BIGGEST SWELL TO HIT HAWAII IN YEARS! (South Shore, Waikiki)

This is by far the biggest swell to hit south shore Oahu in my lifetime! We scored some of the best waves I have ever seen in Waikiki! It felt like we were on a surf trip somewhere in Indonesia. Me Nathan and Ivan Florence must have surfed a total of 7 hours this day! I wish it was always like this haha.

Awesome session Koa. You look stoked. I also used to get rashed sometimes wearing a rash guard. Try this stuff called Body Glide. (blue container, looks like white deodorant). Put a little on before your session wherever you normally get rashed and it will prevent it. Super effective.

The last time I surfed that wave was in like summer 2015 pumping big south and Carrisa and her Dad were out and she’s going straight to the top and hacking it in the pocket, I just remember thinking ok there’s a girl out here ripping i’ll be fine lol, never forget that session ! I was lucky enough to be on the South Shore in June 1974. From what I can tell it was the biggest swell to hit the South Shore. Are there any viewers who are old enough to remember that swell?

No, but I lived in Waikiki from 62 to 72. You could always tell when a big swell was coming because the sets started to get really regular…plenty of waves in each set, and long lulls between…even if it was two feet, you knew it would be eight to ten feet in three days. Those swells always lasted about five days, with the biggest day being the third, because they came all the way from New Zealand, or even south of it. The 60s had plenty of swells like that…almost every summer. Remember, Castles doesn’t work well until its 15 ft. Remeber Dukes ride. This post is awesome…great surfing, great waves!

@@Bonnieham Biggest rideable swell I remember since August 1970 came through on March 3, 1980. The other swell some 7-10 years ago was epic but not quite as clean. BTW, Castle's is very fickle and sometimes doesn't even show when other breaks (Ricebowl for example) are going off. Depending on swell direction, tide and current, though, it can get going when only head-high. I've surfed overhead Castle's by myself on a gentle west-wind afternoon, overhead, wave after wave and wondering where everyone else had gone to. Side note: went to high school with Chris Castle, grandson of Harold Castle, owner of Kaneohe Ranch.

@@charlesschuster7963 Thanks for all that info…I never surfed castles…watched it once from the top of Diamond Head, but don’t know what year. My favourite break was Threes…used to see Paul Strauch, George Downing, and Joey Cabell out there on most big swells? surfed Rice bowls a few times when big…locals had the right sewn up, so I went left…had some of my longest left barrels there on an old Velsey pig that a mate had found under his Grandma’s house in Kaimuki. I was the only one going left. Another South Shore left I liked was Big Left that broke towards Courts when it was 8+…hardly anyone riding it. The best time I had at Wailupe was when Sandy’s was 15 to 18’ out the back. Ricky Grigg was first one out the day before, which was way better, but on the second day the right was closed out and we rode the left which was fat and broke into deep water…it got me used to waves that size. Oh, and amazingly, the wind was North for both days, so sraight offshore to coincide with the unusual swell direction. Wailupe lefts was easy 8’ and the best swell angle I’ve ever surfed it…sometimes things all align:-)

August 17th on a Tuesday it got way bigger on the South shore peaked around 12:00 but they did not mention it on any surf report some spots were seen 15 ft faces
