I'm a junior in high school and considering auditioning for Juilliard and will be auditioning for other conservatories. I don't come from a wealthy family, but I do attend a performing arts high school. My question is what can I do to increase my chance for scholarship at these big schools? Loved the vid btw.

Apply for many different scholarships and grants. There are merit and need-based scholarships! Also look for third-party scholarships to help you close the gap!

I'm thirteen and currently homeschooled, I did two musicals in public school prior to homeschooling. I primarily do theater, so singing and acting (I'm not much use at dancing). I am also a beginner pianist, but that's not my main focus. This school was suggested to me when I was eleven by my math teacher, and I've been working towards it since. I'm able to accept criticism, I learned to take that during a point in my drawing journey. I can also function in a competitive environment because I have had to literally audition against a close friend for the same role, and I've auditioned countless times for solos, character roles, that sort of thing. I know lots of music related terms (mainly in singing) and also in acting and even a bit of dance. I'm not exactly worried about my skill in my passions, it's me as a student in everything that isn't related to theater. I have always struggled heavily in math and I'm not that good at science. My literature, however, is a million times better and I've always exceeded my grade level in it. It's math that I'm basically incapable of, and I'm assuming you'd need SATS and/or ACTS. My other issue is me being homeschooled. There aren't any teachers who could recommend me, and I live in a really small town that has basically nothing to offer in terms of arts. All we have is a YMCA. You also need a distinct high level of pre-college training, a high GPA, and basically perfect test scores. I'm incredibly limited in my chances of this school even glancing at me, and it's kinda disheartening. I know there's always other schools, it's just that once you've got a goal, you don't wanna let go of it. You wanna do everything in your power to achieve it, especially if you're determined and ambitious (like me, usually). I know this is a four year old video, but I honestly don't know what I should do. Do I continue practicing and working towards it? Do I give up and look at something else? Do I give up entirely? I had a friend who said I need a backup or I should just forget it because of the low acceptance rate, but she's also the same person who wanted to go to Columbia University, which has practically the same standards. She hasn't given up on it, so why should I? Though, she's looking into science whereas I'm attempting musical theater, so I do suppose it's different. I honestly just don't know at this point.

Knowing that Juilliard is an Arts school, do they care about grades? GPA? Test scores? Or do they care only about what you can do as a musician/dancer/acting?
@austinhernandez2716
@austinhernandez2716 7 жыл бұрын
Frank Vidales No. Just have decent grades, especially in reading and writing though, because they do look at that a bit, although there are no specific grades or anything you have to have. But yes, they really only care about your performance.

I studied the bassoon for 4 years before I auditioned there. I thought I had an okay chance as I was first chair at all-state two years and had been taking lessons. However, I went to audition about 3 months ago and heard people playing music I can't even think of playing right now. I got rejected, but I was really only seeing how I would do. It was a fun time. I auditioned at several other schools as well and got accepted to half of them.

I think something that really helps me overcome audition anxiety is lulling yourself into such a high state of confidence that you think there's no way you won't make it in. To do this, I memorize the piece and just play it over and over again where I think, "There's no way my playing will get rejected", and I'm pretty sure psychologically, it makes you do better. This way you show your passionate ability while playing and you're not nervous prior to the audition. I felt like your answer was a little clichè hahah.
@ThatViolaKid
@ThatViolaKid 7 жыл бұрын
+Kliment Milanov I tried to keep that specific answer short--and I actually went really in-depth when I was taping it. I decided to cut that part out because the video would have been 4 minutes longer, and I already have a video up explaining it much better. Sorry that it came off a bit cliché and boring 😔

I'm only on 7th grade,I studied flute since 5th grade(I go to the highschool of art), and my teacher says the pieces I play are normally played ONLY in 10th grade, so I'm basically three years ahead.Sometimes, when my teacher is not around, he tells me to teach his other students and he calls me mrs teacher :)))) Every day I realize more and more that my goal is to go to a music academy, and my dream school is Juilliard.I study 2-3 hours a day, since there are a lot of technical difficulties in the pieces I play,and I study everyday.I am very determined to get there and I consider music to be my salvation through hard times (family problems).I live in Romania,therefore it would be quite hard to travel to America, let alone enter Juilliard!But I won't ever give up my dream. Sorry if my english sucks, I'm not a native english speaker.Hope you understand though :))

I'm a freshman at a small college getting my associates degree in fine arts(performance- instrumental) and want to transfer to Juilliard to finish and maybe study further, but in composition. I am very dedicated. I was doubting myself this first semester because I thought I wasn't good enough for Juilliard, but now I'm more confident and motivated than ever. My 6 week holiday break just started and as of today I'm going to start practicing and studying way more, at least 4 hours per day(compared to just 1 hour). And when I'm not practicing I'll be studying things like music theory. I want to get 2 degrees, one for performance and one for composition. I want to be like John Mackey, who got his master's degree in composition at Juilliard. He is my favorite composer.

