My orchestra director told me that I would never be able to play the viola part of Passacaglia. It made me really determined because not only does she not really like violists in general (she is always putting us down) but what teacher just says that to someone who wants music to be their life. oh man did I prove her wrong.

I had a similar thing :( my mom was the one telling me I couldn't make it. And it was rather constant through the last half of junior year and all throughout senior year. But I worked my ass off to prove her wrong, and I'm studying at the Eastman School of Music now! I think it's important to always take what those nay-sayers are telling you and use it as a fire to do what they say you can't do

Holy shit that is horrific. I'm like crying just hearing about that. I'm sorry you had to deal with such a flawed person that you trusted. Your teacher knew their place and what kind of effect an email like that would have on not only your standing but also yourself as a person. Teachers are supposed to encourage and be positive not stomp down an 18 year old high schooler that's passionate about music. I'm happy that you coped with it positively and it lit a fire in you to push even harder. You're doing big things man and I'm excited to continue to watch such a viola inspiration!

This is very inspirational. One of my teachers told me that I was never going to make it no matter how hard a practice after a recital that didn't meet his standards. He said that there is nothing that I can do to get better and that I should change my major. That lit my fire. I got into a good graduate school program, made co principal in my graduate schools symphony orchestra, selected for the Alabama intercollegiate Honor Band and got 1st alternate in the national music festival. Never let anyone tell you that you can't succeed. Just prove them wrong. Thanks for your powerful video!

Wow! Something like this happened to be in high school with an English teacher. I had an A+ in her class, but she didn't 'see it' for me to amount to anything. She didn't recommend me for honors and AP classes, but I made it through because of my grades. I'm a chemist in a tough industry that's based on looks and heritage. Things like this happen all the time. I've gone through this cycle quite a few times. Sometimes it's personal and other times, that person is in the mood to be petty because they're having a bad day. This is a great video no matter what your profession is.

I had a teacher like that. I know how devastating it is :/ Now I tell myself the truth about it. He wasn't good enough of a teacher FOR ME. @kiaraeijo5 жыл бұрын
I’m sorry that you went through that☹️I have to be completely honest: Every musician has had a teacher like that. In my case, it wasn’t any of my flute teachers ( all three of them are amazing).. It was my college band director ( a famous trumpet who played with the Dallas Brass). For three years, he ran me down and made me feel like I was the worst musician ( he even tried to put me in pre-applied flute lessons and would put people higher than me because he liked them better). Even now, when I talk about him sometimes I get emotional because he broke me emotionally. I have also had a teacher ( my undergrad piano teacher) who was the complete opposite of my college band director. He was not someone who would give compliments all the time but if he saw that you worked hard, he would help you and with me, he wanted to help me with anything that he could ( he even was my main pianist for my senior recital). My piano teacher saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself and I can never thank him enough for everything that he did for me😊❤️🎼
@taurusmuse36995 жыл бұрын
@@kiaraeijo Sorry to hear about this trumpet guy. Some people are so full of themselves that they cannot be there for everyone, which is not ok if you wanna call yourself a leader or a teacher of some sort! Favourising is for big egoes. I am helping out a student privately because her teacher bitch about her not knowing rythms well enough, and he doesn't really give her tools to work through it. She has only been playing one year on violin and she is only 9 years old! I'd like to tell you a little of my story and I will try to make it short :P The three teachers I had(after decided to become a professional musician "rather late") and trusted, broke me bad(apart from one). I learned something useful with the first and I had a lot of respect for her, BUT she was verbally abusive. Had her for four years before entering academy and I had to leave her at my first years of academy for another teacher(a violin teacher that accepted to take me in, cause he wanted to help me out anyway he could.) The third and last one is not worth mentioning. He had a problem with me the day I stepped into the door. I hadn't developed enough selfconfidence on my instrument to get myself up and suck it up. My technique was a mess after shifting to the second teacher. After too much struggling with never being good enough and barely no real development on my instrument, I had to quite the academy after 4 years in the end, because of stress and being outburned, to find my strength again. Also the "love of my life" cheated on me after almost three years by inviting the younger girl into our bedroom, which I found out by finding black hair in my drawer when going back to get the last of my stuff when moving out. I wasn't moved out yet! And to make things worse he posted facebook pictures of her on his profil within a month and half after our beak up. I was beyond devastation. It stressed me out in ways I can't describe. He was a first class narcissist for sure. Cold as ice. Why did I stay so long in academy you wonder? I wanted to prove them wrong of course. I am Taurus, so I am stubborn and optimistic by heart :) ..too stubborn in this case. After that I had to go to several therapists, dealing with severe depression, extreme performance anxiety and other unpleasent things. Didn't eat properly for three years after that. On top of that I had health issues I wasn't aware of, which adds to the anxiety. Still in therapy to this day and I am much happier now :) It's been almost 5 years. Even though all that happened, I have decided not to quit music, cause I know that I am suppose to play music. What a long journey. I can proudly say that I still practice my viola and when I get my health even more back on track, I will find more likeminded people to play with, cause I know I am worthy. So far I am playing with a classical guitarist I've given small concert here and there with, to take the edges of performance anxiety, but we won't make a abroad tour before I am totally back on track which is nice :)

