandi is to sell the bike first then check on its condition. First step is to hire a permanent mechanic on-site that will also travel to auctions. Second step is to get the mechanic to check everything before putting it up for sale. Third step is to base the price on the actual condition of the bike not on best market price.

I am very happy to see the success your having on the buying and selling of the bikes . One question is why dont you hire and motorcycle mechanic there in the shop to look the bikes over and see what they need if anything besides a good cleaning and oil changes and fresh gas and plugs .What your spending on sending the bikes out to be repaired could save you money with your own mechanic :) Take care and always god bless and always looking forward to your next video.

Yeah you would think he would hire a mechanic and have them prep a sold bike, and when slowly go through the bought bikes. Just seems like it would be less headache and he would know the customer is always getting a safe product. Heck if really slow the mechanic could do oil changes and tire changes (brought in off the bike). I always preferred that myself vs handing the dealer the keys to my nice motorcycle.

Gavin Humphryes - that’s a great point. Though I think their current business model is working out pretty well, by being careful to source good running bikes typically only needing basic minimal maintenance they can handle, allows them to keep overhead down & offer much better prices then other dealerships. That said, having a good certified motorcycle tech/ mechanic w/ tools on board can really be an asset & also offers up the ability to offer customers in-house repair/ maintenance services, which can provide an additional revenue stream for their business.

Theres a blackbird on display outside where you can drive up to it at the Air Force Armament Museum just north of Eglin AFB in the Florida panhandle. There's one parked outside at the Battleship Museum in Mobile, AL as well. You can head to the beach after checking them out. As a owner of a blackbird for over 21 years something seems suspicious about this bike. Plugs don’t match the miles on the odometer. Can I make a suggestion? Make sure the bike runs before putting it up for sale. If it doesn’t and it needs fixing, add the cost of the repair onto the sale price; then you won’t be out of pocket. Just a thought
@BikesandBeards
@BikesandBeards 4 жыл бұрын
Well the problem with that is you can’t price out a bike because of how much you have into it. You have to price out a bike for market value value. How much we have in the bike is irrelevant.
@leuvenlife
@leuvenlife 4 жыл бұрын
@@BikesandBeards I disagree with your logic as it is only half of it. You need to know what you will have to put into a bike when you buy it to evaluate whether or not it is a sensible purchase. If you have bought it cheap, but still have to invest in it, better to find out before you put it on the market. Some bikes are good for retail, some you move on to other dealers, but always know what you have in a bike. Market values are a guide. If you have something perfect 18 years after perfect became rare, you are in another market.

How is the amount of $ you have in it irrelevant? It is the number 1 factor. If you buy a bike for $2500 then put $500 in it and the market value is $3000 then how can your business survive without turning a profit.

I got my Blackbird a few years ago for $2,000. It was in rough condition, and I've put a lot of work into it, including replacing the subframe, entire charging system, and rebuilding part of the main wiring harness along with all the normal maintenance items (air filter, oil, chain and sprockets, forks rebuilt, etc.). I'm getting close to 70,000 miles on the clock, and this machine still pulls like a freight train! I hope that the work I've put into this fine machine will keep it going for many more tens of thousands of miles.

So one has to ask is he hoping to make it KZbin big with a million subs or be a motorcycle buyer and seller...what is he trying to be in life. Maybe both! But if buying and selling bikes make then money then the KZbinr thing is a hobby and should be second to everything else.

@@Meekerextreme I'd guess the youtube money as he already tried to get in on other well known channels such as Hoovies for the extra subs. Sure he's a nice guy, but no one likes to see someone 'playing' the part of a bike dealer. If he focuses on the shop, gets a good mechanic and starts thinking of quality over quantity he has a chance. Good advice does seem to bounce off of him though.

Not as rare as people make them out to be, most owners just hang onto them forever because they don't need much of any maintenance and will run 250,000+ miles easily. I personally know like 5 guys that have one in their garage in my relatively small town. Total sales in the US is like somewhere between 4000 and 6000.

Stopping buying old low mileage stuff that has sat and stopping buying utter shite would help as well. If they stick to buying used bikes dealers don't want on their shop floor they'd be fine but... They want to. Make money and are clueless about what they don't know. Pay a mechanic 50k a year salary and an ongoing training budget, yes it's under the average for a place paying flat rape but.... Guaranteed income is attractive. Do a percentage of hours sold to customers as a bonus and its all good and they will make serious money.

Pretty sure it's not everyday does he need a mechanic. He knows the basics well enough to figure out if a bike is worth being sold (safely). Hire someone like Joe for $$$ a month, or go to him once every few weeks for $? Or hire another mechanic of questionable skill for $$ a month? I'm pretty sure he'd get a mechanic fast if it meant going to Joe was losing him money buddy.