Thanks. But there's def some music playing too. Some kind of rhythm. I thought I had another tab open with music playing last night while I was watching your video. But when I paused your video it would stop. Anyway, I've told my friend who is planning on applying to definitely watch this. He's a junior in high school but he visited Juilliard and sat in on a class.He said "When do I have time to watch videos?" because he practices for hours every evening in addition to doing homework. I love your videos, they've shown me that it is possible to actually be a violist in the world. I can actually allow myself to consider music as a major. Thanks. I do have a question though. How would you recommend training your ears to hear scales? My teacher wants me to learn my scales (and more importantly the space between notes), but I can't hear the note before I play it like she wants. I've tried several things, but if you have any suggestions please let me know.
@ThatViolaKid
@ThatViolaKid 7 жыл бұрын
+Lizzy Wagstaff Do you have a piano?? I would practice scales on the piano too! Ear training takes three things: time, careful listening, and patience! You just have to train yourself to hear the difference between a half step and a whole step! Once you've got that, it all becomes easier!

Hey TVK, i always find your videos inspirstional and helpful. I want to pursue going to a music school but that goal looks less realistic everyday. Im a late starter of piano and have made good progress in my music learning. However as its only my 4th year playing (and my final year of high school) I feel that I have not developed enough on my instrument to make me a competitive candidate by the next round of auditions. Every day of practice seems to put me further behind as I'm always falling short of the goals i set out to achieve causing me to lose modivation. What do you recommend i do to accelerate my learning and improve my chances at being accepted? -AG

TVK I LOVE YOU MORE EVERY VIDEO YOU CARE SO MUCH ABOUT PEOPLE AND YOU SEEM SO PASSIONATE ABOUT WHAT YOU SAY! YOU MAKE ME SO MOTIVATED AND I LOVE WATCHING YOU! Anyway, I have a question for you. :) Once you graduate from Juilliard, a top name school, there's a couple hundred (or something) students that graduate- how hard is it to land a career? When judges see that many of their possible musicians went to Juilliard, how can they pick one over the other? It sounds simple, like sound quality and everything like that, but is it really that easy? I know someone who is a doctor and went to Columbia- out of the many students who graduated, only a select few of them could actually get into medical school. The competition is so cutthroat, people are paying tons of money for undergrad, and then later they can't even get into a medical school. Thanks Drew! #AskTVK ~ThatChoirKid 😊

ThatViolaKid thank you so much for responding! I was wondering if you memorized all of your pieces? I want to memorize all of mine and I'm almost there except for the piece after 1945. Do people typically memorize that one as well?
@ThatViolaKid
@ThatViolaKid 4 жыл бұрын
@@undefinedd1147 I think I used music for the piece written after 1945. But you'll never regret memorizing music--it helps you concentrate more on the sound and what you're actually saying!

Do music schools like Juilliard look at everything music related you've ever done. Like if you've been in choir or music theory or All state? (if I'm auditioning on something like flute). Or do they not care so much?

Hey TVK, I got an #AskTVK : When choosing colleges, how should the location it's in affect your choice? I feel like the city of a school can provide a lot of out-of-school opportunities to perform, teach, network, learn new skills, meet new people, and in general, help build a foothold for having a successful career as a musician. Which cities could provide this, and how do you choose?

Is there an age limit for the Bachelors in Music (violin)? By the time I audition, I'll be 28 nearly 29. I'll have already completed a Bachelor of Music in piano, Masters of Music Therapy and a PhD in Music Therapy. Even with all that experience, is 28 too old to be considered?

Hi, so I'm a tenor sax player and I've been wondering what to do so at school there is not a jazz band and I want to play jazz. When I get out of middle and into high school I'm going to try to get into the jazz program at a music high school but to do that I need to learn all the main jazz scales. My school doesn't offer that kind of teaching. I have private lessons but do u think I'll be able to learn all the main jazz scales and lots about jazz and be able to play it in 2 years... Oh and I want to go to Juilliard when I grow up P.S. By the time I get to audition for Juilliard I would be playing flute: 7 years tenor sax: 8 years Alto sax: 10 years Do u think that's a good amount of time and also somewhere in that time period before I get to college I'm gonna learn clarinet because as a sax player I need to learn clarinet, well at least they want U to Please answer someone

Leilani Stannage bruh it was WACK. Ok, so I got passed the pre-screening and then I didn’t pass the live auditions cause I pretty much didn’t play the right make and model of my instrument and also had a previous teacher that didn’t do things *exactly* like the teacher there. I should also mention that I got into 5/7 (one of The two i didn’t being Julliard$ of the other conservatories I auditioned for, and got offered a full ride to two of them, so it was more of a political thing (and also the instrument thing). Honestly? I lowkey expected not to get in for a couple of reasons. One? I went to another pre-college program in the city, and they didn’t like that. But “iT ISSSS WHAT IT ISSS”, and we chillin’ at another conservatory in the fall (yes, they decided to let u choose to show up on campus or not cause of corona) lol 👀👀👌