I feel like I've been in a horrible struggle for a year or so now. I'm a dancer and try my best as I might, I'm falling behind my age because I haven't been promoted. My teacher always reminds us that it's because there's still technique to be worked on but it's undeniably affecting my confidence, especially since I don't get as much exposure and opportunities as my classmates because it is impossible for me to attend full time. I appreciate your message and it really gave me motivation to keep pushing forward and working hard until I reach my goal! Thank you :)

That was actually regarding a language program because I was a foreign language major, but I do play the viola (and never the violin, haha!) so I love to watch your videos. Very inspirational :)

I had a similar thing said to me as well, but I was told this many days for an entire year. It wasn't a teacher but it was a co worker I worked with who was a tuba player as well. Those hurtful comments stung and put a whole in my heart but then I tried to see it in a positive manner and it gave me the motivation to prove him wrong and work my butt off. I saw it as a boost to push my self harder to be a better musician. The person who succeeds is the person that thinks they can and pushes towards that goal. It's all about perseverance and once you reach that goal set a new goal. Never stop growing and learning. I'm gonna introduce my self. My name is Angel Acosta I'm a tuba player and I play in the U.S. Marine Drum and Bugle Corps. I came to Lincoln center and did a joint concert with the New York Phil, I really enjoyed the experience so I started wondering how life at the Julliard school is, and I bumped into one of your videos, I enjoyed them, and started following your channel.

I started in 7th grade, and didn't take lessons until college. I've always sort of wanted to do music in school, and one particular summer, a Viola professor at a nameless university told me I would never be good enough, and that it just wouldn't be possible for me to ever be successful as a musician or a violist. This made me VERY angry (especially since it was during a quartet rehearsal that she was coaching during this music festival). I broke down, and couldn't handle not feeling like I would ever be good enough. Later on the next week (the week of performances) my friend talked to me about all of this, and it helped transition from hurt to hungry for music. After that point (I was going into my junior year in high school) I made higher chairs at all state, did a lot more research, asked for help, took a semester of lessons (couldn't afford more than that because of family medical issues shortly after) and really did discover that flame that was set to burn inside me.

hey thatviolakid I've been playing viola for almost 2 years and I'm going to high school next year and I feel very nervous... I feel like I'm not good enough. I know that I want to be a musician. I want your advice. Even after watching your video I'm still nervous. I have an awesome orchestra teacher I feel lime I'm gonna let down if don't adjust well to the new orchestra. Advice? How do I know I won't let her down? She's the person who saw me as a musician. How do I not feel pressured?

Don't take yourself so seriously. Your teacher will be proud no matter what! Just relax and do you absolute best!

can you do one of your videos for singers

I'm not really an expert on singers, so maybe I'll have to get one of my friends on here to help you guys out =)

Did you ever ask your ex-teacher why they did that to you? They must have known that was a vulnerable place for them to do that to you and would have a far greater chance of hurting more than helping you, because you're awesome you turned your lemons into lemonade but still that's a horrific thing for any teacher to do especially after they gave you a hiatus.

No. I closed that chapter in my life haha. Irrelevant =)

Sounds like your previous teacher had her own set of problems. Anyway, if you don't make it in music, you will be one heck of a motivational speaker for sure!

Jeremy Tarter I think he graduated high school in 2010 because he just finished his masters last year and finished his bachelor's three years ago.
