Kirsty Partridge Art I'm not huge on drawing, but when I do it's realism. I believe the most important thing is getting the shapes accurate, this takes a lot of practice but to make whatever you make look real, shape is incredibly important and makes the whole buildup, you cannot really outshade a bad form.

When I was in primary school I was already drawing and I remember I was drawing in maths class and my teacher approched me and told me she was an art teacher before and that she advised me to contrast my drawings. I did and it was amazingly better. Now, I always use too much contrast in my drawings and ruin them all.

I have a few more tips that might seem insignificant. 1: Stay hydrated. Have a glass of water or a cup of calming tea while you do some art projects. 2: Don't try to be perfect or try to copy the reference. Be yourself while you create the realistic art. Personal realistic art is better than a copied work.

True, but when someone doesn't know how to properly draw something without copying a reference they can mess up easily, making it look not realistic. Ive always been told draw what you see, not what you think you see( with realism)

100% agree with the stuff you say about contrast. My drawings improved SO much once I was able to let go of the fear of going "too dark". I always found that I held back with my shading and layering, and it almost resulted in a washed out appearance. Contrast is so important!

I think taking your time is very important in realism especially when your first starting. I see so many people rush especially when they get close to the end of the piece. I can almost always tell the areas the artist takes their time vs rush through. Most of the time if the artist just slows down then they will achieve a higher realistic drawing.
@faithetheredge1066

I think another key element to realism is to not put dark outlines around everything. Don't outline a normal face with a black prismacolor 😂 you can separate the face from the neck by building the shadows under the chin.

You're so right, this is a huge step from drawing with contour only, as we learn as kids, to producing what I call "painterly" work, where we are looking at contrast rather than line. One thing that I am learning now is to really see the sketch as a let of limits, but not a part of the final image. I'm learning to sketch lightly, and apply color up to and including the contour line. It is a bit scary, essentially erasing the sketch you worked so hard on, but it's the way to progress towards a realistic style.

I've got good technique, and I can handle many different medium(s?) but I haven't discovered my own style. Also, I'm lacking in creativity, i.e., coming up with my own ideas, rather than copying what someone else has already done. Can you please give us hints and tips on those two things: 1) Finding and developing one's own style, and 2) Ideas for being creative. Thanks!
@ghazalgorji2598

T Gilbert I know this question isn't meant for me but a good starting point for creative drawing is to base your drawings on already existing descriptions. For example take a scene from a book or a fairy tale and imagine what it describes and draw the characters or the setting based on it. It helps train your mind to clearly imagine things. And as for your other question, style is all about simplicity/exaggeration and how it's applied. A good exercise is to draw something a bunch of times, first realistically then simplify/exaggerate the features as you draw it again and again. I hope you find this useful. 😊

I would suggest just going for it and just draw something random! Idk what you usually draw or like to draw, but for example if you like to draw humans just draw random humans that don't exist! Also would suggest making characters(like from books and movies) so then u can come up poses and scenes for them! Not sure abt the developing ur own style, I think if u continue drawing things u come up with, u'll develop ur style!

Please help..skin colour is my worst amongst others...what top 5 or 3 colours do you use to get that realistic look on skin?
@isabellabihy8631
@isabellabihy8631 6 жыл бұрын
Denise F Oops, that's exactly what Kirsty is saying, look at your reference photo. Skin has loads of colors and values. I've made the error myself, mixing up value with color. Ok, there are some basic skin tone colors (check out "Lachri Fine Art" or "Artalacarte" here on KZbin. There are much more, though.). You could also observe Kirsty in this video. Towards the end Kirsty has red tones in the skin, which may be due to the red top she is wearing. With these recommended skin colors, go in layers, and be patient. Example: Assume you're creating a portrait of a pale-skinned person wearing a royal-blue blouse. In the shadowed areas you'd need to add a layer of pale blue, or if it were a pine-green pullover, hint some light cool green in the face. Layers, layers, ... Ah, not to forget... layers. That's colored pencil. In watercolors, mix in a tiny drop of the reflected color and ... layer. I keep repeating. Or glaze with the reflected color, which I think is easier to achieve and prevents "mud mixing". Glazing is also done in acrylics or oils. Again, layers. In watercolors, you can mix up some good basic skin tone with yellow ochre, burnt Siena, Indian yellow, red. That's a mid-tone skin. Experiment with the proportions of color and water. Darken the color with umber or Van-Dyke brown. The big favor to do for yourself here is: Throw away the pan with black. Black is to be mixed up from umber or Van-Dyke brown with Prussian blue. If that should feel too cold, add some burnt Siena. With colored pencil, it's good to have a black pencil. Why? Have look at Mark Crilley's videos. Kirsty, I mean no offense to you. But your skin color serves as an example here. BTW, you are doing great videos. I'm subbed.

All the cell phones with cameras have a contrast setting so why not use your reference with a lighten contrast to get a good base shape and then gradually work your way up as your darken your contrast?! Just a thought!? I think this would be helpful for beginners like myself. Eventually, everything will fall into place naturally you can't get better at something if you don't put any effort in to it!

I started drawing my first realistic picture iv done in many years just two days ago (after binging on your other videos 😁) and it's the same image of Emma Watson you chose! What an incredulous moment that was for me. Hahaha. Thanks for the video 😊
