Biggest STRIPER in NC in Years!! Oxford Dam! + hybrid, spots (Fall)

*PLEASE SUBSCRIBE" So.. wait... on a crawfish ned rig???? I returned to Oxford Dam, North Carolina, targeting a PB blue cat. Ended up catching a North Carolina PB striped bass (striper), plus two spotted bass. Glad I left Lake Norman earlier after catching only one hybrid! Enjoy!

There's a fair amount of pressure at Oxford, especially for the spot right next to the heavy flow of water at the base of dam where I caught the striper, BUT I've caught fish there pretty consistently just using a night crawler whacky rigged, almost anywhere along the shore where it's deep enough for fish to be. Usually good for at least a spotted bass or two, not always huge. Very snaggy, bring extra hooks. I suggest straight mono or fluoro, no leader, you'll lose it. Plus, the other side can be fished. You can stand on that concrete block pictured in the thumb nail, far side, and with a simple hook, worm and bobber 3-4' up, you can catch fish (have to lift them 15'). Overall, I catch at least one fish 80% of the time, blanked once ever 4-5 trips. Or go for big cats: large hook baited with raw chicken soaked in anything with sugar, just let it sit out there and plan to hang out. The only real variable is the water flow, it can go from Niagara Falls to barley any flow, which can really slow the bite for all except cats. Thanks for watching!

Yes, it just depends when you go. You need some moving water near shore for the fish to be active, but the volume of water flow can fluctuate dramatically from hour to hour. It's hit or miss. Best in Spring or Fall. Thanks for watching!

That is so true. That's why I don't measure them, usually don't even take a weight, just put them right back in and see if they look healthy in the water, if so, release; if not, keep. thanks for watching!

Not sure, haven't been there in a few months, honestly, but Oxford rarely disappoints. The key thing is the water flow; more flow, more fish, but it's unpredictable and high flow can happen at any time, in seconds. thanks for watching!

Hey. That's the Catawba, at Oxford Dam, Lake Hickory is above. It has public access on both sides. It's on NC Highway 16 (can't miss it from the road), on the other side and just downstream is River Bend Park (tried there also, but it was shallower, was not as good shore-wise, for me). Interesting question. You mean, turbine wheels turned by a dam? Never fished near those, but there would be oxygen pushed through the water column, lots of opportunities for bait fish suspended or deep, with the bigger predators stacking in then nearby cross currents, to pick off weak bait fish. Great question!
